OFF Festival Katowice 2018 Ariel Pink Kuratorem OFF Festival Katowice 2018 Ariel Pink kuratorem Ariel Pink i ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead zapraszają nas w przeszłość, Wednesday Campanella, Housewives i Nanook of the North w przyszłość, a Or:La i Bass Astral x Igo – do tańca. …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead grają “Source Tags & Codes” „Source Tags and Codes wciągnie cię, rozszarpie na kawałki, poskłada w całość, wyliże do czysta twe rany i odeśle z powrotem w świat, z poczucie straty i nadziei zarazem. I już nigdy nie będziesz taki sam” – taka recenzja w serwisie Pitchfork (poparta kompletem punktów) towarzyszyła premierze trzeciej płyty ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead (2002). Nagrywając swój pierwszy duży album dla wytwórni Interscope Teksańczycy zdawali sobie sprawę z towarzyszących im oczekiwań i dzielnie stawili im czoła, przelewając w tę płytę wszystko, czego mógł się nauczyć gitarowy zespół w Ameryce lat 90. Znaleźli sobie własne miejsce, gdzieś pomiędzy melancholią The Smashing Pumpkins, brawurą Sonic Youth a wyobraźnią Mercury Rev. Nanook of the North Kompozytor i skrzypek Stefan Wesołowski, wybitny przedstawiciel nurtu neoclassical, zasłużenie chwalony za wydany w ubiegłym roku album „Rite of the End”. Miejsce piękne i zimne, przyciągające i niepokojące zarazem. Debiut Nanook of the North znajdziecie na listach najlepszych polskich płyt 2018 roku. This Heat i Einsturzende Neubauten doczekali się godnych, odważnych następców. Coraz rzadziej można ją tam spotkać, bo w ślad za tytułem „Breakthrough DJ of the year”, przyznanym jej przez „DJ Mag”, posypały się zaproszenia z całego świata. Podczas tegorocznej edycji OFF Festivalu wystąpią również wcześniej ogłoszeni: Grizzly Bear, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah z płytą „Some Loud Thunder”, Marlon Williams, John Maus, Big Freedia, Turbonegro, Egyptian Lover, Oxbow, Bishop Nehru, King Ayisoba, Jacques Greene, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Jon Hopkins Live, Hańba!, Furia, The Como Mamas, Coals, Moses Sumney, Aurora, Yasuaki Shimizu, Yellow Days, Legendarny Afrojax oraz Sorja Morja. OFF Festival Katowice 2018 odbędzie się w dniach 3-5 sierpnia, w Dolinie Trzech Stawów. Trzydniowe karnety w cenie 290 zł możecie już kupić w OFF Sklepie. .

  • WRCU 2/10 ROTATIONS RIYL = Recommended If You Like
WRCU 2/10 ROTATIONS RIYL = Recommended If You Like Alone, Omen 3 by King Krule RIYL: Cosmo Pyke, Ariel Pink The chameleonic singer-songwriter is gearing up for the February 21st release of his next album, Man Alive!, with single "Alone, Omen 3", which displays elements of both the stark, rough-shod post-punk of his first record, 6 Feet Beneath the Moon, and the more eclectic art pop leanings of his second, The OOZ. But "Alone, Omen 3" also hints at a new, psychedelically inclined direction for Marshall, featuring a more understated vocal performance and a woozy, meditative tone. By Colin Jones Run by Joji RIYL: James Blake, Rejjie Snow George Kusunoki Miller began his online career as Filthy Frank (a sketch comedy act), transitioned to Pink Guy (a comedy rapper), and finally realized his full musical form as Joji, the lo-fi hip hop artist inspired by Donald Glover and influenced by electronic and R&B music. On “Run,” a haunting, mysterious electric guitar snakes its way through the song supported by heartbreaking lyrics. Imagine you’re driving along a coastal highway, top-down, feeling the wind, letting the song’s words wash over you, and thinking of your last great love...all while wearing a bad-ass, black leather jacket. That’s what this song is like. By Chase Garvey-Daniels Shangri-La by EOB RIYL: Radiohead, The Postal Service Shangri-la is one of three singles released ahead of Radiohead frontman Edward O'Brien’s upcoming album, which will be called “Earth”. This is O’Brien’s debut album as a solo artist, marking the end of (or at least a break from) his 20+ years with Radiohead.

