I am so proud to kick off BoHo’s 15th anni- versary season – and our first as the resident theatre at Lincoln Park’s Greenhouse Theater Center – with BRIGHT STAR. At BoHo, we tell stories – bold, intimate and insight- ful ones that examine and celebrate human relationships – and Bright Star, written and composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, masterfully captures our storytelling mission. It’s a gem of a musical, a mystery based on a true tale of a baby, tagged the “Iron Mountain Baby,” thrown from a train, rescued and cared for by strangers right after World War II in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Martin and Brickell have deftly whittled away everything inessential to the story and songs, leaving a spare but direct narrative that magnifies the emotional impact. I promise that their rich, haunting brew of Americana, bluegrass and nostalgia will get under your skin and into your soul. I was specifically drawn to BRIGHT STAR by several persuasive ingredients: the heartbreaking and heartwarming story of love, loss, forgiveness and redemption propelled by a strong female lead, an ensemble of incredible talent and the chal- lenging and thrilling score. Plus, an incredible creative team – led by the perfect director for this musical, the incomparable Ericka Mac – who has excelled at telling this story in true BoHo fashion: stripped down, honest and replete with imagination and heart. I hope you will take BoHo’s full journey with us this season, which also will include Jez Butterworth’s haunting and complex new play THE RIVER; and BIG FISH, a truly magical musical about fathers, sons and the stories we create that define our iden- tities, with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and book by John August. This is my first season as artistic director, and I treasure the opportunity to continue to enrich BoHo’s proud and deep tradition of delivering exceptional productions that bring you back again and again. We hope you enjoy this first step on our 2019 journey. And we hope you will consider getting more involved with BoHo during this 15th anniversary celebration year and those ahead. I look forward to seeing you at the theater!
