We are not asking for a hand out, rather a hand up,” Mayor Britton said.

THANK YOU Boulia Shire Council would like to thank Boulia State School, Rick and Ann Britton and the Goodwood crew and also the many local and regional residents who welcomed the Prime Minster to Boulia. Without your help and sup- port, the auspicious occasion would not have been possible.

SCHOOL LEADERS MEET WITH COUNCIL LEADERS In an impressive imitative, Boulia State School students meet with Boulia Shire Councillors at last months council meeting. Students put forward their long term visions for both school and the town they call home. Some of their ideas included an overhaul of the school oval, new murals, painted hand ball courts and additional play equipment. Their vision for the shire comprised of more sports clubs, introduction of holiday camps, town beautification and recycling. CHANNEL COUNTRY CHATTER June 2018

NEW TYPE OF ZEBRA What started as a quick glance on Facebook by Boulia Shire Mayor Rick Britton has ended in a project that can claim to be the first of it‟s kind in Australia. The 3D Zebra Crossing has worked success- fully in countries including India, the United Sates, Malaysia and Ice land. The crossing is designed to gives drivers the optical illu- sion of a raised surface, therefore they slow down. Boulia Shire Council Works and Operations Manager Harin Karra said council had initially trialled the 3D crossing on the existing cross- ing bordering the school and health clinic. A second crossing was transformed at the front of the school and a third crossing is currently in the pipeline. “We are gathering statistics as to the amount of traffic and speed motorists are travelling before we undertake the third crossing pro- ject,” Mr Karra said. A $480,000 make-over and a lot of TLC has brought the 60year-old Boulia Shire Hall back to it‟s former glory. Thanks to a grant from the Drought Communities Programme along with an allocation from the Boulia Shire Council, the hall was officially re-opened by Mayor Rock Britton and Councillors Beck Britton and Sam Beauchamp. The 2018 Dia- monds and Dust Ball provide the perfect op- portunity for the whole township of Boulia to be part of the ceremony. IDENTITY DISCOVERED

Following recent publicity seeking help to find the deceased person in an isolated grave on Herbert Downs, we are happy to report his identity has been revealed. He was 14-year- old John George Trewenack/Rundle born in South Australia in 1884. He is believed to have passed away in 1898. Marion Downs Manager Rob Jansen plans to put his new found information to good use by erecting a plaque dedicated to John. This will be mounted onto the steel fence Rob will in- stall around the grave to preserve the struc- ture. Rob has also said after telling his staff about the young lad, they have all chosen to chip in to purchase the plaque. CHANNEL COUNTRY CHATTER June 2018 BELLES & BEAuTIES More than 80 people donned their ball gowns and suits for the annual Diamonds and Dust Ball in Boulia. Ancestors of past owners and occupiers of the home were on hand to cut the birthday cake and celebrate with a morning tea thanks to Boulia Heritage Complex staff. Event organisers said the celebration was a great success and were extremely happy with the number of residents who attended. “We like to encourage our local residents to be part of our extensive town history and the Boulia Heritage Complex is a great place to discover the early history of the shire.” CHANNEL COUNTRY CHATTER June 2018
