Lund University Johan Peter Sundberg Centre for Languages and Literature 801212-0518 Film Studies Master's Thesis: LIV704 Tutors: Lars Gustaf Andersson & Erik Hedling Seminar Date: 2015-01-15 Title Page Transformative Screenwriting: Charlie Kaufman’s Postmodern Adaptation of Story Nothing is random. Nothing that happens to him has no point. Nothing that he says happens to him in his life does not get turned into something that is useful to him. Things that appear to have been pointlessly destructive and poisoning, things that look at the time to have been wasteful and appalling and spoiling, are the things that turn out to be, say, the writing of Portnoy's Complaint. As each person comes into his life, you begin to think, "So what is this person's usefulness going to be? What is this person going to provide him in the way of the book?" Well, maybe this is the difference between the writer's life and an ordinary life.1 – Philip Roth, The Facts Table of Contents Title Page ........................................................................................................................................... 1 Table of Contents ............................................................................................................................ 2 Part 1: Introduction ............................................................................................................. 3 Cast, Acronyms and Abbreviations ........................................................................................... 6 Method and Purpose .....................................................................................................................

i Music Video Auteurs: The Directors Label DVDs and the Music Videos of Chris Cunningham, Michel Gondry and Spike Jonze. by Tristan Fidler Bachelor of Arts (With First Class Honours), UWA ’04. This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Western Australia. English, Communication and Cultural Studies. 2008 ii MUSIC VIDEO AUTEURS ABSTRACT Music video is an intriguing genre of television due to the fact that music drives the images and ideas found in numerous and varied examples of the form. Pre-recorded pieces of pop music are visually written upon in a palimpsest manner, resulting in an immediate and entertaining synchronisation of sound and vision. Ever since the popularity of MTV in the early 1980s, music video has been a persistent fixture in academic discussion, most notably in the work of writers like E. Ann Kaplan, Simon Frith and Andrew Goodwin. What has been of major interest to such cultural scholars is the fact that music video was designed as a promotional tool in their inception, supporting album sales and increasing the stardom of the featured recording artists. Authorship in music video studies has been traditionally kept to the representation of music stars, how they incorporate post-modern references and touch upon wider cultural themes (the Marilyn Monroe pastiche for the Madonna video, Material Girl (1985) for instance). What has not been greatly discussed is the contribution of music video directors, and the reason for that is the target audience for music videos are teenagers, who respond more to the presence of the singer or the band than the unknown figure of the director, a view that is also adhered to by music television channels like MTV.

Disparate films from a variety of genres use different forms of popular music in different ways, however these negotiations with pop music and its cultural surroundings have one true implication: that the 'inde- pendentness' (or 'indieness') of these movies is informed, anchored and embellished by their relationships with their soundtracks and/or the representations of or posi- tioning within wider popular music subcultures.

  • Dialogue and Intimacy in Spike Jonze's Her. Bronwen Thomas
All Talk: Dialogue and Intimacy in Spike Jonze’s Her. Bronwen Thomas Running head: Dialogue and Intimacy in Film Abstract Sarah Kozloff’s groundbreaking Overhearing Film Dialogue (2000) went some considerable way towards addressing what she sees as the ‘anti-dialogue bias’ (14) in film studies and its neglect of the form. Nevertheless, the focus in most recent studies (e.g. Jaeckle 2013) remains on dialogue as a window to character psychology, and on the realism of the representation of speech and verbal events rather than on what Kay Young (2001, 90) calls the ‘processural acts of two people conversing’. This chapter will focus on the ways in which film dialogue can enact and foreground the complex mechanisms underlying conversational interaction, and demonstrate the ways in which verbal interaction may be as much about concealment and solipsism as it is about intimacy and revelation. With close reference to Spike Jonze’s Her, which centres on the developing relationship between a lonely writer and an operating system designed to fulfill his every need, the chapter will examine how the film’s foregrounding of character dialogue to the exclusion of almost everything else challenges convention and relies on the audience to read between the lines of the characters’ utterances. The chapter will draw on theories of dialogue from literary criticism, narratology and linguistics as well as film studies to argue that dialogue in film is not just about exquisitely staged scenes or displays of auteurish experimentation, but plays an integral role in the audience’s active engagement with the characters and their investment in their unfolding relationships.

from the start. He initially edited music videos for Jonze – including Weezer’s “Buddy Holly” and Fatboy Slim’s “Weapon of Choice,” Remembering both of which earned him MTV VMA Awards for editing – but during their remarkable 23-year relationship they collaborated Eric Zumbrunnen, ACE on every genre, from performance art pieces to big-budget films. Although Zumbrunnen had been successful at editing both music videos and commercials by the late 1990s, he found the world of BY BOBBIE O’STEEN feature films impenetrable until Steve Golin, a producer on some of Jonze’s projects, was able to bring along key members of his crew, including Zumbrunnen, for Jonze’s feature-film debut. Being John Malkovich, made in 1999, earned Zumbrunnen an Eddie Award and a BAFTA® nomination. He presumed when he started working on features that “since they were spending millions, everything would be figured out ahead of time,” particularly since the screenplay was so intricate. But he soon learned and embraced how “malleable a movie could be.” The screenplay by Charlie Kaufman was wildly inventive, focusing on a puppeteer who finds a portal into the mind of John Malkovich. Yet the audience was not alienated by the surreal storyline because the film was grounded in humor and a surprising sweetness and melancholy. Zumbrunnen talked about “feeling for these people, not just enjoying the cleverness of it” and fortunately there was plenty of opportunity to achieve that equilibrium since Jonze believes in finding the film in the cutting room. He is, Zumbrunnen said, “a wonderful collaborator who is always willing to entertain new ideas.” ric Zumbrunnen, ACE, – or “EZ”– to many of those fortunate Joe Hutshing, ACE, was an additional editor on that film.
