Galatasaray AŞ will look to build on their strong finish to the UEFA Champions League group stage when they host FC Schalke 04 in the first leg of their round of 16 tie in Istanbul. • After losing their first two Group H fixtures, Fatih Terim's men finished with three straight wins to snatch second place in the section and will now bid to make it four in a row in their first ever meeting with Schalke. • This tie marks a UEFA Champions League debut for Jens Keller, the man brought in by Schalke to replace Huub Stevens as coach in December. Keller, who has played and coached in the UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League, has never faced Turkish opposition before. • Schalke have lost just one of their last nine European away fixtures, including victories at Olympiacos FC and Arsenal FC en route to topping Group B before Christmas. Match background • Galatasaray are hoping to reach the European Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2001 – and the fifth time overall – but will have to improve on their recent efforts against German visitors. • This is Galatasaray's 12th home meeting with Bundesliga opposition and they are seeking just their third victory having won none of their last five games against German sides in Istanbul. Their overall home record against teams from Germany is W2 D7 L2. • On the last occasion Galatasaray hosted a Bundesliga outfit they surrendered a two-goal lead to succumb 3-2 to Hamburger SV in the second leg of their 2008/09 UEFA Cup round of 16 tie – a result that left them eliminated 4-3 on aggregate. Their last home win was a 1-0 success against Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup second round. Their last away victory came at a Hertha BSC Berlin side including Schalke's Raffael in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage, Milan Baroš scoring the only goal from the penalty spot. • Galatasaray overcame 1. FC Magdeburg, the first German side they ever faced, on the toss of a coin after three 1-1 draws in the preliminary round of the 1964/65 European Cup Winners' Cup. • Hamit Altıntop, who is facing his old club, was in the Schalke side that first met Turkish opposition in the UEFA Champions League, drawing 3-3 at Fenerbahçe SK, then winning 2-0 at home in the 2005/06 group stage. • Schalke's only other trip to Turkey brought another 3-3 draw at Trabzonspor AŞ in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup second round, a result that secured a 4-3 aggregate success for a side who went on to lift the trophy. • Schalke have reached the quarter-finals twice in recent campaigns – in 2010/11, when they were semi-finalists, and in 2007/08. Their only other run to the last eight was back in 1958/59. Team ties • As a Turkish international, Terim appeared in five matches against Germany, losing four of them beginning with a 5-0 home friendly defeat in 1975. The only exception was a 0-0 home draw in April 1979 in UEFA European Championship qualifying. He also appeared against East Germany in 1978 FIFA World Cup qualifying, Turkey posting a home defeat and an away draw. • In his first spell as Galatasaray coach Terim lost home and away to Borussia Dortmund in the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League group stage. However, his team fared better against Bundesliga opponents in 1999/2000. In that season's UEFA Champions League they drew 2-2 at home to Hertha BSC Berlin and then beat them 4-1 away to secure third place in their group and entry into the UEFA Cup, where they defeated Dortmund in the fourth round – winning 2-0 away for an identical aggregate success – en route to lifting the trophy. • As Turkey coach Terim lost out to Christoph Metzelder's Germany in the UEFA EURO 2008 semi-finals. Hamit Altıntop, Hakan Balta, Sabri Sarıoğlu and Gökhan Zan all featured as Turkey went down 3-2 in Basel. • Hamit Altıntop was born in Gelsenkirchen and played for Schalke between 2003 and 2007, making 113 league appearances and scoring eight goals before moving on to FC Bayern München. • Hakan Balta, Engin Baytar, Ceyhun Gülselam and Furkan Özçal were also born in Germany. Hakan Balta started his professional career in Hertha's reserve team and Engin Baytar did likewise at DSC Arminia Bielefeld while Ceyhun came through the youth ranks at SpVgg Unterhaching, spending two seasons in their first team between 2006 and 2008. • Didier Drogba scored Chelsea FC's equalising goal and then converted the winning penalty when they overcame FC Bayern München in last May's UEFA Champions League final – his last appearance in the competition. Drogba

Galatasaray AŞ: Fatih Terim Date of birth: 4 September 1953 Nationality: Turkish Playing career: Adana Demirspor, Galatasaray AŞ Coaching career: MKE Ankaragücü, Göztepe AŞ, Turkey Under-21, Turkey (twice), Galatasaray AŞ (three times), ACF Fiorentina, AC Milan • A central defender, Terim played for Galatasaray for over a decade and represented Turkey 51 times, 31 of them as captain. He started his coaching career with MKE Ankaragücü and then Göztepe, before he was named assistant to national team boss Sepp Piontek and put in charge of the Under-21s in 1991. • Appointed Turkey coach in 1993 and led them to EURO '96. They lost all of their games in England, but just getting to the final tournament, Turkey's first since the 1954 FIFA World Cup, was a major landmark. • After EURO '96 he returned to Galatasaray, winning four league titles and the 2000 UEFA Cup. Serie A came calling and Terim took charge of Fiorentina and Milan before returning to Galatasaray, but problems behind the scenes brought about a temporary retirement in 2004. • Reappointed by Turkey in 2005 following a break from management, Terim – known as 'Imparator' (The Emperor) for his leadership skills – could not guide the team through a 2006 FIFA World Cup play-off against Switzerland. Success followed at UEFA EURO 2008, however, with Terim leading Ay Yıldızlılar (The Crescent-Stars) to the semi-finals, but he resigned following his side's unsuccessful bid to reach the 2010 FIFA World Cup. • Returned for a third spell in charge of Galatasaray in May 2011 and in his first season back steered Cimbom to their first Süper Lig crown in four years.

FC Schalke 04: Jens Keller Date of birth: 29 November 1970 Nationality: German Playing career: VfL Wangen, VfB Stuttgart (twice), TSV 1860 München, VfL Wolfsburg, 1. FC Köln, Eintracht Frankfurt Coaching career: VfB Stuttgart (youth), VfB Stuttgart, FC Schalke 04 (youth), FC Schalke 04 • Having risen through Stuttgart's youth department, Keller made his first and only Bundesliga appearance in 1990 before leaving for third-tier 1860 München, where he helped the club to win promotion to the second and then first divisions. • A fringe player in the Bundesliga, he moved to second division Wolfsburg and again won promotion, subsequently becoming a top-flight regular and earning a return to Stuttgart, where he played in the 1998/99 UEFA Cup. • Joined Köln in 2000 but relegated two years later, prompting a switch to Eintracht, whom he helped into the Bundesliga only to miss most of the season with cartilage damage; relegation and further injury problems led to retirement in 2005. • Took over Stuttgart's Under-19 side in 2008/09 and became Christian Gross's assistant with the first team in December 2009; the following October, replaced Gross as head coach but lasted only two months before making way for Bruno Labbadia, although Keller continued to work for the club as a scout. • Appointed Schalke's U17 coach in summer 2012, on 16 December that year he stepped up to the senior side following Huub Stevens' departure.

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know? • Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 28 occasions, including SL Benfica, APOEL FC, FC Bayern München and Chelsea FC in 2011/12. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. • The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home. • Twenty-one ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg. • In all, 21 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three round of 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC. • Thirteen ties have gone to penalties, including six finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2012. The first two-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw. • There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16. • FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 round of 16, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two games also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie. • FC Bayern München's 7-0 second-leg defeat of FC Basel 1893 in the 2011/12 round of 16 is the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match. • Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF 1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times. • Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) and José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs. • Chelsea FC have become the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
