Michael R. Bloomberg Mike Bloomberg is an entrepreneur and three-term mayor of New York City whose innovations in business, government, and philanthropy have made him a pioneering leader on critical issues facing America and the world. He has launched major efforts to save and improve lives, including America’s largest campaigns to prevent gun violence and fight the climate crisis, and global initiatives to tackle pressing public health issues. Bloomberg serves as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions, and as WHO Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries. Elected mayor just weeks after the attacks of September 11, 2001, Bloomberg led New York City’s resurgence. He spearheaded the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan, fought poverty with new programs that became national models, and turned around a failing school system. Bloomberg reduced carbon emissions by 13 percent, increased New Yorkers’ life expectancy by three years, and cut crime by a third while reducing incarceration by nearly 40 percent. Despite the Great Recession, he led the city to record job growth. After his third term in City Hall, he resumed leadership of Bloomberg LP, the financial technology and media company he founded in 1981, and expanded his philanthropic work. Bloomberg LP now employs some 20,000 people, and Bloomberg Philanthropies works on initiatives across five main focus areas: the environment, public health, education, government innovation, and the arts. He has also launched a series of major efforts to help fight the coronavirus. Bloomberg has given away $11.1 billion. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Business School. He is the father of two daughters, Emma and Georgina, and has two grandchildren. .

But the reality is, to respond with the urgency that is required, we all need to do more — and this is a critical year for the global fight against climate change. COVID-19 has touched every corner of the world. Some four million people have died — a number that is still rising — and many lost their jobs and livelihoods. To meet this moment, it’s essential that governments not only make bold commitments, but also adopt policies that ensure they reach their goals. But now, as vaccination rates go up worldwide — and public health restrictions begin to ease — it’s time to envision what our shared post-pandemic future looks This report highlights three areas where G20 members can take immediate like. Bloomberg was elected mayor just weeks after the attacks of September 11, 2001, and under his leadership, New York City rebounded faster and stronger than expected. His administration raised high school graduation rates by 40 percent, cut crime by a third, and increased life expectancy by three years. His economic policies, which supported entrepreneurs, small businesses, and emerging industries, helped to create more than 400,000 new jobs. Committed to making New York City resilient, Bloomberg implemented PlaNYC, a groundbreaking strategic sustainability plan. The grant was awarded to the City in March 2013 through the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Mayors Challenge, a competition that called upon American cities to generate innovative ideas that solve major challenges and improve city life. “Chicago has become a national leader in leveraging data and technology to create a smarter, more nimble and more responsive government,” said Mayor Emanuel. “This project will help us continue to move the ball forward, because becoming a more data-driven, innovative government allows us to continue to make Chicago a better place to live.” Chicago was selected as a Mayors Challenge winner out of a pool of over 300 applicant cities. The winning cities were chosen based on four criteria: vision, ability to implement, potential for impact and potential for replication.
