Five for Fighting Bell Biv Devoe NEIL SEDAKA • August 3 • 7:00 pm inger. Songwriter. Composer. Pianist. Author. These are just a few of the titles that describe NEIL SEDAKA. Classically trained at Juilliard, his impressive sixty-year career ranges from being one of the Sfirst teen pop sensations of the 50s, a tunesmith for himself and other artists in the 60s, a 70s superstar as well as a current constant force in writing and performing. Sedaka recorded favorite chart toppers “The Diary,” “Oh! Carol,” “Stairway to Heaven,” “Calendar Girl,” “Little Devil,” “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen,” “Next Door To An Angel,” and “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.” Neil has written hit songs for artists including Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, The Monkees, The Fifth Dimension, and Captain and Tennille. Always looking to challenge himself as a composer, he has returned to his classical roots, composing his first symphony, “Joie De Vivre”, and his first piano concerto, “Manhattan Intermezzo.” Neil recorded these two pieces with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London at Air Studios in London. “Manhattan Intermezzo” was released on 2013’s The Real Neil. “Joie De Vivre” was released on 2016’s I Do It For Applause. The accolades showered on Neil Sedaka have been numerous in his over six decade career. Where once Hip Hop was borrowing from R&B, here the tables were turned, and for good reason : Bell Biv DeVoe weren’t making your typical New Jack Swing of the day, the music sounded closer to a Public Enemy or Ice Cube album. This wasn’t your parent’s R&B. With help from Public Enemy producers Eric Sadler, Hank and Keith Shocklee, and several others, Bell Biv Devoe had crafted their debut album Poison which went number 1 on Billboard's R&B/HipHop chart. Murderous cleansing is modern – it is “the dark side of democracy.” It results where the demos (democracy) is confused with the ethnos (the ethnic group). Danger arises where two rival ethnonational movements each claims “its own” state over the same territory. Conflict esca- lates where either the weaker side fights rather than submit because of aid from outside or the stronger side believes it can deploy sudden, overwhelming force. But the state must also be factionalized and radicalized by external pressures like wars. Premeditation is rare, since perpetrators feel “forced” into escalation when their milder plans are frustrated. Escalation is not simply the work of “evil elites” or “primitive peoples.” It results from complex interactions among leaders, militants, and “core constituencies” of ethnonationalism. Understand- ing this complex process helps us devise policies to avoid ethnic cleansing in the future. Michael Mann is a professor of sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles.
