I’M NOT THERE (1956-2007) Stephen Scobie Je est un autre—Arthur Rimbaud I’m Not There (2007) In this autumn season of 2007, I can see that I am going to be thinking a lot about the Bob Dylan song known as “I’m Not There (1956).” At least, that is the title given to it on most of its early, bootleg appearances. Now that it has finally been officially released, the sub-title date has been dropped—which is a pity (since it added an element of mystery to the song) but also understandable (since no good explanation of the date has ever been given). “I’m Not There” is perhaps the ultimate Dylan bootleg, and has always been a subject for cult idealization as the most obscure of Dylan’s “lost” songs: a major master- piece that almost no one knows, and which indeed seems to conspire actively against being known. Now, it has become the title of Todd Haynes’s movie I’m Not There, “inspired by the music and many lives of Bob Dylan”—“many” being the operative word. The film is already famous for casting six different actors to play aspects of Dylan at different points in his career. If this strategy is a gimmick, it is a successful one: the film is generating vast amounts of advance publicity, much of it based on the photographs of Cate Blanchett looking, uncannily and androgynously, like 1966 Bob. The film is not due for North American release until late November, though it has played in prestigious festivals like Toronto, New York, and Venice. -

Nashville Director: Robert Altman Country: USA Date: 1975 A review by Roger Ebert: Taking down Pauline Kael's 1976 collection Reeling to re-read her famous review of "Nashville," I find a yellow legal sheet marking the page: my notes for a class I taught on the film. "What is this story about?" I wrote. The film may be great because you can't really answer that question. It is a musical; Robert Altman observes in his commentary on the new DVD re-release that it contains more than an hour of music. It is a docudrama about the Nashville scene. It is a political parable, written and directed in the immediate aftermath of Watergate (the scenes in the Grand Ole Opry were shot on the day Richard M. Nixon resigned). It tells interlocking stories of love and sex, of hearts broken and mended. And it is a wicked satire of American smarminess ("Welcome to Nashville and to my lovely home," a country star gushes to Elliott Gould). But more than anything else, it is a tender poem to the wounded and the sad. The most unforgettable characters in the movie are the best ones: Lily Tomlin's housewife, who loves her deaf sons. The lonely soldier who stands guard over the country singer his mother saved from a fire. The old man grieving for his wife, who has just died. Barbara Harris' runaway wife, who rises to the occasion when she is handed the microphone after a shooting. And even that smarmy country singer (Henry Gibson), who when the chips are down acts in the right way. -

Think about how much the entertainment industry has changed since the Press Club introduced these awards in 2008. Arnold Schwarzenegger was our governor, not a Terminator. Netflix sent you DVDs in the mail. The iPhone was one year old. Fast forward to today and the explosion of technology and content that is changing our lives and keeping journalists busy across the globe. Entertainment journalism has changed as well, with all of us taking a much harder look at how societal issues influence Hollywood, from workplace equality and diversity to coverage of political events, the impact of social media and U.S.-China rela- tions. Your Press Club has thrived amid all this. Participation is way up, with more Chris Palmeri than 600 dues-paying members. The National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards have grown and changed as well. Tonight we’re in a ballroom in the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, but in 2008 the awards took place in the Steve Allen Theater, the Press Club’s old home in East Hollywood. That building has since been torn down. Our first event in 2008 featured a cocktail party with no host and only 111 entries in the competition. -

Braving the skepticism and ridicule of those around them and trained by a fallen champion trying to pull herself together, the group set out on an unlikely adventure, and on the way will rediscover a little self-esteem and a lot about themselves and each other. After Narco and The Players, Sink or Swim is the first film you’ve made as a solo director. Did you have difficulty launching a solo project, or was it just a question of timing? A little of both! Most of all, I needed to find a subject that really spoke to me and would enable me to make a film even more personal than Narco. As for The Players, that was a group project. I really enjoyed making both of those films, but neither was intimately linked to who I am. All of this took some time because after Narco, my “actors’ films” were the center of attention. How long has it taken to bring Sink or Swim to life? Five years. In fact, it was eight years ago that I began writing a script that already contained a few of the ideas in Sink or Swim. I wanted to examine the weariness – or perhaps the somewhat latent depression – that I sensed in people of my generation or even more generally in France. -
