Kohut 2 The Darkness of Man: A Study of Light and Dark Imagery in Seneca’s Thyestes and Agamemnon Seneca’s Thyestes and Agamemnon are texts in which light rarely presents itself, instead it is dark that is present from start to finish. Throughout the course of these texts, I take note of the use and presence, or lack, of light. There appear to be two specific uses of light that serve specific purposes in Thyestes and Agamemnon: natural light (generally indicated with primarily die- or luc-1 based words), and artificial light (referenced by words related to/derived from flamma or ardeo2). Natural light is prominently used only when discussing its being consumed by darkness, while artificial light appears in passages saturated with destruction and chaos. -

Getting acquainted with the myths What "getting acquainted" may mean We'll first try to clarify the meaning that the expression "getting acquainted" may have in this context: In a practical sense, I mean by "acquaintance" a general knowledge of the tales of mythology, including how they relate to each other. This concept includes neither analysis nor interpretation of the myths nor plunging too deep into one tale or another. In another sense, the expression "getting acquainted" has further implications that deserve elucidation: First of all, let us remember that we naturally investigate what we ignore, and not what we already know; accordingly, we set out to study the myths not because we feel we know them but because we feel we know nothing or very little about them. I mention this obvious circumstance because I believe that we should bear in mind that, in this respect, we are not in the same position as our remote ancestors, who may be assumed to have made their acquaintance with the myths more or less in the same way one learns one's mother tongue, and consequently did not have to study them in any way. -

The winds have died because Agamemnon is being punished by the goddess Artemis, whom he offended. The only way to remedy this situation is for Agamemnon to sacrifice his daughter, Iphigenia, to the goddess Artemis. Agamemnon then admits that he has sent for Iphigenia to be brought to Aulis but he has changed his mind. -

Generations of heroes The Argonautica of Apollonius Rhodius brings emphatically to the attention of its readers the distinction between the generation of the Argonauts and the heroes of the Trojan War in the next genera- tion. Apollonius initially highlights this emphasis in the episode of the Argonauts’ departure, when the baby Achilles is watching them, at AR 1.557-5581 σὺν καί οἱ (sc. Chiron) παράκοιτις ἐπωλένιον φορέουσα | Πηλείδην Ἀχιλῆα, φίλωι δειδίσκετο πατρί (“and with him his wife, hold- ing Peleus’ son Achilles in her arms, showed him to his dear father”)2; he does so again in 4.866-879, which describes Thetis and Achilles as a baby. More specifically Jacqueline Klooster (2014, 521-530), in discussing the treatment of time in the Argonautica, distinguishes four periods of time to which Apollonius refers: first, the time before the Argo sailed, from the beginning of the cosmos (featured in the song of Orpheus in AR 1.496-511); second, the time of its sailing (i.e. the time of the epic’s setting); third, the past after the Argo sailed and fourth the present inhab- ited by the narrator (both hinted at by numerous allusions and aitia). -

