  • Glastonbury Companion
John Cowper Powys’s A Glastonbury Romance: A Reader’s Companion Updated and Expanded Edition W. J. Keith December 2010 . “Reader’s Companions” by Prof. W.J. Keith to other Powys works are available at: http://www.powys-lannion.net/Powys/Keith/Companions.htm Preface The aim of this list is to provide background information that will enrich a reading of Powys’s novel/ romance. It glosses biblical, literary and other allusions, identifies quotations, explains geographical and historical references, and offers any commentary that may throw light on the more complex aspects of the text. Biblical citations are from the Authorized (King James) Version. (When any quotation is involved, the passage is listed under the first word even if it is “a” or “the”.) References are to the first edition of A Glastonbury Romance, but I follow G. Wilson Knight’s admirable example in including the equivalent page-numbers of the 1955 Macdonald edition (which are also those of the 1975 Picador edition), here in square brackets. Cuts were made in the latter edition, mainly in the “Wookey Hole” chapter as a result of the libel action of 1934. References to JCP’s works published in his lifetime are not listed in “Works Cited” but are also to first editions (see the Powys Society’s Checklist) or to reprints reproducing the original pagination, with the following exceptions: Wolf Solent (London: Macdonald, 1961), Weymouth Sands (London: Macdonald, 1963), Maiden Castle (ed. Ian Hughes. Cardiff: University of Wales Press, 1990), Psychoanalysis and Morality (London: Village Press, 1975), The Owl, the Duck and – Miss Rowe! Miss Rowe! (London: Village Press, 1975), and A Philosophy of Solitude, in which the first English edition is used.

  • House of Lords Library: Gillray Collection
Library: Special Collections House of Lords Library: Gillray Collection The House of Lords Library Gillray collection was acquired in 1899 as a bequest from Sir William Augustus Fraser (1826–1898). The collection consists of eleven folio volumes, retaining Fraser’s fine bindings: half red morocco with elaborate gold tooling on the spines. Ownership bookplates on the verso of the front boards show Fraser’s coat of arms and some of the prints bear his “cinquefoil in sunburst” collector’s mark. The volumes are made up of leaves of blue paper, on to which the prints are pasted. Perhaps surprisingly, given the age of the paper and adhesive, there is no evident damage to the prints. Due to the prints being stored within volumes, light damage has been minimised and the colour is still very vibrant. The collection includes a few caricatures by other artists (such as Thomas Rowlandson) but the majority are by Gillray. It is possible that the prints by other artists were mistakenly attributed to Gillray by Fraser. Where Fraser lacked a particular print he pasted a marker at the relevant chronological point in the volume, noting the work he still sought. These markers have been retained in the collection and are listed in the Catalogue. The collection includes some early states of prints, such as Britania in French Stays and a few prints that are not held in the British Museum’s extensive collection. For example, Grattan Addresses the Mob is listed in Dorothy George’s Catalogue as part of the House of Lords Library’s collection only.1 Volume I includes a mezzotint portrait of the author by Charles Turner, and two manuscript letters written by Gillray; one undated and addressed to the artist Benjamin West; the other dated 1797 and addressed to the publisher John Wright.

  • Forgotten Splendour
FORGOTTEN SPLENDOUR A Chronology of the North Shore Music Festival 1909 to 1939 by Andrew Cottonaro Beginning in 1909 and lasting until 1939, the North Shore Music Festival of Northwestern University was a significant musical and social event in the Chicago area. For a few days each Spring, the campus hosted a diverse body of performers in a series of grand concerts. Naturally, some of that era’s most eminent singers could be heard there. Their presence certainly helped to sell tickets and their artistry helped to sustain the festival as a popular and critical success. Now, sixty years later, the festival hardly even counts as a faded memory. To date, two books (in part), offer a general outline of the festival’s history, but both lack any detailed analysis of who appeared and what was actually sung. This is the first attempt to present a chronology of the vocal offerings (quite distinct from the orchestral offerings) at the festival. Northwestern University, the official sponsor of the festival, is located in Evanston, Illinois (USA). The town is a suburb of Chicago, directly north of the city and on the banks of Lake Michigan. Because of this geographic position, Evanston and the other cities of the area are called the North Shore, hence the origin of the festival’s name. Northwestern University was incorporated in 1850 and gradually won recognition for its academic excellence. The establishment of musical studies, however, was a tangled web of many failed efforts. In a final and desperate attempt to salvage musical education, the university’s board of trustees in 1891 appointed Peter Christian Lutkin (1858-1931) to direct musical studies, a post that he held until his death.

