This famed hipster mecca is home to a 31-foot tall Paul Bunyan statue, recreational marijuana, and a kilt-wearing Darth Vader on a unicycle who plays flame-shooting bagpipes (yes, seriously), among other oddities. As a city that introduces itself with the unofficial motto “Keep Portland Weird,” you already know you're in for a good time no matter where you go, though we have a few personal recommendations. With that said, here’s exactly where to eat, stay, and get super weird in the City of Roses. EAT: VOODOO DOUGHNUT No trip to Portland is complete without paying a little visit to the deliciously eccentric Voodoo Doughnut, where the doughy creations range from the Bacon Maple Bar, Maple Blazer Blunt (it's actually shaped like a blunt), the Old Dirty Bastard, and the Cock-N-Balls. ARDEN Small yet sophisticated, Arden is one of downtown Portland’s most intimate and impressive spots if you’re looking for a fantastic dinner with perfect wine pairings that are curated by owner and super-sommelier Kelsey Glasser. The menu is small but perfectly executed with elevated dishes like wild king salmon and adobo lamb loin with almond salsa. If you're unsure of what to order, get the Chef's Prix Fixe with four delicious courses -- but don't forget the coursed wine pairing. -

While the proposed site is proximate to some demand generators, the low density of commercial developments in the area is projected to be a weakness. But even though ancillaries have always been an effective strategy to boost sales, they are no longer seen by hotel executives as a mere supplement to other travel products. Today, they are increasingly the main event. Following the lead of the airline industry, which in 2017 earned an estimated $82 billion worldwide from sales of ancillary products, hotel executives are realizing that they are no longer simply selling access to just rooms and beds. Instead, they are now travel gatekeepers and tastemakers, selling access to a universe of related experiences connected to dining, entertainment, spas, tours and activities, retail, local services, and more. Taking this more expansive view of hospitality offers hotel businesses a variety of business benefits, including increased revenue, a more detailed understanding of the wants and needs of their customers, and an ability to drive more repeat business and create loyal customers. But in order to capitalize on this vision, hotels will need adjust their current ancillary approach. This will involve a renewed focus on better personalizing the types of ancillary offers they promote to customers, using what they know about guests to deliver more meaningful bundles of products that align with customer needs. -

FINAL DRAFT – FOR CITY COUNCIL APPROVAL City of Palm Springs Citywide Historic Context Statement & Survey Findings HISTORIC RESOURCES GROUP 49 CONTEXT: PALM SPRINGS BETWEEN THE WARS (1919-1941) Overview This context explores the transformation of Palm Springs from a modest spa town into a luxury winter resort in the years between the First and Second World Wars. By 1918 Nellie Coffman and her sons, George Roberson and Earl Coffman, understood the town’s potential, not as a health spa for asthmatics and consumptives, but as an exclusive winter resort for the well-to-do, and set about transforming their sanatorium into the luxurious Desert Inn, one of the most renowned hostelries in the country. Their success inspired the development of two equally spectacular hotels in the 1920s and cemented the town’s growing reputation as one of the country’s premier luxury winter resorts. These were the Oasis Hotel (121 S. Palm Canyon Drive; HSPB-10), designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Jr. (known as Lloyd Wright) and opened in 1925 by Pearl McCallum McManus;97 and the grand Hotel El Mirador (1150 N. Indian Canyon Drive), designed by Walker and Eisen in a sumptuous Spanish Colonial Revival style and opened in 1927.98 El Mirador Hotel, photographed c. 1933.
