VANDERBILT JOURNAL OF ENTERTAINMENT & TECHNOLOGY LAW VOLUME 18 SPRING 2016 NUMBER 3 Invisible Labor, Invisible Play: Online Gold Farming and the Boundary Between Jobs and Games Julian Dibbell ABSTRACT When does work become play and play become work? Courts have considered the question in a variety of economic contexts, from student athletes seeking recognition as employees to professional blackjack players seeking to be treated by casinos just like casual players. Here, this question is applied to a relatively novel context: that of online gold farming, a gray-market industry in which wage-earning workers, largely based in China, are paid to play fantasy massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) that reward them with virtual items that their employers sell for profit to the same games' casual players. -
“Pro” Trial Gives Google Stadia App Short-Lived Boost in Q2
Publication date: 10 Aug 2020 Author: Louise Shorthouse, Ph.D. Research Analyst I, Games and Apps Free “Pro” trial gives Google Stadia app short-lived boost in Q2 Brought to you by Informa Tech Free “Pro” trial gives Google Stadia app short- 1 lived boost in Q2 Table of Figures: louiseshorthouseinformacom_2020_8_10_9_59_30_googlestadiajpg1...........................................2 © 2020 Omdia. All rights reserved. Unauthorized reproduction prohibited. Free “Pro” trial gives Google Stadia app short- 2 lived boost in Q2 On April 8, nearly five months after the launch of Stadia, Google offered a two-month free trial for Stadia Pro. The trial extended to all 14 supported countries, and offered free access to nine games including Destiny 2, PUBG, Steamworld Heist and Zombie Army 4. Once the free trial ended, players had to pay $9.99 per month to continue to access Stadia. In March, the Stadia app was downloaded an average of 1,739 times per day across App Store and Google Play. After the free trial was introduced, according to Priori Data, daily downloads spiked at almost 32,000 – an increase of 1700%. However, the rate of installs quickly normalized, and now sits around pre-trial levels at less than 5,000 per day. louiseshorthouseinformacom_2020_8_10_9_59_30_googlestadiajpg1 This illustrates the importance of lowering the entry barrier for new services, and it perhaps also indicates that it is never too late to galvanize an audience. Retention, however, is extraordinarily low for the Stadia app – with just shy of 16% day 1 retention, dropping to 0.7% at day 30 on Android devices, which suggests that the content is not compelling enough to afford stickiness. -

Hence, this chapter reads the game Cookie Clicker for its motivating features to illustrate the logic and limits of gamification. In other words, they are games played online. Browser games are typically run using standard web technologies or browser plugins and encompass almost all video game genres, as well as single or multiplayer format. Browser games can be portable and paired with multiple devices, web browsers, and operating systems. The creation of browser games usually involves standard web technologies as a frontend, and other technologies as a backend. Browser games are played alone with the browser and often require no additional installation or software. Typically, they are written in browser-based languages, including JavaScript, HTML5, and PHP. Also, they may utilize some additional languages (i.e. Flash, Java, and Silverlight) for backend processes and supplementary browser plugins. Browser games can vary in genre from shooting to racing, and to complex role-playing games with a long-playing life. -

Non-Serious Serious Games
Press Start Non-Serious Serious Games Non-Serious Serious Games Matthew Hudson Toshiba Design Center Abstract Serious games have been shown to promote behavioural change and impart skills to players, and non-serious games have proven to have numerous benefits. This paper argues that non-serious digital games played in a ‘clan’ or online community setting can lead to similar real world benefits to serious games. This paper reports the outcomes from an ethnographic study and the analysis of user generated data from an online gaming clan. The outcomes support previous research which shows that non-serious games can be a setting for improved social well- being, second language learning, and self-esteem/confidence building. In addition this paper presents the novel results that play within online game communities can impart benefits to players, such as treating a fear of public speaking. This paper ultimately argues that communities of Gamers impart ‘serious’ benefits to their members. Most glaring issue was the lack of controller support, and I had to use Steam Big Picture to get the simple controls working. The controls use the strange jump-float movements from old Jump 1 / 2 Man games, up until the player becomes a bouncing ball with erratic movements. -
Small Team, Big Licence SMALL TEAM
Interface Small team, big licence SMALL TEAM 44 / wfmag.cc Interface Small team, big licence SMALL TEAM BIG LICENCE Inside the tiny studios making games based on giant Hollywood properties WRITTEN BY AARON POTTER hile there’s definitely an upside to making a game based on a highly revered film, TV, or comic book, for the longest time, development teams working on licensed video games did so knowing that it came with a certain stigma attached. Known in industry circles for having much tighter production schedules and deadlines, games based on recognisable properties have long been synonymous with poor quality and a broad streak of cynicism. Of course, not all licensed games are bad. Rocksteady’s Arkham series gave players the thrill of being Batman; 2014’s Alien: Isolation recreated the aesthetic of Ridley Scott’s 1979 movie in painstaking (and chilling) detail, and the recently released Fallen Order has been praised in some quarters as the best Star Wars game from EA to date. But for every one of these home runs, there’s a dud like the assorted Iron Man tie-ins from 2008, or the widely derided Aliens: Colonial Marines, released in 2013. Whether they’re good, bad, or indifferent, triple-A licensed games will always exist in some capacity. But as we enter an era of gaming where more and more creatives are breaking away to form smaller studios, we’re now seeing what can happen when tiny teams get to work on some of the most famous IPs in the world. One such team is Illfonic, a Colorado-based developer currently working on the PlayStation exclusive Predator: Hunting Grounds, due out later this year. -
