At this point I’m proud to have forgotten how many times this essay has appeared. It was ini- tially presented as the inaugural “Bob Marley Lecture” for the opening of the Institute of Car- ibbean Studies’ Reggae Studies Unit at the University of the West Indies, in Kingston Jamaica in 1997 but has taken on a life of its own as many of its insights and declarations have been found to be continually valid as electronic music has grown and sound studies has itself be- come a formal discipline.
