The winner of four Tony Awards, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC explores the tangled web of affairs centered around actress Desiree Armfeldt and the men who love her. Desiree is involved with the buffoonish Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm, husband of the cynical and wryly comedic Countess Charlotte Malcolm. But when Desiree spots her old flame Fredrik in the audience of her most recent production, her interest in him is immediately rekindled. Fredrik, however, has recently married the virginal 18-year old Anne, with whom Fredrik’s son, the melancholy academic Henrik, has fallen in love. All parties meet for a “Weekend in the Country” at Desiree’s mother, Madame Armfeldt’s, estate, where the tangled web of romantic involvements continues to surprise us with its twists and turns. Featuring the classic, Grammy Award-winning song “Send in the Clowns” and a beautiful, lush score, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC is a story of love, nostalgia, regret, and the magic of music on a summer’s night. THE PRODUCTION “Productions of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC are usually grand and lush,” says director Linda Fortunato, “but I’m interested in a more intimate version, one which focuses on the characters.” BoHo’s production, its first at the Greenhouse Theater Center in Lincoln Park, will forego the usual orchestra pit and feature the production’s musicians onstage as integral tellers of the story. “The entire musical is variations on the waltz,” music director Tom Vendafreddo explains. “It’s all theme and variation, which echoes the love triangles in the story. Everything is threes. Even in songs that only feature two singers, they are always talking about a third person.” Linda Fortunato (director) returns to BoHo where she directed NEXT TO NORMAL, PARADE (Jeff Nomination) and choreographed KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN (Jeff Award). Linda is the Artistic Director of Theatre at the Center where her credits include directing CABARET, BIG RIVER, THE TIN WOMAN, STEEL MAGNOLIAS; choreographing 42ND STREET (Jeff Award), SPAMALOT, BIG FISH, CRAZY FOR YOU (Jeff Nomination); and a dozen other productions as director, choreographer, or actor. Choreography credits include Marriott Theatre, Drury Lane Oakbrook, American Players Theatre, TimeLine Theatre, Writers’ Theatre, Peninsula Players, Provision Theatre, Remy Bumppo, and many Chicago-area high schools and colleges. Four world premiere plays and two new adaptations seen first by Chicago audiences were among those receiving Jeff nominations by the Jeff Awards Committee. There are 179 nominations in 35 categories for Chicago Equity theatrical productions that opened between August 1, 2013 and July 31, 2014. In the Large Theatre category, Goodman Theatre's "Brigadoon" and Drury Lane Production's "LES MISERABLES" each garnered nine nominations. Goodman's "Brigadoon" was nominated for Production Musical-Large, Director and Choreographer Rachel Rockwell as well as acting and design awards. Running September 27th through October 27th, the play is a rarely-produced work from the acclaimed author of the novels Rosemary’s Baby, The Stepford Wives, and A Kiss Before Dying, as well as Deathtrap, which holds the record for Broadway’s longest running mystery play. Veronica’s Room represents the Bohemian Pillar of Freedom in BoHo’s 2013/2014 Season. THE PLAY “[Ira Levin] is the Swiss watchmaker of the suspense novel… he makes what the rest of us do look like those five-dollar watches you can buy in the discount drugstores.” -Stephen King, Danse Macabre This intimate thriller explores the thin line between fantasy and reality, and the lengths one is willing to go to find absolution. Students Susan and Larry find themselves enticed to an old New England mansion by its elderly caretakers in order to meet Cissie, the sole surviving member of the mansion’s family. They insist that Susan bears a striking resemblance to Cissie’s long-dead sister, Veronica. If Susan will agree to briefly impersonate Veronica, they believe it will comfort the dementia-afflicted Cissie and allow her to die in peace. But what begins as a simple errand of mercy quickly spirals into a nightmare cycle of guilt, sacrifice, and murder.

From joy to heartache and every feeling in between, Chicago theatre tells stories that evoke big emotions. Stories that take risks, inspire awe, ask tough questions – and dare audiences to do the same. From musicals to plays to comedy, theatre is for everyone in Chicago. Chicago Theatre Week is a celebration of the stories we share. Chicago Theatre Week, spanning a week and two full weekends, is heading into its eighth year. As a program of the League of Chicago Theatres, in partnership with Choose Chicago, over 100 theatre productions are expected to participate in neighborhoods throughout the city and suburbs.
