JYP Entertainment released a total number of 9 Day6 albums including 3 studio albums and 6 extended plays. All of them were distributed by KT Music (currently known as Genie Music ) and iRiver (later as Dreamus after the company changed its name). The members of Day6 are very active when it comes to composing the music they release. They also write the lyrics for all their songs (especially Young K ). The KPop group debuted on September 7, 2015 with their first EP The Day . Here's the list of all releases of the band in order. The Day Mini Album. The first extended play and the group's first album was titled The Day and was released on September 7, 2015 under JYP Entertainment . It was distributed by KT Music . It is the first and the last release featuring Junhyeok who left the group on February 27, 2016. The members of Day6 are credited as both composers and writers for most of the songs. The Day is composed of 6 including Freely , Out Of My Mind , the title Congratulations , Habits , Like That Sun and Colors . The EP managed to reached number 2 on the Billboard's US World Albums . A special version of the album with a different cover was later released in Thailand. The Day6 album comes in a slip cover. Inside you will find a jewel case with the same photo as on the Thai edition created with several transparent layers. In the case you will also find a small booklet with lyrics. A photobook showcasing all 6 members is also included but no photo cards are present. Daydream Mini Album. The second mini album of Day6 came out on March 30, 2016 under JYP Entertainment . KT Music was responsible for the distribution. Daydream consists of 6 tracks - First Time , Blood , Letting Go (Noha Noha Noha) , Sing Me , Wish and Hunt . Letting Go serves as the lead track. Once again the members were active during the producing process. The EP peaked at the 4th position on the Gaon's South Korean Weekly Album Chart . Letting Go was re-recorded and rereleased on another of Day6 albums - Sunrise . As in the previous case a special Thai version of Daydream was also released. The extended play comes in a sturdy slip cover (145 x 130 mm) with a window showcasing the transparent plastic layers that create the cover. Inside the box you will find a 60 pages photobook and a jewel case (142 x 125 mm) with the CD and a lyrics booklet. No photo cards are included with this release but one poster was issued. It measures 762 x 525 mm. Sunrise Studio Album. Sunrise is the first full-length album of the group. It was released by JYP Entertainment on June 7, 2017. It gathers all the 10 tracks from the Every DAY6 Project that were released so far (from January to May) and at the same time is the sixth entry into the project. It is composed of Lean On Me , I Smile , Man in a Movie , Wait , How Can I Say , Letting Go , I Would , Goodbye Winter , I'm Serious , Say Wow , Dance Dance , My Day , You Were Beautiful and Congratulations . Congratulations is the re-recorded final version without the vocals of Junhyeok while Letting Go is a rebooted version. I Smile is the lead single. A special Taiwanese version - which came out on the same day as the South Korean - includes the Chinese version of Congratulations . The Thai version had its premiere on August 18, 2017. The Korean edition comes in a hard cardboard box and for the third time features the transparent cover made of layers that was introduced with The Day . In the box you will find a jewel case with both CD disk and lyrics booklet (120 x 120 mm), a 72 pages photobook of a size of 142 x 125 mm, 2 photo cards that look like a polaroid photos (108 x 86 mm). The cards were added randomly out of 14 different sheets (7 of Studio version and 7 of Night version). If you were lucky enough you could also get a very rare special card - either Live Day Card (122 x 115 mm) or Special Gift Event Card (55 x 123 mm). 1 poster with a photo of all Day6 members came with the studio album (762 x 525 mm). Moonrise Studio Album. The next of the group's discography is the second studio album Moonrise which came out on December 6, 2017 and was distributed by Genie Music . It is the final installment of the Every DAY6 Project and contains all 10 tracks released from July to November 2017. It also includes all final versions (without Junhyeok's vocals) of the songs from the group's first mini album The Day . These were not released digitally and are available only on the physical edition. On the CD you will find Better Better , I Like You , What Can I Do , I'll Remember , Whatever! , Be Lazy , Hi Hello , I Loved You , When You Love Someone , All Alone , Pouring , I Need Somebody , I'll Try , Colors , Like That Sun , Out of My Mind , Habits and Freely . I Like You is the title track. Moonrise reached the second position on the Gaon 's chart. The physical edition comes in two versions - Gold Moon and Silver Moon . Both come with CD disk in an envelope, an 88 pages photobook (175 x 240 mm), a transparent layered cover (the same in both version) of a dimensions of 125 x 125 mm, an accordion folding posters which you can rip apart (875 x 240 mm), and 2 random photo cards that are added from a lot of 15 which is divided into three types - Every DAY6 , My Day and I. The photo cards are like a pieces of a jigsaw puzzle - they form an image when combined. 6 different posters of a size of 762 x 525 mm were issued for this Day6 album. Additionally with some luck you could find a rare event card - a Full MOON pass or a Half MOON pass. Both in a size of 65 x 130 mm. Shoot Me : Youth Part 1 Mini Album. The third extended play of Day6 titled Shoot Me : Youth Part 1 was released on June 26, 2018. iRiver was responsible for the distribution. It features Shoot Me as the lead single and consists of other 6 songs - Warning , Somehow , Feeling Good , Talking To and Still . On the physical edition you will also find the instrumental version of Shoot Me . Young K wrote by himself (except Talking To which was written by him and Jae ) the lyrics for all the songs. All members took part in the composing process. Shoot Me : Youth Part 1 is available - similarly to the previous of Day6 albums - in two versions including Bullet and Trigger . Both are composed of a CD disk of a diameter of 125 x 125 mm, a square 80 pages photobook (158 x 150 mm), 1 sheet of tattoo stickers of a size of 65 x 90 mm (1 type in both versions of the mini album), and 2 randomly chosen photo cards - 1 from a lot of 20 called Selfie plus 1 from a lot of 10 called Thriller (only in Bullet version) or Romance (only in Trigger version). This time instead of the whole set of transparent layers only one random comes in the package. The set measures 135 x 135 mm and is the same in both versions of Shoot Me . 