MON BUDDHIST ARCHITECTURE IN PAKKRET DISTRICT, NONTHABURI PROVINCE, THAILAND DURING THONBURI AND RATTANAKOSIN PERIODS (1767-1932) Jirada Praebaisri* and Koompong Noobanjong Department of Industrial Education, Faculty of Industrial Education and Technology, King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Bangkok 10520, Thailand *Corresponding author: [email protected] Received: October 3, 2018; Revised: February 22, 2019; Accepted: April 17, 2019 Abstract This research examines the characteristics of Mon Buddhist architecture during Thonburi and Rattanakosin periods (1767-1932) in Pakkret district. In conjunction with the oral histories acquired from the local residents, the study incorporates inquiries on historical narratives and documents, together with photographic and illustrative materials obtained from physical surveys of thirty religious structures for data collection. The textual investigations indicate that Mon people migrated to the Siamese kingdom of Ayutthaya in large number during the 18th century, and established their settlements in and around Pakkret area. Located northwest of the present day Bangkok in Nonthaburi province, Pakkret developed into an important community of the Mon diasporas, possessing a well-organized local administration that contributed to its economic prosperity. Although the Mons was assimilated into the Siamese political structure, they were able to preserve most of their traditions and customs. At the same time, the productions of their cultural artifacts encompassed many Thai elements as well, as evident from Mon Buddhist temples and monasteries in Pakkret. The stylistic analyses of these structures further reveal the following findings. -1- Annex 2 PRINCESS SRINAGARINDRA AWARD The Princess Srinagarindra Award Foundation The Princess Srinagarindra Award Foundation was established in commemoration of the Centenary Birthday Anniversary of Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra Mahidol, His majesty the King’s mother on 21st October, 2000. The Foundation is under the Royal Patronage. The Award One Princess Srinagarindra Award is conferred annually upon an individual registered nurse and/or registered midwife or group of registered nurses and/or group of registered midwives who have made a significant contribution, through direct care, research, education or management, within the nursing or midwifery profession and/or for the development of the nursing or midwifery profession. Each award consists of a certificate and a sum of US$ 30,000. Nomination An individual registered nurse and/or registered midwife or group of registered nurses and/or group of registered midwives may be nominated by national nursing authorities or by individual or group of individuals in nongovernmental capacity, as candidates of the Award. Nominations are submitted to the Secretary General of the Princess Srinagarindra Award before May 31st each year. Screening and selection The Secretary General of the Princess Srinagarindra Award Foundation forwards the nomination forms to the Panel of Scientific Advisors for initial screening. Once reviewed by the Panel of Scientific Advisors, the nomination forms are forwarded to the International Award Committee, which comprises a number of world-renowned experts in the fields of nursing and public health. The International Award Committee considers and recommends names of the proposed Awardees to the Board of Trustees of the Princess Srinagarindra Award Foundation for final approval. -

King Chulalongkorn began to reform the old bureaucracy by managing revenues in 1873 and founding the State and Privy Councils in 1874. The King reformed the central administration into twelve ministries of the modern bureaucracy in 1892. Previous academic works about the creation of modern state focused on the causes of reformation, processes of reforms and problems after the reforms. Those works analyzed the policies, the structure of state modernization, and the difficulties of reformation. This article aims to examine the reformation’s effects on Siamese noblemen during the creation of modern state. The modern bureaucracy reorganized the royal court, including the government’s budget and tax collection. The nobles in the traditional bureaucracy had major duties in the manpower control and tax collection and earned the economic benefits from their duties, as opposed to officials in the modern bureaucracy who were professional and only paid salaries. This article examines how noble families in the Bangkok period adapted to be bureaucrats. The case study focuses on the Saeng-Xuto family, which ascended during the reign of King Rama I. -

