TINDERBOX Adds the PRODIGY to the Impressive List of Headliners 2015-02-03 10:00 CET TINDERBOX adds The PRODIGY to the impressive list of headliners TINDERBOX adds The PRODIGY to the impressive list of headliners Furthermore adding HOZIER, MODEST MOUSE and MILKY CHANCE The Prodigy (UK) has cut a solitary path of noise through the unruly landscape of electronic music for the last 25 years. Known as one of the world's most energetic live bands and loved at festivals and clubs throughout the world. They have released a long list of world famous club classics like Breathe, Smack My Bitch Up, Voodoo People and Firestarter. They have released five groundbreaking albums. The sixth "The Day Is My Enemy" to be released in March. We look forward to an explosion of a party at TINDERBOX Friday, June 26. Modest Mouse (US), from Washington State, are impossible to categorize other than the indefinable Indie. In the twenty years they have existed, their audience has grown bigger and bigger, and their wonderful concerts often ends in total party and chaos, where the stage and the audience forms one big melting pot. Their quirky songs can be much longer than the standard 3-4 minutes, sometimes up to 11 minutes - simply because the joy of playing takes over. Modest Mouse is the band that broke the rules and became a completely unpredictable success. They come to Tinderbox backed by the new album "Strangers to Ourselves" to be released in March and play Friday, June 26. Hozier (IRL) is the artist name of 24 -year-old Andrew Hozier-Byrne. Based on the big hit "Take Me To Church", his debut album kicked off with a huge hype. He came unexpectedly, as an unknown and a completely unimpressed songwriter. The hype proved to be true; the album lived up to expectations. Hozier is something special, with his strong songs and lyrics Clash Magazine named him "soulful, spiritual and seductive". Reviewers, radio stations and audience just adored him. We look forward to a special concert Friday, June 26 at TINDERBOX. Milky Chance (D) is the group name for the duo Clemens and Philipp. Another completely fresh breakthrough that is booked for TINDERBOX. The duo's debut album, and especially the single "Stolen Dance", spread virally on internet and radio stations across the United States and Europe. Was quickly followed up by sell-out tours. Milky Chance are singer/songwriters that mixes alternative folk and reggae, adding Clemens unique vocal on top. Milky Chance plays Saturday, June 27. Schocket, Advisor Karen B. Guzzo Graduate Faculty Representative Benjamin P. Greene Rebecca J. Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen.

There are opportunities for you to revise material you have previously studied, practice skills that you have learned in class and sometimes learn something new. As a minimum you will a pen and some paper to complete these tasks. If you need these, please collect from the reception desk at the academy. For some of the mind- mapping tasks you might wish to use coloured pens or pencils but they are not essential. Some tasks may ask you to create packs of flashcards. You can use any kind of paper or card for this but don’t worry if you don’t have enough, just choose another task. While you are not in school you should follow your normal school timetable and complete an hour of work for each hour you would normally be studying that subject in school. You may find that, without the support of your teacher you complete tasks more slowly than you would do in a lesson and that is absolutely fine. If you get really stuck on something, move on to the next task and/or seek help from the internet, a parent/guardian or by e-mailing or phoning your teacher if possible.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

  • 2. Case Study: Anime Music Videos
    2. CASE STUDY: ANIME MUSIC VIDEOS Dana Milstein When on 1 August 1981 at 12:01 a.m. the Buggles’ ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ aired as MTV’s first music video, its lyrics parodied the very media pre- senting it: ‘We can’t rewind, we’ve gone too far, . put the blame on VTR.’ Influenced by J. G. Ballard’s 1960 short story ‘The Sound Sweep’, Trevor Horn’s song voiced anxiety over the dystopian, artificial world developing as a result of modern technology. Ballard’s story described a world in which natu- rally audible sound, particularly song, is considered to be noise pollution; a sound sweep removes this acoustic noise on a daily basis while radios broad- cast a silent, rescored version of music using a richer, ultrasonic orchestra that subconsciously produces positive feelings in its listeners. Ballard was particu- larly criticising technology’s attempt to manipulate the human voice, by con- tending that the voice as a natural musical instrument can only be generated by ‘non-mechanical means which the neruophonic engineer could never hope, or bother, to duplicate’ (Ballard 2006: 150). Similarly, Horn professed anxiety over a world in which VTRs (video tape recorders) replace real-time radio music with simulacra of those performances. VTRs allowed networks to replay shows, to cater to different time zones, and to rerecord over material. Indeed, the first VTR broadcast occurred on 25 October 1956, when a recording of guest singer Dorothy Collins made the previous night was broadcast ‘live’ on the Jonathan Winters Show. The business of keeping audiences hooked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, promoted the concept of quantity over quality: yes- terday’s information was irrelevant and could be permanently erased after serving its money-making purpose.

THE BLESSED PLACEMAKERS: VIOLENT CRIME, MORAL TRANSFORMATION, AND URBAN REDEVELOPMENT IN POST-KATRINA NEW ORLEANS by Rebecca L. Carter A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Anthropology) in The University of Michigan 2010 Doctoral Committee: Professor Gillian Feeley-Harnik, Chair Professor Thomas E. Fricke Associate Professor Stuart A. Kirsch Associate Professor Paul Christopher Johnson © Rebecca L. Carter All rights reserved 2010 DEDICATION For Evan ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS There aren‟t enough words to fully express my gratitude for the guidance, encouragement, and generous support I have received during the completion of this dissertation and my doctoral degree. It has been a long but extremely rewarding process; an endeavor that has unfolded over the span of the last six years. Of that time, three years were spent completing coursework and training at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; two years (July 2007 – July 2009) were spent doing ethnographic fieldwork in New Orleans, Louisiana; and the final year was spent writing up in my home state of Tennessee, as part of a dissertation writing and teaching fellowship based at Middle Tennessee State University. To be afforded the time and the occasion to work as an anthropologist and ethnographer at all is something of a luxury; I frequently remind myself what a dream job and a privilege it is. There are many people that I must thank for the opportunity, and for their help in seeing the research through until the end. So many, that in many ways the finished product is perhaps best situated as a collective and collaborative project rather than a solo venture.
