The Asian Indian Classical Music Society 52318 N Tally Ho Drive, South Bend, IN 46635 Indian Classical Music Concert Dr. Rajeeb Chakarborty (sarod) Reena Chakraborty Shrivastava (sitar) with Subhen Chatterjee (tabla) September 6, 2009, Sunday, 7.30PM Dr. Rajeeb Chakraborty and Reena Chakraborty Shrivastava, are two of India’s leading classical instrumental musicians. They started training with their father, the eminent Sarod player, Pandit Robi Chakraborty, from the ages of six and five. They belong to the famous Maihar Gharana (school or tradition of music), following the tradition of the great masters Ustad Allauddin Khan, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pandit Ravi Shankar. Both Rajeeb and Reena began performing publicly when they were nine years of age. As soloists, and sometimes together, they have participated in all the major music festivals in India, performed extensively in India, the US, Canada, and Western Europe, and have several musical recordings to their names. In Indian classical music, a “Gharana” or school refers to the adherence of a group of musicians to a particular musical style of performing a raga. The objective of this work was to find out if any characteristic acoustic cues exist which discriminates a particular gharana from the other. Another intriguing fact is if the artists of the same gharana keep their singing style unchanged over generations or evolution of music takes place like everything else in nature. In this work, we chose to study the similarities and differences in singing style of some artists from at least four consecutive generations representing four different gharanas using robust non-linear methods. For this, alap parts of a particular raga sung by all the artists were analyzed with the help of non linear multifractal analysis (MFDFA and MFDXA) technique.

Music Entrainment Seminar
Entrainment and interaction in Hindustani raga performance Martin Clayton and Laura Leante Durham University, UK 29 December 2016, 3 – 4 pm Lecture Hall Complex LCC-001 (opposite to KReSIT), IIT Bombay Abstract: In this paper we will draw together a number of strands in our recent research on the performance of Hindustani classical music, particularly as they relate to the themes of entrainment and interaction. In the first part we introduce the concept of interpersonal entrainment, the mechanism by which different individuals in a group coordinate their actions in time. How can this topic shed light on Indian music’s performance dynamics, and the structures involved in the music? We then broaden the discussion out to the theme of interpersonal interaction more broadly. Beyond the dynamics of synchronisation that allow musicians to play in time with each other, numerous other factors play a role in ensemble performance: leader-follower relationships, and various musical and social hierarchies are all involved in the realisation of a successful (or unsuccessful) performance. The talk will be illustrated with examples from our own collection of concert recordings. About the Speakers: Martin Clayton is Professor in Ethnomusicology at Durham University. He studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, and is a former sitar student of Deepak Choudhury (Maihar gharana). His research interests include Hindustani classical music, rhythmic analysis, musical entrainment and embodiment, comparative musicology and early field recordings, British-Asian music and Western music in India. Dr Laura Leante is a Lecturer in Ethnomusicology at Durham University. She studied ethnomusicology at the University of Rome "La Sapienza".

She was the iconic and famously reclusive surbahar (bass sitar) player. She was the daughter of Maihar gharana founder Ustad Allauddin Khan. She was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan award. Hindustani Music Hindustani classical music is an Indian classical music tradition. It originated in North India around 13th and 14th centuries. In contrast to Carnatic music, the other main Indian classical music tradition from South India, the Hindustani classical music was not only influenced by ancient Hindu musical traditions and Vedic philosophy but also by the Persian elements. Hindustani music is based on the raga system. The Raga is a melodic scale, comprising of notes from the basic seven- Sa, Re, Ga, Ma Pa, Dha and Ni. There is a rich tradition of Gharanas in classical Hindustani music. The music Gharanas are also called styles. These schools or Gharanas have their basis in the traditional mode of musical training and education. Every Gharana has its own distinct features. Popular gharanas are: Gwalior gharana, Agra Gharana, Indore Gharana, Jaipur Gharana. Hindustani classical music is primarily vocal-centric. The major vocal forms associated with Hindustani music are the khayal, Ghazal, dhrupad, dhammar, tarana and thumri. Dhrupad style of singing is traditionally performed by men with a tanpura and pakhawaj. The lyrics sung in Dhrupad are in a medieval form of Hindi and typically heroic in theme, or in praise of a particular deity.

Dave Cipriani is one of the leading exponents of Indian Slide Guitar in America, having previously studied under Indian Slide guitar pioneer Pandit Barun Kumar Pal. Indian Slide Guitar The Indian Slide Guitar is a relatively new instrument created by modifying the Hawaiian steel guitar and arch top Jazz guitar. It first came about when a Hawaiian musician by the name of Tau Moe took up a residency at the Taj hotel in Calcutta during the 1940s. The Hawaiian steel guitar is played flat on one’s lap with a steel bar as a slide and fingerpicks. Pandit Kartik Seshadri is a world-renowned force in Indian Classical Music. As a sitarist, he attracted widespread attention when he began performing full-length solos in India from the age of six. The sitar master is hailed as an “amazingly accomplished” musical powerhouse for his music’s “expressive beauty, rich tonal sensibility, and rhythmic intricacy,” by the Washington Post, while the Times of India noted that Seshadri’s concert was “a show stopper that transported the audience to soak soul deep in his mesmerizing performance.” Songlines Magazine (U.K.) declared his album Sublime Ragas as one of the “Top Ten of the World’s” CD’s, as with his 2004 Raga:Rasa album, further citing him as one of the “world’s greatest sitar players.” A confluence of multifarious musical influences steeped in the Maihar gharana’s dhrupad & beenkar styles, Seshadri began his initial training with Shri Shankar Rao of the Vishnupur gharana and further trained and toured worldwide with his acclaimed guru, Pandit Ravi Shankar. Seshadri performs extensively in his homeland and around the world, including the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, Australia, Mexico and the Middle East. He has played at prestigious venues and events ranging from Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, the Melbourne International Arts Festival in Australia, the Brighton Festival in U.K., the Ravinia Festival, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City to the Dover Lane, ITC, Sawai Gandharva Samaroh and Saptak Sammelans in India to name but a few. You will not hear Annapurna unless you are as fortunate as I was, crossing her path, indeed seeking her out – as a young woman in a moment of humiliation but also of inspiration. She was moved, by way of divine empathy, to open her vast estate – to offer & to extend the limits of the gharana – the ordinary barriers – of religion & culture & those less ordinary of instrumental hierarchy. Her father an unusual musician, was also an unusual humanitarian, teaching freely to pupils of widely divergent talent & circumstances, regardless of caste, gender & other factors so divisive, in general, in Indian society * Only a very unusual woman cld. have accomplished this. Hers is a talent, so natural, so profound, so inherently allied to the deepest & most esoteric resonance of both music & mantra that to hear her play as I did, one late afternoon in Mumbai, is a truly indescribable experience.