  • Critical Soundbites for Her Debut Album: „I Thought I Was an Alien
SOKO Critical Soundbites for her debut album: „I Thought I Was An Alien‟ Out now via Community Music “SOKO captivates with her unique mix of delicacy and intensity.” --Beto Vargas, MTV (7/17/13) “Her music is deceptively sophisticated. Beneath the neu-folk veneer of her debut album, I Thought I Was an Alien, lies lush beds of texture rife with swelling strings, pulsating synthetic drum beats, and reverb-soaked keyboards. There‟s also an undercurrent of melancholia running through the fourteen tracks.” --Evelyn Crowley, VOGUE (6/12/13) “Touching and strangely beautiful.” --Simmy Richman, THE INDEPENDENT (U.K.) “Singer-songwriter SOKO crafts impossibly fragile music. This is most apparent in her live performances. Her guitar-playing coats the rhythm of her songs like honey, carefully avoiding the pulse, giving her music the wooziness of Mazzy Star. She modulates her voice between a gingerly sing-song and a forlorn crackle. This isn‟t to say that her frailty is a put-on, but rather that there is a logic to the way she channels art out of her vulnerable heart.” --Alexis Stephens-MTV (7/17/13) “…humble yet pretty bedroom pop…” --Chris Martins, SPIN (6/28) “SOKO describes herself as a musician first and an actress second. Her debut album, I Thought I Was An Alien (Community Music), on which she plays many of the instruments, has generated acclaim in France and is being released in the U.S. on June 11. It‟s the kind of fragile-yet-forthright, highly personal statement one might associate with Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power) but with a dash of

MUSC 499: The Music Video: From Popular Music to Film and Digital Media University of Southern California, Spring 2014 Wednesdays, 6:00pm-9pm THH 202 Instructor: Dr. Richard Brown [email protected] www.richardhbrownjr.com Course Description: Since its emergence in the late 1970s, the music video has become the dominant means of advertising popular music and musicians, as well as one of the most influential multimedia genres in history. Music videos have affected aesthetic style in a wide range of film and television genres, introducing experimental and avant-garde techniques to a mass audience. Because most music videos last only a few minutes, it is difficult to make sense of their often-conflicting images, sounds, and messages. This course challenges participants to read music videos as texts by engaging with their visual and auditory materials. We will explore how the gender, race, and class of video participants shapes meaning, as well as how pacing and editing contribute to (or detract from) a narrative flow. We will also consider the music video in relation to notions of stardom and celebrity, and will speculate on the future of the music video amid drastic changes in the production and marketing of media. The second portion of the course applies these analytical skills to a wide variety of media, including video games, live concert films, film and television music placements, television title sequences and end credits, user generated content, YouTube, remixes and more. Course Materials: There is one required textbook available for free via USC’s electronic Ebook access: Carol Vernallis’ Experiencing Music Video: Aesthetics and Cultural Context (New York: Columbia University Press, 2004).

  • OFF Festival Katowice 2018 Ariel Pink's Uncanny Guests
OFF Festival Katowice 2018 Ariel Pink’s Uncanny Guests Wojciech Bąkowski, Sensations Fix, Harry Merry, Gary War and coL are a motley crew even by OFF standards. See them perform at the Experimental Stage when Ariel Pink takes over as curator for one day. Our thanks to Ariel for this musical adventure! Wojciech Bąkowski You’ve definitely heard of this guy. While Bąkowski is more popular nowadays as a visual artist, especially after the dissolution of the duo Niwea, he’s still very much a musician. On Kształt, Telegaz and Duchy kotów he reveals himself to be an explorer who never reaches his goal, branching out and eschewing stylistic self-determination, and avoiding narrative structures, refusing to give a foothold to a broader audience. He speaks or stays silent. He can be lyrical or repulsive. He is elusive. And the more elusive he gets, the more you want to follow him. Sensations’ Fix A forgotten gem of the Italian prog-rock scene. Franco Falsini traveled across Europe and the United States in the 1960s in search of inspiration, and eventually returned to Florence, where he recorded a handful of albums that would achieve cult status upon their reissue at the start of the present decade. The reemergence of these long-coveted recordings sparked a resurgent interest the band’s dreamy variety of prog rock, one heavily steeped in electronic sounds, and Sensations’ Fix came back as a live act. Harry Merry This artist claims to take inspiration from rock’n’roll and blues as well as schlager music and French chansons, Slovenian pop and Serbian turbo folk.