The Life of the Author in the Letters of “Euripides” Johanna Hanink N 1694, Joshua Barnes, the eccentric British scholar (and poet) of Greek who the next year would become Regius Professor at the University of Cambridge, published his I 1 long-awaited Euripidis quae extant omnia. This was an enormous edition of Euripides’ works which contained every scrap of Euripidean material—dramatic, fragmentary, and biographical —that Barnes had managed to unearth.2 In the course of pre- paring the volume, Barnes had got wind that Richard Bentley believed that the epistles attributed by many ancient manu- scripts to Euripides were spurious; he therefore wrote to Bentley asking him to elucidate the grounds of his doubt. On 22 February 1693, Bentley returned a letter to Barnes in which he firmly declared that, with regard to the ancient epistles, “tis not Euripides himself that here discourseth, but a puny sophist that acts him.” Bentley did, however, recognize that convincing others of this would be a difficult task: “as for arguments to prove [the letters] spurious, perhaps there are none that will convince any person that doth not discover it by himself.”3 1 On the printing of the book and its early distribution see D. This page intentionally left blank MONEY AND THE EARLY GREEK MIND How were the Greeks of the sixth century bc able to invent philosophy and tragedy? In this book Richard Seaford argues that a large part of the answer can be found in another momentous development, the invention and rapid spread of coinage, which produced the first ever thoroughly monetised society. By transforming social relations, monetisation contributed to the ideas of the universe as an impersonal system (presocratic philosophy) and of the individual alienated from his own kin and from the gods (in tragedy). Seaford argues that an important precondition for this monetisation was the Greek practice of animal sacrifice, as represented in Homeric epic, which describes a premonetary world on the point of producing money. This book combines social history, economic anthropology, numismatics and the close reading of literary, inscriptional, and philosophical texts. Questioning the origins and shaping force of Greek philosophy, this is a major book with wide appeal. richard seaford is Professor of Greek Literature at the University of Exeter. He is the author of commentaries on Euripides’ Cyclops (1984) and Bacchae (1996) and of Reciprocity and Ritual: Homer and Tragedy in the Developing City-State (1994). PIERO MIOLI L'OPERA ITALIANA DEL NOVECENTO MANZONI MILANO, 2018 PREMESSA Cento anni: così Giuseppe Rovani volle intitolare il suo grande romanzo storico-ciclico, narrando vicende comprese fra il 1750 e il 1849 e fra l’altro largheggiando di curiose situazioni e riflessioni musicali (l’edizione definitiva del libro è del 1868-69); e così dovrebbe pur chiamarsi questo sommario panorama del '900 teatro-musicale italiano, nonostante tutti gli imbarazzi che presiedono a tali quadrature cronologiche e tutti i rischi che esso corre fornendo forse più dati che idee. Cent’anni, un secolo, un lungo segmento temporale tutto sommato finito da poco: ma se la fine di questo fatidico '900 si trova a sfumare nell’inizio del secolo seguente, il '100 del Duemila che è in corso, altrettanto si deve riconoscere oggi e si sarà asserito allora del suo inizio sfumato dalla fine del secolo precedente. Nell’impossibilità, dunque, di fissare un avvio riferibile a un preciso fattore di carattere sociale, civile, culturale, per non dire artistico e musicale, sarà provvedimento modesto e rassegnato ma almeno utile e chiaro quello che accetta di dare l'inizio al semplicissimo 1901 e la fine all'altrettanto schietto 2000, permettendosi il credibile lusso di procedere qualche anno ancora. L’imbarazzo non viene a mancare, s’intende, né s’abbassa il rischio, ma da parte sua, almeno, la matematica non ammette né repliche né sfumature. Prima di pervenire al corpo del discorso diacronico, descrittivo, impostato insomma come una giusta suddivisione in periodi, è però sembrato bene fornire degli schizzi storico-culturali che sappiano inquadrare degnamente, si spera, le fasi storiche del genere, un genere significativo ma assai esigente come il teatro d’opera italiano: dunque il diverso “panorama” sincronico promesso dall’indice comprende gli elementi generali, alcuni fenomeni particolari, i luoghi teatrali nel loro complesso e qualche teatro in vista più di altri, ovviamente e principalmente le prime culle della nuova produzione operistica. -

Leonid Zhmud Heraclitus on Pythagoras By the time of Heraclitus, criticism of one’s predecessors and contemporaries had long been an established literary tradition. It had been successfully prac ticed since Hesiod by many poets and prose writers.1 No one, however, practiced criticism in the form of persistent and methodical attacks on both previous and current intellectual traditions as effectively as Heraclitus. Indeed, his biting criti cism was a part of his philosophical method and, on an even deeper level, of his selfappraisal and selfunderstanding, since he alone pretended to know the correct way to understand the underlying reality, unattainable even for the wisest men of Greece. Of all the celebrities figuring in Heraclitus’ fragments only Bias, one of the Seven Sages, is mentioned approvingly (DK 22 B 39), while another Sage, Thales, is the only one mentioned neutrally, as an astronomer (DK 22 B 38). All the others named by Heraclitus, which is to say the three most famous poets, Homer, Hesiod and Archilochus, the philosophical poet Xenophanes, Pythago ras, widely known for his manifold wisdom, and finally, the historian and geog rapher Hecataeus – are given their share of opprobrium.2 Despite all the intensity of Heraclitus’ attacks on these famous individuals, one cannot say that there was much personal in them. He was not engaged in ordi nary polemics with his contemporaries, as for example Xenophanes, Simonides or Pindar were.3 Xenophanes and Hecataeus, who were alive when his book was written, appear only once in his fragments, and even then only in the company of two more famous people, Hesiod and Pythagoras (DK 22 B 40). -

Mediterranean Journal of Clinical Psychology ISSN 2282-1619 Vol 7, n 1, 2019-Supplementum Psychology and Psychopathology of the Mask Clytemnestra both victim and executioner Marinella Calabrese 1 Abstract The present article deals with the relation between the concept of mask and some dynamics of fiction and revelation related to it. Each person, in the sense of individual, wears more masks, according to the roles and contexts of the society in which they live. The mask hides and, at the same time, reveals parts of the subject's personality. Even in the dynamic "victim-executioner" the roles, although apparently opposed, can sometimes be confused and overturned, and the masks can be exchanged. Among the figures of Greek mythology, Clytemnestra, the uxoricide who witnessed the murder of her first husband and newborn son, who saw the beloved daughter Iphigenia sacrificed for her husband Agamemnon's cravings for power, embodies the double role of victim and executioner.
