  • Bad Girls: Agency, Revenge, and Redemption in Contemporary Drama
e Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy Bad Girls: Agency, Revenge, and Redemption in Contemporary Drama Courtney Watson, Ph.D. Radford University Roanoke, Virginia, United States [email protected] ABSTRACT Cultural movements including #TimesUp and #MeToo have contributed momentum to the demand for and development of smart, justified female criminal characters in contemporary television drama. These women are representations of shifting power dynamics, and they possess agency as they channel their desires and fury into success, redemption, and revenge. Building on works including Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, dramas produced since 2016—including The Handmaid’s Tale, Ozark, and Killing Eve—have featured the rise of women who use rule-breaking, rebellion, and crime to enact positive change. Keywords: #TimesUp, #MeToo, crime, television, drama, power, Margaret Atwood, revenge, Gone Girl, Orange is the New Black, The Handmaid’s Tale, Ozark, Killing Eve Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy 37 Watson From the recent popularity of the anti-heroine in novels and films like Gone Girl to the treatment of complicit women and crime-as-rebellion in Hulu’s adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale to the cultural watershed moments of the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements, there has been a groundswell of support for women seeking justice both within and outside the law. Behavior that once may have been dismissed as madness or instability—Beyoncé laughing wildly while swinging a baseball bat in her revenge-fantasy music video “Hold Up” in the wake of Jay-Z’s indiscretions comes to mind—can be examined with new understanding.

  • 2021 Spring/Summer Series
Dear Patrons, Welcome back to live events at the Bologna Performing Arts Center! We are excited to have artists returning to our stage, and look forward to inviting you to attend shows again. Things will be a little different this spring and summer. Due to the ongoing nature of the pandemic, we are going to put each show on sale individually, about 4-6 weeks before each event. This allows us to make sure we are following the most recent executive orders, including audience capacity guidelines. Please refer to the on-sale dates for each artist in this brochure. Seating has been reduced for our Spring/Summer Series, and is being sold in staggered pairs and groups. We ask that you purchase all of the seats in the grouping to ensure that patrons are comfortable being seated together. At this time, all patrons are required to wear masks during their visit to the Bologna Performing Arts Center. All of our staff and volunteers will also wear masks, and do daily temperature checks and symptom monitoring. We ask you to please monitor your own health, and stay home if you do not feel well. We have also increased our cleaning and sanitation regimens. We have invested in new cleaning systems to ensure that the theater is totally sanitized prior to every performance. We encourage you to call us at 662-846-4625 or visit our website www.bolognapac.com for the latest health and safety operating guidelines prior to your visit. We are eager to resume presenting live events with this Spring/Summer Series.

  • Impulse Songlist
west coast music Impulse SPECIAL/PROTOCOL DANCES: Please note that we will need to have your special dance requests (i.e. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, etc) FOUR WEEKS prior to your event so that we can confirm the band will be able to perform the song(s) and so that we have enough time to locate sheet music and an audio sample of the song. In cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is needed, this gives us time to properly prepare the music. General song requests are not required, as many of our clients simply ask that the band read & react based on their guest's dance response. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs or artists they like and want played or avoided. If you wish to maintain the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested) we would ask for a minimum of 80 requests from the band’s songlist. 'LOW ROTATION' REQUESTS: General requests chosen from the 'Low Rotation' section of this songlist (pages 7-12) must be submitted at least FOUR WEEKS prior to your event. The songs from the 'Low Rotation' section are not in the current ‘IMPULSE’ song rotation, so the band would need extra preparation time. • WATCHMOJO – the Life and Career of David Bowie (1947-2016)
WATCHMOJO – The life and career of David Bowie (1947-2016) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lan_wotkon0 [Fashion] Welcome to watchmojo.com and today we're taking a look at the life and career of David Bowie. [Queen Bitch] David Robert Jones was born on January 8 1947 in Brixton London England. Though he showed musical interest at a young age it was only in the early 60s that he really pursued the art. He started by joining several blues bands but branched off on his own when they had little success. Renaming himself David Bowie he released his self-titled debut in 1967. [Who's that hiding in the apple tree clinging to a branch] Its lack of success led Bowie to participate in a promotional film called Love you till Tuesday which showcased several of his songs. A particular interest was Space Oddity : that track became a hit after it was released at the same time as the first moon landing. [Ground control to Major Tom] His sophomore effort of the same name however was another commercial disappointment. [The man who sold the world] To promote his third album The man who sold the world, Bowie was put in a dress to capitalize on his androgynous look. [Life on mars] [Ziggy Stardust] In 1971 a pop influenced record called Hunky-Dory came out and was followed by the creation of his flamboyant Ziggy Stardust persona and stage show with backing band The Spiders from Mars. Then came his breakthrough record The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars which climbed the charts thanks to his performance of the single Star Man on Top of the Pops.

The consequence of these two expectations of contrasting values results in stress for everyone involved. Hmong parents are stressed from not having a secure hold on their children in a foreign environment, with no guarantee that their children will follow a “traditional” route. Hmong American men are stressed from growing up in a home environment that grooms them to be a focal point of familial attention based on gender, with the expectation that they will eventually be responsible for an entire family; meanwhile, they are living in this American national environment that stresses that the ideal is that gender is irrelevant in the modern world. Hmong American women are stressed and in turn hold feelings of resentment that they are expected to adhere to traditional familial roles by their parents in addition to following a path to financial success the same as men.

  • Appendix 2-2 1 ISSUE ID COMMENT NO
KLAMATH RIVER BASIN FISHERIES TASK FORCE MIDTERM EVALUATION INTERVIEW RESPONSES1 ISSUE ID COMMENT NO. I. WOULD THE SITUATION BE WORSE 3 Yes, would be worse without the Act and TF WITHOUT THE ACT AND TASK FORCE? Only have $1 million per year to address a huge basin with all kinds of problems The fact that came up with a plan at all, generated with citizen input, with the TF guiding the pen of the author, is a huge success But a plan is only as good as it its implementation 7 Probably would be worse without the Act and TF. At least TF does get interests to the table. If not talking would be suing. Does serve as a forum, attaches faces to names, become better educated on opposing issues. Members don’t agree on a range of issues, but the forum has merit. 13 Act has helped some; would be worse off without it. Provides a starting point, brings information to the table. Failure is weak stock management under current system. Listing was the only alternative. 14 No, the situation would not be worse without the TF. If TF weren’t there we wouldn’t miss it. There is a better way to address fisheries problems than putting the money into the political arena. Should spend the money on the fish. Is not proud of the way the TF is operating. Are not addressing the real problems from Iron Gate to the Pacific. Fish problems are also affected by the “black box” of processes in the Pacific, harvests in the ocean, Native American harvest and Trinity diversion, which the TF cannot or will not address.
