FASTING AND ABSTINENCE

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of both fast and abstinence. In the United States, all Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. The law of abstinence obliges those 14 years of age and older not to eat meat. Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are between 18 years of age and the completion of their 59th birthday. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one's needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.

Our Peace of Christ Parish Community staff mission is to deepen the presence of Jesus, in ourselves and among all in our parish, by loving, empowering and serving others in their need today. Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Five “Christ, Our Light” 2020-2021 Catholic Ministries Appeal

Each month, this page appears in the bulletin to thank all who have given to this year’s Catholic Ministries Appeal. Names are added to the page as we receive pledges at the parish office or as we receive notice from the diocese that pledges have been received there. This Roster of Appreciation will continue to list all donors throughout the campaign with each month’s new pledges being appended to them in bold print. Names appear alphabetically (note: if you wish not to be listed, please indicate so on your card and we will include your gift under “Anonymous”). No individual pledge amounts are shown, just the average gift given thus far in the campaign. If after a month following the making of your pledge you still do not see your name, please let us know so that we can verify with the CMA Office at the Diocese that your pledge was credited to Peace of Christ Parish. Every now and then a pledge is miscoded and gets applied to some other parish’s goal until we discover the error—another reason for this list. The campaign ends in May. So that our parish will not be billed for any shortage of payment, please be encouraged to honor your pledge by May 31st. The diocese gives us almost three times our goal in subsidies and scholarships each year for our school. So, please, pledge now, and then pay as you can by 5/31/21. Just drop off or mail your completed pledge card (call us if you need one) as soon as possible before the above date. Thanks for acting on this in the generous manner that has marked Peace of Christ’s participation. Gifts which have helped us already include the following:

The average gift thus far is $311.18 and the above represent 24.2% of our parishioners. We have reached 103.07% of our $110,395 goal in pledges made; we have reached 87.51% of our goal in pledges paid. “Christ, Our Light” is this year’s theme. I know of some who have already increased their CMA gift this year so that the programs which serve so many in our parishes, schools and charitable institutions can continue for the good of all. So, thanks for sending in your support for the Appeal enabling the Church’s many services to continue to be present for us all! —Father Schrader

This is Diocesan Public Policy Weekend. Please show your support for feeding the hungry and supporting NYS farmers by signing and returning the petition below to the Peace of Christ office by the end of the month. You can also sign it online at dor.org/petition/ or through the link on the Peace of Christ Parish website.

Dear Governor Cuomo: NOURISH NEW YORK initiative has been an effective and creative response to the impact of the pandemic on New Yorkers, providing a lifeline for food-insecure families (many newly-insecure because of losses due to COVID-19) and for struggling farmers, the fishing community and food processors across the state. We call on state leaders to allocate $50 million for fiscal year 2021-2022 to make NOURISH NEW YORK an ongoing program to respond to the need for hunger relief and survival of farms, fisheries, food processors in New York State.

Respectfully yours, ______(signature) (print name) ______(address/zip)
