This time last year the full scope and inherent dangers of COVID-19 were becoming clear. Our world was brought to a standstill, but our parish ministries continued because so many people needed our help. Recurring gifts helped sustain our parish in unprecedented times and continue to be a vital source of support for ministries, such as the Red Door, that are a lifeline to those in need in our community.

To continue to make a difference in 2021, Divine Mercy is reaching out to our parishioners. The more people use eGiving, the stronger foundation we will have for ministries that bring hope in times of uncertainty.

We prayerfully request that you consider signing up for eGiving from your computer, smartphone, or tablet. You can set up a recurring donation or make a one-time gift.

Sign up today by visiting faith.direct/PA1051, or text ‘Enroll’ to 412-415-7067.

Thank you for your continued support of our parish family.

God Bless You,

Father Chris

Fr. Chris’ Book of the Week Recommendation

As the reading of bad books fills the mind with worldly and poisonous sentiments; so, on the other hand, the reading of pious works fills the soul with holy thoughts and good desires. St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori

Apologetics and the Christian Imagination: An Integrated Approach to Defending the Faith Holly Ordway Emmaus Road Publishing

In this book, Holly Ordway shows how an imaginative approach—in cooperation with rational arguments is extremely valuable in helping people come to faith in Christ. Making a case for the role of imagination in apologetics, this book proposes ways to create meaning for Christian language in a culture that no longer understands words like 'sin' or 'salvation,' suggests how to discern and address the manipulation of language, and shows how metaphor and narrative work in powerful ways to communicate the truth. It applies these concepts to specific, key apologetics issues, including suffering, doubt, and longing for meaning and beauty.

Saint Valentine Feast Day: February 14

Saint Valentine, officially known as Saint Valentine of , is a third-century

Roman saint. Although not much of St. Valentine's life is reliably known, it is highly

agreed that he was martyred and then buried on the Via Flaminia to the north of

Rome.

One common story about St. Valentine is that in one point of his life, as the former Bishop of , Narnia and Amelia, he was on house arrest with Judge Asterius. While discussing religion and faith with the Judge, Valentine pledged the validity of Jesus. St. Valentine was presented with the judge's blind daughter and told to restore her sight. If he succeeded, the judge vowed to do anything for Valentine. Placing his hands onto her eyes, Valentine restored the child's vision. Judge Asterius broke all the idols around his house, fasted for three days and became baptized, along with his family and entire 44 member household. The now faithful judge then freed all of his Christian inmates.

St. Valentine was later arrested again for continuing to try to convert people to under the emperor (Claudius II). St. Valentine was imprisoned for marrying Christian couples and aiding being persecuted by Claudius in Rome. Both acts were considered serious crimes and Claudius commanded Valentine to renounce his faith or be sentenced to death. St. Valentine refused and was executed. However, other tales of St. Valentine's life exist but whoever he was, he did really exist, because archaeologists unearthed a Roman catacomb and an ancient church was dedicated to Saint Valentine. In 496 AD Gelasius marked February 14th as a celebration in honor of his martyrdom. Relics of St. Valentine can be found all over the world.
