Message from the Chancellor’s Desk It is indeed a privilege to be invited to be the Chancellor of AMET University yet again. I find my journey with AMET quite satisfying when I see the joy in the lives of the family of every student who studied here. I have envisioned that to be economically empowered, one need not wait for generations but just need to do a course that changes the course of life for generations.

When one is at AMET, one’s lifetime opportunity has already been met. When the goings get tough the tough get going. Set the sail in the direction of the wind and the future. AMET is certainly generations ahead in thought and deed. The fact that AMET is the first university for Maritime Studies in India proves it.

Challenges are aplenty for both parents and students right from their choice of school to the choice of a career-oriented course. Thought process is not needed to join a rat-race; one falls into it by chance only to regret. However, choosing a course that is internationally acclaimed, technologically trouble-shooting, economically empowering, socially contributing, environmentally responsible, ethically sound, personally satisfying is rare, but AMET rears the rare, and prepares students with care as world citizens.

World’s best thought leaders have been associated with AMET. Research at AMET is not for a thesis but for a solution to a problem. AMET has been effectively contributing to the niche industries like Shipping, Ship-building, Ocean Engineering, Logistics, Petroleum, IT, Food and Pharma (through bio-technology and marine-biology) apart from serious orientation to Personal Safety and Social Responsibility.

International is not a tag but it is the nature and nurture that makes it so. Having been tied up with foreign universities right from its inception, and with the presence of over five hundred students from all over the world, a history of internationally acclaimed leaders from academics and industry as former Chancellor and Members of International Board of Studies make it truly international. Besides many an Award that adorns the cupboards, the Quality of Education at AMET is accredited by none other than organizations like Lloyd, ISO and CRISIL. A history of record placements and MOUs with every major shipping company remains a feat unbeatable.

I congratulate the Vice-Chancellor, the Directors, all the Heads of the Departments, and Faculty for their incessant progress and achievements till date. Wishing you all the best.

Dr. J. Ramachandran Chancellor

Message from the Vice - Chancellor’s Desk

Dear Ametians,

India for a longer time has been considered as a major supplier of trained human resources to the global shipping industry and known for their competency, efficiency, besides cost- effective. Though India owns just about one percent of the global shipping fleet, still provides more than six percent of the total seafarers to the World fleet, which could be evidenced by the fact that about 90,000 Indian-born seafarers are working on-board ships and proudly sailing in the international waters today.

AMET, being the pioneer Institution in India in providing maritime education and training has the credit of ensuring quality in conducting innovative and employable academic and research programmes, for the last two decades. Thus, it could attract thousands of aspiring seafarers from India and abroad to its fold to acquire adequate knowledge and to become professionally trained Mariners all these years.

The above fact could be touched upon that today more than ten thousand AMETIAN graduates are absorbed by various International Shipping Companies which would certainly pronounce the core strength of AMET. The continuing success of the AMET in propelling trained talents all over the world is made possible, largely depends on its well industry- disciplined faculty, well established infrastructure and well-defined curriculum of global standards, besides the excellent placement record at its credit.

Moreover, AMET has the principle of bringing innovation in the learning process year after year to satisfy and cope-up with the changing needs of the Shipping Industry. As such the academic year 2018-19 is going to be the year of accomplishment for AMET for yet another innovation, viz. introduction of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), to provide Value added skill oriented programmes, Technology driven digital learning methods, besides to strive hard for getting placement for everyone. Wishing you all best of Luck

Col. Dr. G. Thiruvasagam Vice-Chancellor

Celebrations at AMET

There are many important things in life. Learning, growing, loving, and exploring are all things that each person should take time for. Celebration is another thing that everyone should take time for. Celebration adds an excitement and a lot of fun to life. Festivals is a celebration of life. These celebrations bring peace and joy to the humanity and break the monotony of life. Festivals are numerous in our country. We can divide festivals into three kinds; National, Religious and Sensational. There are many important things in life. Learning, growing, loving, and exploring are all things that each person should take time for.

Celebration is another thing that everyone should take time for. Celebration adds an excitement and a lot of fun to life. Celebration can happen for a variety of formal or informal reasons. There is something deep inside humanity that loves to celebrate the best things in life. Celebrations of all kinds give us the excitement to keep making it through days that seem purposeless. Have you ever felt like life was a little too routine? I’m confident that by the time the next holiday or birthday celebration rolled around you were grateful for the change of pace. People in our country love celebrating the festivals with their near and dear ones. Each Indian festival has its own unique way of celebration and people follow the tradition while celebrating the same.

Celebration allows us to relax and unwind in the midst of busy and crazy lives. We use celebrations as an excuse to gather with the friends and family that mean that most to us. We also enjoy celebrations because they allow us to remember the things in life that truly matter. As we celebrate, we allow the stresses of life to fall behind and we spend our time doing things we love with the people we love. People of India also hold great regard for the National festivals of the country. Thirukural Gandhi Jayanti, Independence Day and Republic Day are the three national festivals of our country. These festivals are a symbol of unity and progress. They remind us of our patriotic leaders who served the country selflessly. National festivals are celebrated with equal zeal. The entire atmosphere is filled with the feeling of patriotism during these festivals. There is something about a great celebration that

reminds us of the purpose of our life and of the power of our closest relationships. Perhaps the best thing about celebration of any kind is that it makes our lives richer and more meaningful. The National, Religious and Sensational festivals are celebrated in Our University with great honour.

