  • Calendar of Intercessions Michaelmas – Advent 2017
Calendar of Intercessions Michaelmas – Advent 2017 to this edition of the prayer diary, following the Feast St Michael and All Angels until the first Sunday of Advent. There are now two Rochester cycles of prayer – ‘parishes’ and ‘extra- Welcome parochial’. This is an attempt to be a little more even handed with the additional groups who are prayed for as the year turns, and to include our church schools in our prayers. As usual, it’s a sizable document but designed to be quick and clear to read, and also to leave space for your own notes. Of course, you do not have to print it all out at once, and you’re welcome to reformat it, if you wish (a Word version is available from my blog, see website below). Sunday entries are designed to look at some of the bigger pictures in our Diocese – sometimes geographical (deaneries, archdeaconries, link dioceses) sometimes issues or activities (Vocations Sunday). If there is an aspect of diocesan life that you’d like included on a Sunday, do let me know. These are followed through the week by daily prayers from all over the diocese, and across the Anglican Communion, including the calendar of saints and other worthy people. Finally, there is space in the daily entries for you to note any prayer requests that have been made to you or your parish, or any special interests you want to remember in your prayers. Please contact me with any comments or suggestions – [email protected] or 01634 814439. I will also be pleased to provide large print copies to any who would find that helpful.

  • Letter to Church Members (February 2021)
ST JAMES’ CHURCH RHOSDDU ST JOHN’S CHURCH, RHOSNESNI From the Revd Sarah Errington The Vicarage Priest-in-Charge 160 Borras Road Telephone: 01978 266018 WREXHAM e-mail: [email protected] LL13 9ER 10 February 2021 Hallo Everyone! Ash Wednesday and Lent I hope you are finding the weekly mailings helpful in your spiritual reflections and activities. Last week’s package included a sheet with a suggested service/activity for Ash Wednesday, which is next week, and marks the beginning of Lent and our preparations for Easter. I have considered doing a streamed service for Ash Wednesday, but in the end decided that I don’t have the capacity. The Mission Area leaflet attached gives details of online Ash Wednesday services in the Mission Area; or you might like to watch the service from St Asaph Cathedral at 7.00 pm on Wednesday, on the Cathedral Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/StAsaphCathedral/live/, or the Cathedral website: https://stasaphcathedral.wales/. Next week I will be sending out two resources which you might like to use through the weeks of Lent. The first is called A Journey Through Mark’s Gospel, and provides a number of readings and reflections for each week of Lent. The second is called Baking Through Lent, and focusses on the Sunday gospel reading for each week; it provides a recipe which is linked to the reading, which you might like to bake. If you do that, and you have the opportunity before your food is scoffed (!), it would be fantastic to share some photos of what you’ve baked! You can either post them on our Facebook page/group, or send them to me by email, and I’ll post them for you.

The historical documents are few, and the surviving evidence of the past with regard to our smallest cathedral is scanty at the best. The chief books of reference have been Browne Willis's valuable "Survey of St. Asaph,'' published in 1720, also Edwards' edition of the same published at Wrexham in 1801, and the learned work by the Ven. Archdeacon Thomas, M.A., F.S.A., on " The Diocese of St. Asaph." " Storer's Cathedrals," pub- lished in i8ig, together with similar works, have also been consulted.

  • Railway and Canal Historical Society Early Railway Group
RAILWAY AND CANAL HISTORICAL SOCIETY EARLY RAILWAY GROUP Occasional Paper 251 BENJAMIN HALL’S TRAMROADS AND THE PROMOTION OF CHAPMAN’S LOCOMOTIVE PATENT Stephen Rowson, with comment from Andy Guy Stephen Rowson writes - Some year ago I had access to some correspondence originally in the Llanover Estate papers and made this note from within a letter by Benjamin Hall to his agent John Llewellin, dated 7 March 1815: Chapman the Engineer called on me today. He says one of their Engines will cost about £400 & 30 G[uinea]s per year for his Patent. He gave a bad account of the Collieries at Newcastle, that they do not clear 5 per cent. My original thoughts were of Chapman looking for business by hawking a working model of his locomotive around the tramroads of south Wales until I realised that Hall wrote the letter from London. So one assumes the meeting with William Chapman had taken place in the city rather than at Hall’s residence in Monmouthshire. No evidence has been found that any locomotive ran on Hall’s Road until many years later after it had been converted from a horse-reliant tramroad. Did any of Chapman’s locomotives work on south Wales’ tramroads? __________________________________ Andy Guy comments – This is a most interesting discovery which raises a number of issues. In 1801, Benjamin Hall, M.P. (1778-1817) married Charlotte, daughter of the owner of Cyfarthfa ironworks, Richard Crawshay, and was to gain very considerable industrial interests from his father- in-law.1 Hall’s agent, John Llewellin, is now better known now for his association with the Trevithick design for the Tram Engine, the earliest surviving image of a railway locomotive.2 1 Benjamin Hall was the son of Dr Benjamin Hall (1742–1825) Chancellor of the diocese of Llandaff, and father of Sir Benjamin Hall (1802-1867), industrialist and politician, supposedly the origin of the nickname ‘Big Ben’ for Parliament’s clock tower (his father was known as ‘Slender Ben’ in Westminster).

