HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Herb Garden (1/7/2016) Rich in natural resources, Thailand is the home of countless species of flora, and the use of traditional herbal medicine has been a part of Thai life since ancient times. The Government has a policy to develop Thai herbal plants in a systematic manner and on a sustainable basis, so that Thai herbs will be applied with greater efficiency. It also aims to develop Thailand as a major source of medicinal plants in this part of the world. Thailand has great potential for achieving this aim. Anyone interested in learning more about Thai herbs is advised to visit Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Herb Garden, which is located on Highway 3191 in Map Kha subdistrict, Nikhom Phatthana minor district, Rayong province. Recognized as the first herb garden in Thailand, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Herb Garden was established in 1985 by the Petroleum Authority of Thailand, presently PTT Public Company. It is located on an area of 24 acres (60 rai), with the objective to preserve and develop natural resources for future generations. The garden consists of more than 260 indigenous herbs. There are about 20,000 herbal trees, which are categorized into 20 groups according to their medical proprieties. The garden also serves as a production source of certain kinds of medicinal plants for research and experimentation by the Chulabhorn Research Institute and Mahidol University. On the occasion of the 50th birthday anniversary of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in 2005, the structures and landscape of this garden were further developed to promote the place as a local wisdom source for the people and communities. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Herb Garden is divided into two sections. The first section is the herb garden, where various groups of medicinal plants are grown. Apart of serving as a source of knowledge about Thai herbs, it is also a place of recreation. There is a sightseeing shuttle bus service for visitors wanting to tour the garden. The second section is the exhibition hall at the Building in Commemoration of the 50th Birthday Anniversary of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. There are several exhibits featuring historical development of Thai folk wisdom in the area of herbal medicine. They are interactive, with the use of modern technology.
