Brief Description of Project
Detailed Background on Existing Resource Conditions in Project/Study Area Giacomini Wetland Restoration Project Golden Gate National Recreation Area/ Point Reyes National Seashore Land Use: The Giacomini Ranch has been used for dairy farming since 1917. The Giacominis established their operation in the 1940s with diking of what is now referred to as the East and West Pastures and are still farming the ranch currently. The National Park Service’s reservation of use agreement with the Giacominis ends in 2007 at which the dairy operation will cease, and the entire 563 acres will be under the National Park Service (Park Service) ownership and management. Olema Marsh, which is directly south of the Giacomini Ranch in the Olema Valley, has been owned by the non-profit organization, Audubon Canyon Ranch. The marsh is primarily used by the public for walking, birding, and sightseeing opportunities. The West Marin area, including Point Reyes National Seashore (Seashore) and north district of Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), is largely rural and comprised of agricultural operations and small residential communities. The dominant type of agriculture within the region is dairy and beef cattle operations. South of Olema Marsh lies pasturelands that are owned by the Park Service and grazed under lease by beef cattle. Leased beef cattle grazing also occurs near Park Service land at Railroad Point northeast of the Giacomini Ranch. Otherwise, most of the Giacomini Ranch and Olema Marsh is surrounded by the towns of Point Reyes Station and Inverness Park, which consist largely of residential homes and small businesses. To the north of Giacomini Ranch lies undiked marshlands that are owned by the State Lands Commission. -

We ask that the County exempt and/or delay implementation of any changes to Chapters 22.33 and 22.63 as to the city-centered corridor streams, including Sleepy Hollow. The SHHA supports implementation of the proposed amendments to the San Geronimo Valley, to protect wildlife habitat in streams where Coho Salmon currently exist. The SHHA supports regulations to ensure the health and survival of the species in these areas. The SHHA recognizes the urgency of this matter to the San Geronimo Valley, both for the survival of the endangered and declining Coho population and for the property rights of the affected residents who are currently subject to a building moratorium. -

A section of 6.10 m through the Deurne Sand Member (Diest Formation, Late Miocene) in Antwerpen (Antwerp) is described, which has been observed during the construction works of a new hospital building in the southern part of Deurne, and here called “Middelares Hospital Section” after that location. This temporary outcrop section can well be correlated with a similar one which was outcropping some 35 years ago, and was located at some 1.5 km to the NE. It was studied in detail by De Meuter et al. (1967), who called it the “Borgerhout-Rivierenhof VII B.R.” section. Since that section was the most relevant of the previously described sections in the Deurne Sand Member, it is here suggested to designate that section as stratotype for the member. -

Lankins Senior Seminar Paper June 3, 2009 2 Eighty six years after Spain had claimed the New World for themselves an English Privateer by the name of Francis Drake was becoming a thorn in their side. Called El Draque by the Spaniards, they hated to see him in their ports. His enthusiasm for damaging Spain overseas may have arisen from a hatred by Protestants of Catholics in Elizabethan England, or from his voyage to Nombre de Dios in 1572 where he lost two brothers, John and Joeseph1. After years of terrorizing the Spanish in the Caribbean, in 1577 Drake left England for the South Sea, now known as the Pacific Ocean. It is unclear as to the exact reason for the voyage. -

Erin E Maxwell1* and Laura AB Wilson2 Abstract Background: A long, slender body plan characterized by an elongate antorbital region and posterior displacement of the unpaired fins has evolved multiple times within ray-finned fishes, and is associated with ambush predation. The axial skeleton of ray-finned fishes is divided into abdominal and caudal regions, considered to be evolutionary modules. In this study, we test whether the convergent evolution of the ambush predator body plan is associated with predictable, regional changes in the axial skeleton, specifically whether the abdominal region is preferentially lengthened relative to the caudal region through the addition of vertebrae. We test this hypothesis in seven clades showing convergent evolution of this body plan, examining abdominal and caudal vertebral counts in over 300 living and fossil species. In four of these clades, we also examined the relationship between the fineness ratio and vertebral regionalization using phylogenetic independent contrasts. Results: We report that in five of the clades surveyed, Lepisosteidae, Esocidae, Belonidae, Sphyraenidae and Fistulariidae, vertebrae are added preferentially to the abdominal region. In Lepisosteidae, Esocidae, and Belonidae, increasing abdominal vertebral count was also significantly related to increasing fineness ratio, a measure of elongation. Two clades did not preferentially add abdominal vertebrae: Saurichthyidae and Aulostomidae. Both of these groups show the development of a novel caudal region anterior to the insertion of the anal fin, morphologically differentiated from more posterior caudal vertebrae.