Teaching Beyond the Classroom

148 TEACHING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Teaching and learning can become inherently spontaneous and student-centred when moved from the confines of the classroom into the world at large. From the collaborative learning atmosphere that results from the unique relationships developed outside the classroom, to the deep learning that occurs when students must put into practice “in the real world” what they have theorized about from behind a desk, field experiences are unmatched in their learning potential. Field experiences early in a student’s career can be formative and can inspire students to continue in a field.

Learning experiences outside the classroom are inherently interdisciplinary. When we go out into the world, we encounter it as a whole and are forced to engage multiple modalities, no matter which pair of disciplinary “lenses” we intended to wear. Therefore, scientists and humanists alike do well to consider the ways in which other disciplines might enrich their own disciplinary approach to their field.

One way to escape the confines of the classroom and to afford students opportunities to grow is to encourage students to learn from and to serve the surrounding community. In its simplest form, this may involve field trips into a community where students will have occasions to have discussions with community members or local experts on an issue related to course content. Even greater learning potentials and community benefits rest in more intensive forms of community engagement in the form of service learning projects. These projects, typically designed by both faculty and community partners, allow for students to learn in highly effective ways while helping a community address its needs.

In all of these experiences, student growth can be extensive, whether it is through improved critical thinking and problem solving skills, greater personal efficacy and leadership development, or enhanced social responsibility and career opportunities

CLUB ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO EXTEND LEARNING

152

CLUB ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO EXTEND LEARNING

Clubs and Activities Are Important, Too College life is busy. Students are up early to get into classes on time, to maths, physics, chemistry and other classes, and have homework to do. So, it is important to participate in extracurricular clubs, sports, or community groups. Recruiters look at the things students do after college hours like participating in sports clubs or teams, or community volunteer work. No doubt about it, maintaining good grades is important for getting into company.

In Our University we lay due emphasis on different activities through active participation in various social, athletic and artistic clubs and societies. We guide students to discover and create their own understanding. Besides academics, co scholastic activities form an integral part of the curriculum. This aspect includes wide range of co-curricular activities. All the students are obliged to gain practical experience in the course of their academic education.

The concept of Clubs is seen as an opportunity for adaptation to life in the group, forming good life long habits and cultivating a voluntarist spirit. Club activities supplement academics and give the students practical training which they require in day to day life.In order to fully develop the whole person, all students are required to participate in either a yearlong club or seasonal sport. It is our philosophy that such participation is vital in developing well-rounded students, broadening student interests, and encouraging a strong ownership of AMET.

In the competitive world, companies are now looking for students who show participation in activities beyond the classroom. In order for a yearlong activity to be counted for a student’s participation requirement, the club or activity must either be academic, competitive or service oriented. A strong commitment is required. In Our University various club activities are organized giving an opportunity to the students to display their talent.

INDUSTRY-ACADEMIA CONNECT

INDUSTRY-ACADEMIA CONNECT

With the advent of globalization and opening up of Indian economy to outside world, competition among industries has become stiff. To solve their engineering problems they look up now to engineering institutions. Similarly, there is an urgent need to prepare engineering students for jobs in multinational companies, by exposing them to newer technologies and engineering methodologies. These objectives can only be achieved well by bridging the gap between industry and the academic institutions. Better interaction between technical institutions and industry is the need of the hour. This will have great bearing on the engineering curriculum, exposure of engineering students to industrial atmosphere and subsequent placement of young graduating engineers in industries across the country.

Industries and institutes have been collaborating for over a century, but the rise of a global knowledge economy has intensified the need for strategic partnerships. The Institutes are imparting the basic knowledge and skill, but the Industry-Institute Interaction will enable to undertake research by staff and students relevant to the industry.

The Industry-Institute Interaction should be designed to run longer period for preparing the manpower of world class in the field of science and technology by inculcating the various skills required by the industry, thereby contributing to the economic and social development at large. With several layers of collaboration being built by the government to develop the Make in India program, the manpower needs have to be fulfilled in order to witness the required development.

Though availability of manpower is abundant in India, well equipped manpower with employability skills is the need of the hour. There is a need to create avenues for a close academia and industry interaction through all the phases of technology development, starting from conceptualizing to commercialization. AMET has crafted a unique Industry- Institution Interaction initiative as one of its core pillars.

Conclusion

AMET University Annual Activity Report 2019-20 was characterized by unparalleled challenges and extraordinary opportunities. It was a year of significant achievements even in the midst of declining resources. In these uncertain times, as conditions continue to evolve in unexpected ways, Our University will continue to strive for excellence while also becoming more agile as a world class University, balancing its historical responsibilities while continuing to forge new directions by conducting more than 200 academic related activities.

AMET University can be justifiably proud of the achievements of our students academically, culturally, and on the sports field. We as a University will continue to strive to best serve the students, including targeting areas where achievement isn’t as high as it could be. Further developing support for achievement and students literacy has already yielded positive results and we hope to continue this trend in the forthcoming academic year 2019-20.
