January 2016 Clare Boat Club Clare College, Trinity Lane Cambridge CB2 1TL, UK Boathouse Manager/Coach post: further information Clare Boat Club (CBC) serves a Cambridge college of some 480 undergraduate students and 210 postgraduates, with equal numbers of men and women. About a third of these will row at some time in their student life, and about 100 will be active in any one year. These numbers represent amongst the highest percentage participation of any Cambridge college. The club has a reputation for being enthusiastic, inclusive and friendly. CBC boats aspire to a high level of achievement. The men’s and women’s first boats are mostly in the top half of the first division in the Lents and Mays bumps races. The club competes regularly on the River Cam, in races across the region, and at the tideway Head of the River races. In most years, students who have learned to row in CBC compete for Cambridge University crews in the races against Oxford. As Head Coach your role would be to develop this headline rowing success, whilst nurturing the strength and depth of rowing throughout the club. As Boathouse Manager, you would maintain the boat fleets of CBC and of Clare Hall BC, and run the Clare boathouse, with its facilities used by CBC, CHBC and Champion of the Thames RC. Your responsibilities are specified formally in the accompanying job description. These responsibilities are diverse and correspondingly interesting and challenging. However, success in the job will require you to be a dedicated enthusiast for the sport of rowing and to develop a strong commitment to rowing in Clare. Because much of the student rowing activity is compressed into three ten to twelve week periods in and around terms, you must be prepared to concentrate your efforts in these periods. Pressures of student work also mean that many training outings happen in the early morning, at the weekend, and – in the summer term – in the evenings, and you must be flexible enough to meet reasonable requests for coaching at these times. Races off the river Cam are typically at weekends, and you will have an essential role in transporting boats and coaching at these events. Off-Cam training camps are also arranged, at which your coaching would be required. You will need to have a clean driving licence that qualifies you to tow a boat trailer or be prepared to take the necessary test for this qualification. As Boathouse Manager/Coach you would be based at a distinguished and well- appointed boathouse about a mile from the College, but which forms part of the community of college and town rowing clubs on the Cam. You will need to enjoy both working independently and interacting with a wide range of individuals and groups. You will have the maturity, drive, skill and sensitivity to coach everyone from the beginner to the University rower, and to train student rowing coaches. You will need to deal effectively with equipment suppliers, College administrators and staff, former CBC rowers, members of partner clubs, and with other members of the Cambridge rowing community. CBC recognizes the importance of having a talented coach to drive and inspire its rowers to further successes, and your experience in this area will be highly valued. A British Rowing coaching qualification will be an advantage in demonstrating your coaching ability, though proven experience and the potential and drive to develop this ability to a high level will also be important. You will guide the student captains and other officers of the club in the challenge of setting rowing goals and training plans for the club and of liaising effectively to achieve these goals. You will have the knowledge and technical ability to repair and rig rowing and sculling boats and associated rowing equipment, and a pride in the organization and cleanliness of the boathouse. You will be organized enough to fulfill in parallel the management, maintenance and coaching components of your job. Clare College owns and manages its boathouse, but some rack space and facilities are shared with another college (Clare Hall Boat Club) and with a flourishing town club (Champion of the Thames Rowing Club). CBC values its partnerships with these clubs well beyond the financial benefits that they bring, and you should be keen to foster good relationships with these clubs and, in particular, to maintain Clare Hall boats on the same basis as Clare boats. Your responsibilities as Boathouse Manager would include helping the Senior Treasurer to set an annual budget for the club and to monitor expenditure within the budget targets. Due to the generosity of former Clare rowers, CBC has a trust fund sufficient to pay for the majority of the running expenses of the club. However, CBC continues to rely on alumni donors for replacement boats and for new projects. You would be asked to contribute some time and enthusiasm to the CBC alumni rowing events and reunions. The post on offer is for a fixed term of one year from 1 April 2016, as temporary cover for another employee. The boathouse manager/coach will be paid at £25,888 per year. The college offers membership of a salary pension scheme and some fringe benefits such as a bonus and complimentary lunches.
