    Paper No 527 "The Sandwich Market" Nigel Hunter Good morning Ladies and `Gentlemen and thank you very much for giving me this opportunity to address you on the UK sandwich market, an industry I have been personally involved with for over 11 years. Now baking is an activity that has sustained human societies for thousands of years and many of you may have spent your whole working lives in it. So my 11 years may not seem so long to you. But the very first pre-packed sandwich in the UK was sold by M & S just 25 years ago, so I have personally experienced not far short of half the entire life of this fascinating and rapidly moving market sector! That is little misleading, of course, because sandwiches of one type or another had been eaten for centuries before the first thermoformed plastic skillet appeared on the shelf of a chilled display cabinet. The invention of the sandwich is often attributed to the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, who is supposed to have called for beef between two slices of toasted bread during a twenty-four hour marathon at the gaming tables in 1762. This may indeed have happened. Although the Earl was shortly to become a cabinet minister, he was indeed well known for gambling and general carousing and was a leading member of the Hell Fire Club. Another legacy of his is that in 1776, as First Lord of the Admiralty, the Earl outfitted and despatched James Cook on his famous around the world voyage and had the Sandwich Islands in the Pacific named after him, now better known as Hawaii! I digress.

    F1rstJobs Report 2018 The summer of 2018 represents the fourteenth year of F1rstJobs, a community-wide effort to provide meaningful summer work experience for North Shore youth—experiences that pave the way to meaningful career exploration and development. This report examines multiple aspects of the program including: funding sources and placement demographics, applicants and placements for the past several years, business participation, and also detailed survey results from businesses who have hired youth and participated in the F1rstJobs Program. Given the limited resources available for summer youth employment we must continue to seek out the most effective way to engage youth in the labor market. 2018 F1rstJobs Placements by Funding Source The F1rstJobs 2018 program had four different types of funding sources to pay for/supplement youth hires. Some of these funding sources have enrollment and eligibility requirements that must be met in order for the funds to be released to pay for youth employment. The following provides a description regarding the funding sources involved in the F1rstJobs Program: Business/Foundation/Individual contributions (BFI): Funds raised through foundations and private donors. These funds are used for youth who do not meet the eligibility requirements of the government grants and who have not yet had first work experience. These funds are administered by Essex County Community Foundation (ECCF). Direct hires by private companies: Youth are directly hired by a company or are placed into jobs that are not subsidized. There are no eligibility requirements. Most of these youth participate in the job readiness workshops and/or receive assistance in finding open positions.

    Property Market Review 1.1 This report is to provide a commercial property overview of Northampton for the Design, Development and Movement Framework. The main basis of the report will be an examination of the key property market sectors relevant to the town centre. Throughout this review we will aim to give particular consideration to opportunities and constraints in the different sectors specific to the Northampton area. Background 1.2 Northampton was designated a ‘new town’ in 1968, and is continuing to grow rapidly (Promis Property market Analysis). This has been reinforced Northampton being placed at the heart of Area Growth initiative determined by the ODPM, which could potentially increase the area’s population by 50%. 1.3 Northampton town centre currently has a reasonable retailing offer, with the majority of the main stream multiples present. Engineering is a key industry in the town. There is also a moderately developed office sector with a number of business parks in out of town locations (and a large distribution industry is growing in the region). 1.4 In order to ensure Northampton becomes a more attractive destination and continues to meet the needs of its growing population, this report aims to identify the development opportunities in the retail, leisure, office and industrial market in the town centre. Demographic and Socio Economic Factors 1.5 Northampton has a district population of 194,458 (Office of National Statistics, 2001 Census). In 2001 the Northampton area, contained a moderately above average proportion of working age adults (those between 18 and 44). There was also a relatively high proportion of children aged 0-14 and an under-representation of those ages over 65.