  • The Installation of Canons
Lincoln Cathedral CHORAL EVENSONG with the Installation of Canons Sunday 2nd May 2021 3.45pm Welcome to Lincoln Cathedral We are delighted to welcome you to Lincoln Cathedral for the installation of new canons, and the welcome of new members of the cathedral’s governing Chapter. A particular welcome to family, friends and congregation who have come to support those being installed today. Earlier this week the canons designate made the Declaration of Assent and swore the Oaths of Allegiance, and the Bishop of Lincoln collated them as canons of the cathedral. We gather now for their installation. Much of this afternoon’s service is sung by the choir and follows a set pattern which is offered daily in the cathedral. Its essence is praise: words, inspired by God, used to worship him and lift our minds and hearts. The singing of psalms and the reading from the Old Testament unite us with our spiritual ancestors, the Jews, and with Jesus Christ, who himself used them to praise God. Our meditation on the word of God leads us to Jesus who is the Word made flesh, and so the Magnificat - a song of praise first sung by Mary, the mother of Jesus - acts as a pivot, pointing us to the new relationship with God which is brought about in the birth of Christ. The remainder of the service celebrates that ‘new covenant’ and, in the intercessions, commits us to the life of service to which Christians are called. If the service is new to you, we hope that in the prayerful combination of words, music and silence you will find space for meaningful reflection.

  • Church in Wales Review July 2012
Church in Wales Review July 2012 The September 2010 meeting of the Governing Body was notable for the number of contributions from members with a common message: “The Church in Wales cannot go on doing the same things in the same way; some things need to change and we are open to – and indeed encourage – that possibility”. The Standing Committee and Bench of Bishops responded to this call by appointing an external review of the Church, with particular reference to its structures and use of resources, to increase the effectiveness of the Church’s ministry and witness. The Review Group’s members are prominent thinkers with a blend of experience in dealing with matters ecclesiastical and organisational: Lord Harries of Pentregarth, the former Bishop of Oxford; Professor Charles Handy, the eminent writer and adviser on business and organisational theory (and son of a Church of Ireland archdeacon); and Professor Patricia Peattie, former Convenor of the Scottish Episcopal Church’s Standing Committee and the first chairwoman of the Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust. The aim was to commission a review that could move quickly to gather and assimilate information about the state of the Church in Wales, then provide independent advice on how the Church might reshape itself to be more effective in the twenty-first century. Given the extent of its members’ other commitments, the Review Group has pursued its task with extraordinary vigour and dedication. The Group determined its own approach and programme. It has visited every diocese in Wales, meeting with the Bishop and Diocesan team in each and holding an open meeting for Church members to express their views.

He was born in 1930 in Cardiff, his father being a Pilot in the Bristol Channel, who represented the Pilots on the Cardiff Pilotage Authority, was a senior Mason and was active in the Baptist Church. Brian attended Marlborough Road School, where one of his masters was George Thomas, later Speaker of the House of Commons, and then Cardiff High School. He was brought up monolingual in English and though he learnt Welsh in later life, especially while at Lampeter, no writings in Welsh survive in the archive. He served his National Service with the Welch Regiment, based in Brecon and it was in Brecon Cathedral that his conversion to Anglicanism from his Baptist upbringing, begun as he accompanied his future wife to Church in Wales services, was completed. Anglicanism remained a constant part of his life: he became a Lay Reader when in Reading, was a passionate advocate of the Book of Common Prayer and a fierce critic of Series Three and the New English Bible, as epitomised in the book he edited in 1990, Ritual Murder .
