    U.S. Lighthouse Society ~ Lighthouses of the United Kingdom Caldey Island Lighthouse (Caldey Island Wales) A NON-PROFIT HISTORICAL & EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY U.S. Lighthouse Society ~ Lighthouses of the United Kingdom History Caldey Island lies about 3 miles off the south coast of Pembrokeshire facing the town and harbor of Tenby. it is 1½ miles long and less that ¾ mile wide. In 1131 the island was donated to the Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Tiron in France. In 1536 the monks were expelled from the island and it was not until 1906 that an Anglican Benedictine brotherhood bought the island and erected the present monastery. In the early 1920ʹs it was sold to the Order of the Reformed Cistercians. On the summit of the island, not far from the old Priory, stands the lighthouse which was erected by Trinity House in 1829 at a cost of £3,380 11s 7d. On either side of the tower and connected to it are two dwellings which were occupied by the keepers and their families prior to the conversion of the station to automatic unmanned operation in 1927. Caldey lighthouse was the last Trinity House lighthouse to be powered by acetylene gas until its modernization which was completed in November 1997 when it was converted to mains electricity. It is a natural coast with limestone cliffs and rocky coast except at Lydstep Haven where there is a large static caravan park fronting an east facing sheltered beach and a contrasting remote beach at Sandtop Bay on Caldey. The sea feels relatively sheltered and there are small recreational craft emanating from Lydstep Haven and from Tenby, although Caldey Sound has tidal flows and is treated with caution. Key Characteristics Sea enclosed by limestone mainland coast to the north and east and by Caldey Island to the east separated by Caldey Sound, with distinct east-west ridge to the north. Mainly rural south facing natural mainland coast with limestone cliffs with semi-natural grassland and pastoral coastal edge. Dramatic vertically bedded limestone cliffs, caves and arches and small east facing beaches to the west of Lydstep Point. Lydstep Point with cliffs, coastal quarries and limestone grassland. Sheltered east-facing sweep of the beach at Lydstep Haven with associated large organised caravan park and facilities. Remote, tranquil and isolated coast of Caldey Island with St Margarets Island and its deserted settlement.

Whether they mounted their attacks from the north or the south, when Norman barons invaded Wales after the Norman Conquest of 1066, they almost invariably ended up in West Wales and consolidated their position by building fortresses.     Chair’s Foreword When the Sea Empress ran aground in 1996, spilling 72,000 tons of crude oil onto the Pembrokeshire Coast, it triggered a full-scale clean up operation across Pembrokeshire bringing together volunteers and paid hands alike to protect our beautiful coastline. Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum was born from the Sea Empress disaster as the need for an independent body to address issues facing our coast became apparent. Just like the response to that disaster, we work to bring people together - to start conversations and to inspire change, and although we have developed significantly over the years, our mission has not changed; to support sustainable development and to protect our coast and marine environments for current and future generations to enjoy, particularly given the challenges of climate change. Having been previously hosted by the Port of Milford Haven, 2014 was a ground- breaking year for us as we became a completely independent Community Interest Company and since then the business has gone from strength to strength. PCF has developed innovative projects which are considered best practice across the UK and our long-term relationships with coastal partners have been built over the years, based on trust and understanding. 2017 has been our most successful year to date and I am very proud of the hard work and dedication of the team. It is their knowledge and expertise combined with their love of the coast that makes PCF unique.
