The Installation of Canons
Lincoln Cathedral CHORAL EVENSONG with the Installation of Canons Sunday 2nd May 2021 3.45pm Welcome to Lincoln Cathedral We are delighted to welcome you to Lincoln Cathedral for the installation of new canons, and the welcome of new members of the cathedral’s governing Chapter. A particular welcome to family, friends and congregation who have come to support those being installed today. Earlier this week the canons designate made the Declaration of Assent and swore the Oaths of Allegiance, and the Bishop of Lincoln collated them as canons of the cathedral. We gather now for their installation. Much of this afternoon’s service is sung by the choir and follows a set pattern which is offered daily in the cathedral. Its essence is praise: words, inspired by God, used to worship him and lift our minds and hearts. The singing of psalms and the reading from the Old Testament unite us with our spiritual ancestors, the Jews, and with Jesus Christ, who himself used them to praise God. Our meditation on the word of God leads us to Jesus who is the Word made flesh, and so the Magnificat - a song of praise first sung by Mary, the mother of Jesus - acts as a pivot, pointing us to the new relationship with God which is brought about in the birth of Christ. The remainder of the service celebrates that ‘new covenant’ and, in the intercessions, commits us to the life of service to which Christians are called. If the service is new to you, we hope that in the prayerful combination of words, music and silence you will find space for meaningful reflection. -

Revd Prebendary Dr Brian Leathard, MA Introducing Revd Brian Leathard Revd Leathard was born on 2nd May, 1956 and attended the Judd School, Tonbridge, Kent, from 1967 to 1974. He and Ramani met while undergraduates at the University of Sussex. He read European Studies from 1974 to 1978 and Ramani, who came from Sri Lanka, read Economics in the School of African and Asian Studies, a background which prepared her well for her employment with Christian Aid. Between 1976 and 1977 Revd Leathard taught in the University of Bonn, West Germany, before returning to Cambridge from 1979 to 1982 to read Theology & Religious Studies at Selwyn College and prepare for Ordination at Westcott House and indeed to marry. Revd Brian Leathard Revd Leathard and his wife returned to Sussex to the parish of Seaford where he served his title for three years, as Assistant Curate, St Leonard, Seaford, Diocese of Chichester from 1982 to 1985. A daughter, Anusha, was born in Seaford on 12th May 1983. He was ordained Deacon of Petertide at Chichester Cathedral in 1982 and Priest at St. Saviour, Eastbourne in 1983. The family moved to the midland Diocese of Leicester, where from 1985 to 1989 he was Senior Anglican Chaplain, Loughborough University & Colleges, Diocese of Leicester - three Institutions with a population of about 15,000. While in Loughborough Ramani completed a Masters degree and Brian continued with his doctorate. The family enjoy music, food and travelling, value spending time together and enjoy meeting people. Revd Leathard obtained his PhD from Loughborough University in 1991. He became Director of Ordinands for the Kensington Episcopal Area of the Diocese of London, responsible for the discernment, selection, training and placement of those who felt they may have a vocation to ordained ministry in the Church of England. -

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CATHOLICITY OF ALPHA The following article addresses frequently asked questions about the Catholicity of the Alpha course. Among these, some have asked, “Why is the Diocese of Green Bay using the Alpha course when Alpha did not originate in the Catholic Church?” In this document are four questions and answers to be aware of on how the Alpha course can support our discipleship efforts in the Catholic Church. Recall that the four step discipleship process in the Diocese of Green Bay is as follows: 1. Discover Jesus. 2 Follow Jesus. 3. Worship Jesus. Share Jesus. These questions are detailed below. Page 1: Did Alpha originate in the Catholic Church? Page 2: If the Catholic Church teaches that the Church of Christ exists fully only in the Catholic Church (Dominus Iesus, no. 14), then why is the Diocese of Green Bay using a non-Catholic resource? Page 3: Why is there an “Alpha in a Catholic Context”? What gaps does the “Catholic context” part of Alpha address? Page 4: Are members of the Catholic hierarchy and other key Catholic leaders endorsing Alpha? 1. Did Alpha originate in the Catholic Church? Alpha was founded in 1977 by Reverend Charles Marnham at Holy Trinity Brompton, an Anglican parish in London. However, Nicky Gumbel, an Anglican priest, oversaw the development and expansion of the Alpha course starting from the 1980’s to the present day. However, it sometimes takes an “outsider” to show us “insiders” how wise the Catholic Church is in her teachings. Incidentally, what Nicky Gumbel effectively integrated into the Alpha course are several discipleship principles and practices as taught by the Catholic Church. -

