Hanuman Grieves for Sita “Om Sri Lakshmi Narashimhan Nahama” Valmiki Ramayana – Sundara Kanda – Chapter 16 Hanuman Grieves for Sita Summary Hanuma is grief stricken seeing the plight of Seetha, in that garden being surrounded by ogresses (a female giant that feeds on human beings). He becomes firm in mind that she is indeed Seetha, based on her auspicious bodily marks. Chapter [Sarga] 16 in Detail prashasya tu prashastavyaam siitaam taam hari pumgavah | guna abhiraamam raamam ca punah cintaa paro abhavat || 5-16-1 The best among Vanaras praising that Seetha who is fit to be praised, and also praising Sri Rama pleasing with His virtues, became immersed in thought again. sa muhuurtam iva dhyaatvaa baaspa paryaakuleksanah | siitaam aashritya tejasvii hanumaan vilalaapa ha || 5-16-2 That Hanuma the radiant one thinking for a moment, cried about Seetha and became with eyes tormented with tears. maanyaa guru viniitasya laksmanasya guru priyaa | yadi siitaa api duhkha aartaa kaalo hi duratikramah || 5-16-3 “Respectable to Lakshmana, instructed by teachers, Seetha is also dear to teachers;     “Om Sri Lakshmi Narashimhan Nahama” Valmiki Ramayana – Yuddha Kanda – Chapter 73 CHAPTER 73 Indrajit Shoots a Brahmastra at Rama and Lakshmana Those rakshasas who survived hastily reported to Ravana that Devantaka, Trishira, Atikaya and others had been killed. Hearing this sudden message of death, the king’s eyes filled with tears. Thinking about the death of his sons and the horrible slaughter of his brothers, the king became very contemplative. When Indrajit saw how his father was miserable and drowning in an ocean of grief, he spoke the following words: “O lord of the rakshasas, you should not despair while Indrajit is alive! Indeed, no one is able to survive when struck by my arrows in combat. Today see Rama and Lakshmana lying dead on the ground, Their bodies pierced, scattered and completely covered by my arrows! Hear my vow strengthened by great determination, manliness and destiny: I shall this very day overcome Rama and Lakshmana with my arrows which are always effective! Today Indra, Yamaraja, Vishnu, Rudra, the saadhyas, Agni, Chandra and Surya will witness my immeasurable prowess as they did the formidable prowess of Vishnu in the sacrificial arena of Maharaja Bali!” After saying this and taking leave of Ravana, the enemy of Indra, Indrajit mounted the chariot which was as swift as the wind, drawn by asses and equipped with weapons. Sitting down in the chariot, the glorious Indrajit, the crusher of enemies, suddenly departed for the battlefield. Extremely excited, many powerful rakshasas carrying excellent bows followed the great prince. Some rakshasas rode on elephants, some on fine steeds, tigers, scorpions, cats, asses, camels, snakes, boars, lions, jackals as big as hills, crows, swans and peacocks.

(5) In the fifth scene is Lankini, the gate -keeper of Lanka City. She also tries to gobble up Sri Hanumanji while He was entering into Lanka, assuming a tiny form.

    “Om Sri Lakshmi Narashimhan Nahama” Valmiki Ramayana – Yuddha Kanda – Chapter 70 Chapter [Sarga] 70 Devantaka, Trishira, Mahodara and Mahaparshva Killed Devantaka, Trishira and Mahodara cried when they saw that Narantaka had been killed. Mounted on a huge elephant, Mahodara rushed toward the valiant Angada. Grabbing a formidable club tipped with iron spikes, Devantaka, who was pained by his brother’s death, dashed toward Angada. Riding a chariot as brilliant as the sun and drawn by fine steeds, Trishira also charged at Angada. Being rushed by the three Rakshasa leaders who were capable of crushing the pride of the gods, Angada pulled up a tree with big branches. Angada suddenly hurled that big tree at Devantaka, as Indra would his blazing thunderbolt. Trishira shattered the tree with his arrows that resembled venomous snakes. Seeing the tree shattered, Angada jumped up. That foremost of monkeys then showered trees and boulders. Enraged, Trishira shattered them with his sharpened arrows. Mahodara also shattered those trees with his club, while Trishira rushed upon Angada while shooting arrows. Pursuing Angada on an elephant, Mahodara angrily struck him in the chest with his club, which was like a thunderbolt. The agile Devantaka approached Angada, struck him with his club and retreated. Although assailed by all three outstanding rakshasas at the same time, Angada did not feel distressed. Exhibiting tremendous impetuosity, the invincible Angada darted toward Mahodara’s elephant and smacked it with his palm. Due to the impact of Angada’s hand, the elephant’s eyes felled out and it died. Pulling out one of the elephant’s tusks, Angada charged toward Devantaka and stuck him in combat.
