Russ died on Sunday as the result of a massive stroke. It came out of the blue and has completely taken us all by surprise. VRWC President has posted the following I first met Russ on my own return to regular racing at the Club in 2005, after many years away. Possessing a strong and efficient technique, a high level of fitness and a love of racing, Russ was a model for walkers of all ages, but particularly for those of mature years - myself included. He was a hard man to stay up with, let alone beat, once he had the bit between his teeth. He continued racing with the VRWC even when his energies were directed more towards administrative work with the Victorian Masters Association. Always affable and approachable, Russ was never far away from any group or gathering of Masters athletes where humour and lively conversation was on hand.

FRONT COVER: Johanna Jackson in action at the World Cup in Chihuahua, Mexico. PHOTO: by Jeff Salvage Editorial When travelling overseas, you appreciate being a race walker. Whilst having to walk many miles through airport terminals and connecting corridoors along flat straight surfaces seems to be a tedious burden for most people, I just love whizzing along past everyone and enjoy the journey. Never mind the slow travel belt everyone stands on to save themselves having to shuffling along a few hundred meters, it's a chance for another minute of high speed walking for me. No sitting around for an hour waiting for an announcement when you could be stretching your legs and enjoying another walk. Immigration control once asked me why I had come to the USA. When I told them I was there to compete in a race walk the officer replied; "Are you crapping me?" I was happy to give them a little demonstration, and race walked my way down the corridoor into the country. Meeting and chatting with race walkers from all over the world, you notice huge cultural differences, but enthusiasm for our sport is the same no matter who you ask. Competitive rivalries aside, we have a sport that really fosters a worldwide community spirit that we should be proud of. This edition of RWR re-introduces the international spirit into the magazine in a way I hope you’ll enjoy. Magazine info Race Walking Record (founded 1941) is the international magazine for the sport of walking and walking events, published each and every month.

  • Meeting Abstracts of the 56Th Annual Meeting of the APS Caribbean Division
Meeting Abstracts of the 56th Annual Meeting of the APS Caribbean Division Abstracts presented at the 56th Annual Meeting of the APS Caribbean Division meeting in Costa Rica, February 26–March 2, 2017. Recommended format for citing division meeting abstracts, using the first abstract below as an example, is as follows: Cotty, P. J. 2017. Region-wide aflatoxin reductions for improved food security, income, and health. (Abstr.) Phytopathology 107:S4.7. http://dx.doi.org/10.1094/PHYTO-107-7-S4.7 The abstracts are published as submitted. They were not edited at the APS headquarters office. http://dx.doi.org/10.1094/PHYTO-107-7-S4.7 © 2017 The American Phytopathological Society Region-wide aflatoxin reductions for improved food security, income, and health Peter J. Cotty (1) (1) USDA-ARS, University of Arizona, Tucson, U.S.A. Crop infection by several Aspergillus species is associated with accumulation of aflatoxins. Aflatoxins are genotoxins that retard human development, impair immune systems, reduce animal productivity, prevent access to markets, and cause cancer. Fungi that cause contamination are distributed throughout warm environments in crops, insects, uncultivated plants, soil, and air. Aflatoxins form in crops beginning during plant development and continuing through crop maturation, harvest, and storage, with crops remaining vulnerable until consumed. Human exposure occurs either upon consumption of contaminated crops and products of animals fed contaminated crops or when small crop fragments and fungal spores are respired. A simple biological control alters fungal populations so that aflatoxin producers are scarce and the quantities of aflatoxins in crops, and throughout the environment, are reduced to below levels of concern.