Alpha: Another Road To Rome? Commentary by Roger Oakland www.understandthetimes.org The Alpha program, founded by Nicky Gumbel, a former Oxford educated barrister-turned-Anglican priest has become very popular in North America. A brochure published for the Alpha Texas Conference in Austin, Texas, scheduled for January 8th and 9th, 1998 detailed the goals and objectives of the course. It stated: The Alpha Course is a ten-week practical introduction to the Christian faith. It is designed primarily for non-church goers and those who have recently become Christians. Alpha is a flexible and practical model that can work for a group of any size. Churches and Christian organizations of every background and denomination are discovering it to be a simple and effective way of presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ in a non- threatening manner for people of all walks of life.[1] Charisma, December 1999, also contained an article that provided additional information about the Alpha program and how it is being promoted and marketed. The article, written by journalist Clive Price titled “Alpha Course Supporters Urge British To Party With God On New Year’s Eve” was introduced the following way: Lying on a bed of nails? That does not sound like the most orthodox way of spearheading a $1.6 million evangelistic media campaign for the closing days of the twentieth century. But as British pastor Sandy Miller puts it, the aim of the Alpha Project’s millennium initiative is to help people “get the point” of the year 2000.[2] Although Nicky Gumbel’s Alpha course was founded at Holy Trinity Brompton in 1991, the effectiveness of the course was not realized until a few years later after the “Toronto Blessing” was transported to England from Canada in May of 1994. -

TORR MANY years ago I published in Volume LVII of Archceologia Cantiana an account of a journey through Kent in 1723, which was copied from the version printed by the Historical MSS. Commission, and wherein are contained various interesting references to bygone Rochester. The long series of these closely-printed volumes comprises all sorts of items of local significance, but it is feared that they are lost to most people, by reason of the few public libraries which possess them. I now revert to the same source to set down in these pages the Kentish portions of documents of great historic importance, the metropolitical visitation of his province undertaken by Archbishop Laud, soon after his translation from London to Canterbury in 1633. I shall take Rochester first and Canterbury second, with warning to the reader that both reports affect only the cathedral establishments and not the respective dioceses. This valuable series is not complete for the province of Canterbury. There is nothing for the following sees, although it is known that their cathedrals were actually visited, the records not however included by Hit. MSS. Corn.: Chichester, Ely, Lincoln, Oxford, and Winchester (undated); and Hereford and the four in Wales, probably in 1635 or 1636. St. Paul's was left until 1636, and duly appears in H.M.C. In 1634 were taken Canterbury, Rochester, Sarum, Bristol, Wells, and Exeter, each with both injunctions and reports. -

Generous Orthodoxy - Doing Theology in the Spirit When St Mellitus began back in 2007, a Memorandum of Intent was drawn up outlining the agreement for the new College. It included the following paragraph: “The Bishops and Dean of St Mellitus will ensure that the College provides training that represents a generous Christian orthodoxy and that trains ordinands in such a way that all mainstream traditions of the Church have proper recognition and provision within the training.” That statement reflected a series of conversations that happened at the early stages of the project, and the desire from everyone involved that this new college would try in some measure to break the mould of past theological training. Most of us who had trained at residential colleges in the past had trained in party colleges which did have the benefit of strengthening the identity of the different rich traditions of the church in England but also the disadvantage of often reinforcing unhelpful stereotypes and suspicion of other groups and traditions within the church. I remember discussing how we would describe this new form of association. It was Simon Downham, the vicar of St Paul’s Hammersmith who came up with the idea of calling it a “Generous Orthodoxy”, and so the term was introduced that has become so pivotal to the identity of the College ever since. Of course, Simon was not the first to use the phrase. It was perhaps best known as the title of a book published in 2004 by Brian McLaren, a book which was fairly controversial at the time. -

Prayer Pilgrimage This month the Benefice of Dorchester with the Winterbournes looks forward to the arrival of new Team Rector of Dorchester, Revd Canon Thomas Woodhouse. He and his family will be formally welcomed at the service of Institution, Induction and Installation on Wednesday 26th February, 7pm in St Mary’s Church, Edward Road (where Thomas will be based). However, prior to that, he will be travelling the patch by way of a Prayer Pilgrimage to which all are invited in their particular context, or if more convenient to one of the other churches in the team.