The Emergence of Proto-entrepreneurial Groups in the City of Ayutthaya During the 17th-18th Centuries* Warangkana Nibhatsukit Abstract This article attempts to view the emergence of proto- entrepreneurs, groups of people whose social and political status were achieved as a result of commercial wealth, in the society of Ayutthaya. As Kings and nobilities needed trading experts to cope with international trade expansion, resident foreigners and mestizos were able to utilize their skill, and came to dominate commercial activities of Siam. Some outstanding merchants were drawn into the court of Siam and appointed officials while other maintained their wealth and economic strength by making close connections with high-rank nobles and officials. This consequence of social changes in context of economic changes during the 17th-18th centuries significantly reveals the emergence of proto-entrepreneurial groups who were forerunners of the bourgeoisie in Ratanakosin Era. Proto-entrepreneurial groups can be categorized into four groups: the private merchants and tax farmers in Ayutthaya, the trading expert officials and the court merchants, the traders and peddlers, and the local officials. * As part of the Ph.D. dissertation “Trade-related Groups in Ayutthaya Society, 1629-1767”, this article couldn’t have been possible without considerable helps and valuable guidance from Dr. Dhiravat Na Bombejra, my advisor, and Associate Professor Dr. Dhida Saraya, my co-advisor. It examines its underlying concept and mechanisms for conveying political power and social practice, along with the national and cultural identity that operates under an ideological framework. The study consists of two major parts. First, it investigates the monument as a political form of architecture: a symbolic device for the state to manifest, legitimize, and maintain power. The focus then shifts to an architectural form of politics: the ways in which ordinary citizens re-appropriated the Democracy Monument through semantic subversions to perform their social and political activities as well as to form their modern identities. Bhumibol Adulyadej, the King of Thailand
Bhumibol Adulyadej, the king of Thailand. The current king of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej, is the longest-reigning monarch in the world today, as well as Thailand's longest-reigning king ever. The beloved king's common name is pronounced "POO- mee-pohn uh-DOON-ja-deht"; his throne name is Rama IX. Early Life: Born a second son, and with his birth taking place outside of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej was never meant to rule. His reign came about through a mysterious act of violence. Since then, the King has been a calm presence at the center of Thailand's stormy political life. On December 5, 1927, a Thai princess gave birth to a son named Bhumibol Adulyadej ("Strength of the Land, Incomparable Power") in a Cambridge, Massachusetts hospital. It is a teaching and research program of interdisciplinary studies in the hmnanities, social sciences, and some natural sciences. It deals with Southeast Asia as a region, and with the individual cowitries of the area: Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The activities of the program are carried on _both at Cornell and in Southeast Asia. They include an Wldergraduate and graduate curriculum at Cornell which provides instruction by specialists in Southeast Asian cultural history and present-day affairs and offers intensive training in each of the major languages of the area. The Program sponsors group research projects on Thailand, on Indonesia, on the Philippines, and on the area's Chinese minorities. At the same time, individual staff and students of the Program have done field research in every Southeast Asian country. Public Participation in Adjudication in Thailand
PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN ADJUDICATION IN THAILAND Peerapong Pareerurk* I. INTRODUCTION The judicial power is an integral part of state sovereignty, separated from the legislative and the executive power. Exercise of the judicial power shall be in accordance with the rule of law. Under section 3 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand B.E. 2560 (A.D. 2017), “Sovereign power belongs to the Thai people. The King as Head of State shall exercise such power through the National Assembly, the Council of Ministers and the Courts in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution. The National Assembly, the Council of Ministers, Courts, Independent Organs and State agencies shall perform duties in accordance with the Constitution, laws and the rule of law for the common good of the nation and the happiness of the public at large”. Therefore, a judge must adjudicate any cases in reliance on the rule of law. Generally speaking, a judge shall consistently comprehend the equal protection of law and equality before the law. Moreover, the court must allow the public access to fair trials and to be able to bring up any evidence to prove oneʼs innocence. The verdict of the court must be effective, fast and fair. Consequently, it is essential that all rights and freedoms of each individual are protected by laws. As such, each individual must have a chance to participate in the process of judgement to the fullest possible extent as long as it does not negatively impact the independent discretion of the judge. II. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN ADJUDICATION UNDER THE CONSTITUTION OF THE KINGDOM OF THAILAND Unfortunately, the latest constitution of Thailand, the Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand, B.E.
