No words can properly express the love, gratitude, and admiration I have for them. 1 Abstract Loyalty reward programs (LRPs), initially developed as marketing programs to enhance customer retention, have now become an important part of customer-focused business strategies. One of the operational challenges faced by LRP managers is that of planning for the supply of rewards in a given period of time. We have developed three mathematical models for solving this problem under various settings. In each setting, the problem has been formulated as a two-stage stochastic linear programming model with recourse. A heuristic optimization procedure based on sample average approximation (SAA) is proposed for solving each of these models. We carried out extensive computational experiments to demonstrate the viability of the modeling and solution approaches for solving realistically sized (large-scale) problems as well as to evaluate the impacts of changes that internal dynamics and external uncertainties have on the performance of a loyalty reward program operating as a profit center. Findings from these computational studies have led to a number of managerial insights. Our results show that demand variability has negative impacts on LRP performance. As such, adopting an option contract provides good means for mitigation, especially when demand uncertainty is high. Our results have also shown that offering cooperative advertisement through bonus points is a double-edged sword. It may bring in higher LRP profitability, but it also results in higher liability. When demand variability is high, offering bonus points is not preferred in rewards-supply planning. Finally, our results indicate that budget tightness and liability control tightness have an impact on LRP performance to an extent that varies across different system settings. This research contributes to the literature in several ways: it synthesizes and extends the concept of supply chain management in the context of LRPs and it enhances the understanding of LRPs and rewards-supply planning problems through quantitative modeling and stochastic programming.     The Loyalty Trap 2017 | Stephen Shaw Ever since reward programs first became popular over fifty years ago, marketers have been trapped into thinking that customer loyalty can be bought. But customers today are looking for more than just rewards – they want to be treated honestly and fairly. She jokingly refers to it as her “hobby”. Every weekend, before heading out to shop, she scans the grocery and drug store flyers in search of deals. But she’s not looking for ordinary coupons and discounts – she’s searching for Air Miles offers. She is an avid points collector, hooked on earning miles, and loves to play the loyalty game: taking advantage of bonus miles and special promotions, just so she can cash them in for free trips. A typical calculation might go something like this: “Robaxacet Platinum gets me 10 miles for buying two. But that’s still pretty expensive. If I wait for the drug store’s standard deal – spend a total of $50 to get 100 miles – am I further ahead?” She works diligently at collecting those miles – so diligently in fact that when Air Miles occasionally bungles a transaction by failing to award her the right number of miles, she’s instantly on the phone to them, The coalition program Air Miles demanding a correction. (TSX: AIM), the data-driven marketing and loyalty analytics company, announced today that it has sold the Air Miles Trademarks for Canada to Diversified Royalty Corp. (TSX: DIV). Aimia transfers the Air Miles Trademarks, license and royalty agreements for Canada to Diversified Royalty Corp. for a cash consideration of approximately $53.75 million. An additional contingent consideration, up to a maximum of approximately $13.75 million, may be paid within the next three years, based on the performance of the program. Aimia expects to pay cash taxes related to the sale of these trademarks in 2018 of between $13 million and $16 million. Annual license fee revenue generated from the trademarks being sold has historically represented approximately $8.5 million on average. As one of the foremost thought leaders in the brand loyalty industry, Bond Brand Loyalty has developed this report in order to help loyalty owners, operators and their partners better understand the implications of the amendment to the Act. In our opinion, there are several challenges with the way the amendment to the Act was written, which will create new and unwanted consequences for both businesses and consumers if left unchanged. This report will describe the key issues that we have unearthed, and we advocate that businesses closely examine the amendment to the Act with their legal, financial and strategy teams to draw their own conclusions. BACKGROUND Points expiry in the Canadian marketplace has existed ever since loyalty programs began issuing points to Members as a currency. Points are generally expired by loyalty program owners/ operators under several circumstances including Members who are inactive for a defined period, the passage of time alone, and/or in the event that a program owner decides to close down their loyalty program. Such points expiry polices are contained in the terms and conditions of loyalty programs.