7 variants of the poster were released for the album. You could get 1 random sheet of a size of 762 x 525 mm. A special benefit was added to the package if you pre-ordered the album. You could get a set of paper standees with the silhouettes of all members. Additionally you could find in the package a random autographed polaroid photo. Only 200 were issued so it was extremely difficult to get. Remember Us : Youth Part 2 Mini Album. The second installment into the Youth series titled Remember Us : Youth Part 2 was released on December 10 by JYP Entertainment and was distributed by iRiver . The EP consists of 7 songs for which the music and the lyrics were created by the members of Day6. On the CD you will find Hurt Road , Days Gone By (title track), Headache , 121U , So Cool , Marathon , Beautiful Feeling and the instrumental version of Days Gone By which is available only on the physical edition. Remember Us peaked at the 3rd position on the South Korean Gaon chart. A Taiwanese edition was released a month later on January 18, 2019. A special comeback show was held on December 10 and it was broadcasted through the group's official channel on V Live . Remember Us : Youth Part 2 - similarly to the several previous Day6 albums - is available in two versions - Rew and FF . Both are of the same size and features all members on the cover. The package consists of a CD disk with the music placed behind the front side of the cover, a 80 pages photobook (193 x 193 mm), 1 sheet of deco stickers - which is identical in both versions of the EP - featuring the logo of Day6 and the title of Remember Us (120 x 148 mm), 1 transparent (clear) card randomly chosen out of 5 (135 x 135 mm), a random postcard (out of 5, 148 x 120 mm), and 2 random photo cards chosen out of 40 different sheets composed of Past version (10 types), Present version (20 types) and Future version (10 types).

“ERSATZ AS THE DAY IS LONG”: JAPANESE POPULAR MUSIC, THE STRUGGLE FOR AUTHNETICITY, AND COLD WAR ORIENTALISM Robyn P. Perry A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2021 Committee: Walter Grunden, Advisor Jeremy Wallach © 2021 Robyn P. Perry All Rights Reserve iii ABSTRACT Walter Grunden, Advisor During the Allied Occupation of Japan, Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (SCAP) Douglas MacArthur set forth on a mission to Americanize Japan. One way SCAP decided this could be done was by utilizing forms of media that were already popular in Japan, particularly the radio. The Far East Network (FEN), a network of American military radio and television stations in Japan, Okinawa, Guam, and the Philippines, began to broadcast American country & western music. By the early 1950s, Japanese country & western ensembles would begin to form, which initiated the evolution toward modern J-pop. During the first two decades of the Cold War, performers of various postwar subgenres of early Japanese rock (or J-rock), including country & western, rockabilly, kayōkyoku, eleki, and Group Sounds, would attempt to break into markets in the West. While some of these performers floundered, others were able to walk side-by-side with several Western greats or even become stars in their own right, such as when Kyu Sakamoto produced a number one hit in the United States with his “Sukiyaki” in 1963. The way that these Japanese popular music performers were perceived in the West, primarily in the United States, was rooted in centuries of Orientalist preconceptions about Japanese people, Japanese culture, and Japan that had recently been recalibrated to reflect the ethos of the Cold War.

  • WRESTLING with OR EMBRACING DIGITIZATION in the MUSIC INDUSTRY the Contrasting Business Strategies of J-Pop and K-Pop
Parc & Kawashima / Wrestling with or Embracing Digitization 23 WRESTLING WITH OR EMBRACING DIGITIZATION IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY The Contrasting Business Strategies of J-pop and K-pop Jimmyn Parc Seoul National University and Sciences Po Paris [email protected] Nobuko Kawashima Doshisha University [email protected] Abstract Digitization has significantly changed the process for producing and consuming music: from analogue to digital, albums to songs, possess to access, audio to visual, and end products to promotional products. In this globalized digital era, actively embracing digitization would likely help enhance the competitiveness of the music industry. The rise of K-pop and the decline of J-pop clearly demonstrate the different results from whether to embrace or wrestle with digitization. The Korean music industry recognized changes brought on by digitization earlier and was more active in responding with effective strategies. By contrast, the Japanese music industry did not immediately respond to these changes but stuck to its rent-seeking behavior in order to take advantage of its larger market size and ‘sophisticated’ copyright regime. The implications from this paper is that business activities are the core element for creating and enhancing competitiveness of the music industries. Copyright is a form of legal protection given to many kinds of created works such as musical compositions or songs, lyrics, records (CDs, LPs, singles, 45s, cassettes, DAT, etc.) poems, books, films, TV shows, computer software and even commercials. For a work to be protected under copyright, its must be: 1) “original” which means that it was not copied from any other source; 2)“fixed in a tangible medium of expression” which means that it exists in some reasonably permanent or stable form so that a person can perceive it and reproduce it; and 3) have a minimum degree of creativity. For the musician, copyrights can protect both songs (which usually consists of a melody and includes lyrics if the song has words) and recordings (CDs, mp3s, LPs, cassettes, DAT, and any other recording). The “fixed” requirement means that there is no protection for a song that is only in your head. A song may be "fixed" by writing it down, recording it (even on a handheld recorder), or saving it to a hard drive on a computer. Playing a song live does not meet the “fixed” requirement.