  • A New Genus of Terebratulid Brachiopod from the Siegenian of the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge
A new genus of terebratulid brachiopod from the Siegenian of the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge MENA SCHEMM−GREGORY and ULRICH JANSEN Schemm−Gregory, M. and Jansen, U. 2007. A new genus of terebratulid brachiopod from the Siegenian of the Rheini− sches Schiefergebirge. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 52 (2): 413–422. A new genus Crassirensselaeria (Terebratulida, Rhenorensselaeriidae) from the Siegenian (middle Lower Devonian) of the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge (= Rhenish Slate Mountains, Germany) with the type−species Crassirensselaeria crassicosta is erected. Exceptionally well−preserved material of this taxon has recently been obtained from a temporary outcrop at an ICE (= InterCityExpress) railway construction site close to Aegidienberg near Bonn. As representatives of Crassirensselaeria have hitherto been included into the terebratulid genus Rhenorensselaeria; they are compared with the two Lower Devonian species of that genus from the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge: Rhenorensselaeria strigiceps and Rh. demerathia. Crassirensselaeria is chiefly distinguished from these by more globular shells, the presence of very strong plications, long and strong dental plates, different ventral muscle field, and thickened cardinalia. Representatives of the new genus are excellent index fossils for the Siegenian of the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge, even in deposits of re− stricted−marine and probably brackish environments. New material of articulated specimens in life position shows that both rhenorensselaeriid genera lived in clusters with the longitudinal axes of the shells oriented steep or perpendicular to the seafloor. The new genus is abundant in the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge (Germany) and the northern Ardennes (Bel− gium), it also occurs in the Hrubý Jeseník Mountains (Czech Republic). Its occurrence in Cornwall (Great Britain), how− ever, is still questionable. Key words: Brachiopoda, Terebratulida, Crassirensselaeria, Rhenorensselaeria, Rheinisches Schiefergebirge, Devonian.

  • Oriental Diction and Theme in English Verse, 1740-1840
BULLETIN OF THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS HUMANISTIC STUDIES Vol. 2 May 1, 1916 No. 1 ORIENTAL DICTION AND THEME IN ENGLISH VERSE, 1740-1840 BY EDNA OSBORNE, A. M. Fellow-elect in English, The University of Kansas LAWRENCE, MAY, 1916 PUBLISHED BY THE UNIVERSITY PREFACE The writer's interest in Orientalism in English literature began at the University of Illinois in 1911, when Professor H. G. Paul, in a lecture on the Romantic poets, emphasized Byron's Oriental coloring and suggested that its study would make a good thesis. A little later this interest took form in a master's thesis on The Orientalism of Byron, which was accepted by the English Depart• ment of the University of Kansas in 1914. This preliminary study opened up a field which seemed boundless, and which offered very attractive appeals to the student of foreign influences on English literature. One does not need to be acquainted with Oriental languages or Oriental literature to trace with some profit the effects of Oriental interests on English verse and prose. It has been impossible to examine all the English verse from 1740 to 1840; but the chief poets have been reviewed with a good deal of care, and many of the minor ones. The Oriental drama offers a field by itself, and only a few dramas have been included in the present survey. It is hoped that all the main characteristics of Oriental diction and theme in the period have been recognized and given some attention in this paper. There has been no effort at a microscopic examina• tion, at inclusion of every possible poet, passage, or term.
