E.G.E. van der Wall Telephone: + 31.71.527.2575 E-mail: : [email protected] Profile In the most general sense Ernestine van der Wall’s historical work revolves around questions of religious diversity, toleration, and the interdependence of liberal and conservative religion. Initially she devoted her studies to religious dissidents in the 17th century, with special attention paid to apocalyptic and mystical- millenarian expectations. In this context she also dealt extensively with Jewish-Christian relations. Next she shifted her attention to the question how believers try to cope with modern thought, culture, and society. This has resulted in work on the relationship between religion and Enlightenment, with a focus on significant 18th-century controversies such as the notorious Bélisaire affair (or the so-called ‘Socratic War’) about the salvation of virtuous unbelievers. Her current historical interest concerns the comparative study of liberal religion within Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, and Anglicanism in the 19th and early 20th centuries. More specifically, she is interested in the phenomenon of internationalism as it manifested itself in the international organizations of religious liberals and modernists in the early twentieth century. In close connection with this field of interest she studies novels published by European and American authors between 1870 and 1930 which deal with the intellectual, moral, and emotional dilemmas of believers who say goodbye to the orthodox faith of their youth. This project involves the analysis of such significant notions as sincerity, integrity, loyalty, heresy and apostasy. Curriculum vitae Ernestine van der Wall was awarded her MA in the study of religion at Leiden University in 1979 and her doctorate at Leiden University in 1987 for a study of the mystical millenarian Pierre Serrurier/Petrus Serrarius (1600-1669) and his international networks. From 1985 to 1987 she was assistant professor at the Sir Thomas Browne Institute of Leiden University. From 1987 to 1992 she was assistant professor of the history of Christianity at the Faculty of Theology of Leiden University. Since 1992 she held the chair of the culture and -2- 2 history of Christianity at Leiden. From 1996 to 1998 she was dean of the Faculty of Theology.
