The Evening Primrose

When once the sun sinks in the west, And dew-drops pearl the evening's breast; Almost as pale as moonbeams are, Or its companionable star, The evening primrose opes anew Its delicate blossoms to the dew And hermit-like, shunning the light, Wastes its fair bloom upon the night; Who, blindfold to its fond caresses, Knows not the beauty he possesses. Thus it blooms on while night is by. When day looks out with open eye, 'Bashed at the gaze it cannot shun, It faints and withers and is gone. - John Clare

Tha Ballad of the Green Broom

There was an old man lived out in the wood, And his trade was a-cutting of broom, green broom, He had but one son without thought without good Who lay in his bed till 'twas noon, bright noon.

The old man awoke one morning and spoke, He swore he would fire the room, that room, - If his John would not rise and open his eyes, And away to the wood to cut broom, green broom.

So Johnny arose and slipp' d on his clothes And away to the wood to cut broom, green broom, He sharpen'd his knives, and for once he contrives To cut a great bundle of broom, green broom.

When Johnny pass' d under a Lady's fine house, Pass' d under a Lady's fine room, fine room, She call'd to her maid: "Go fetch me," she said, "Go fetch me the boy that sells broom, green broom!"

When Johnny came into the Lady's fine house, And stood in the Lady's fine room, fine room, "Young Johnny" she said, "Will you give up your trade And marry a lady in bloom, full bloom?" Johnny gave his consent, and to church they both went, And he wedded the Lady in bloom, full bloom; At market and fair, all folks do declare, There's none like the boy that sold broom, green broom. -Anonymous

Ave Verum Corpus

Ave verum corpus, All hail thou true Christi natum holyflesh of our savior, Jesus, ex Maria Virginum. son of Mary virgin pure.

Vere possum immolatum, Thou who hast died With such suffering, In cruce pro homine. For the sins of all mankind. Old Abram Brown

A Pavane for the Nursery

Now touch the air softly, Step gently. One, two ...

I' 11 love you till roses Are robin's-egg blue; I'll love you til gravel Is eaten for bread, And lemons are orange, And lavender's red.

Now touch the air softly, Swing gently the broom.

I' 11 love you till windows Are all of a room; And the table is laid, And the table is bare, And the ceiling reposes On bottomless air.

I'll love you till Heaven Rips the stars from its coat, And the moon rows away in A glass-bottomed boat; And Orion sweeps down Like a diver below, And earth is ablaze, And Ocean aglow.

So touch the air softly, And swing the broom high. We will dust the grey mountains And sweep blue the sky; And I'll love you as long As the furrow the plow, As however is Ever, And Ever is now. - William Jay Smith - The Gift to Be Simple

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'Tis the gift to be free, 'Tis the gift to come down Where you oughta be. And when we find ourselves in a place just right, 'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

When true simplicity is gained, To bow and to bend we shan't be ashamed, To turn, turn will be our delight, Till by turning, turning we come 'round right.

Go Down Moses

Go down, Moses, Go down to Egypt land!

Let me tell ya 'bout a story 'long time ago Way down in Egypt land. Seems the Pharaoh had taken control of thngs, Had the people in the palm of his hands.

But a certain group of people called the Israelites, Didn't want to play his game, So the Pharaoh forced the people into slavery And he caused them grief and shame.

Well, the Lord in the heaven looked down and saw His people and their pain, So he called out a man from Midian And Moses was his name.

Well, Moses was attendin' his flock one day When a bush began to burn, And the Lord spoke to Moses from the burning bush, Said, "The Pharaoh's got a lesson to learn!"

Go down, Moses, Way down to Egypt land. Tell ole Pharaoh Let my people go! Well, Moses had some doubts about takin' this job. He felt a little bit out of his league. Leading out his people from the Pharaoh's land Was quite a job indeed.

"What will I say and tell me how Will they know that I'm the man appointed by you? A leader I'm not, but I bet for this spot My brother Aaron will do better for.you,"

But the Lord said, Go down, Moses, Way down to Egypt land. Tell ole Pharaoh Let me people go! Back by the bush the Lord kept on; He knew He had the right man. "You need a sign, well, that's just fine. Just look what you have in your hand."

All it seemed to Moses was a wooden rod Until he threw it down. Imagine his surprise when a snake appeared As soon as it hit the ground.

Well, Moses started runnin' but the lord said, "Stop, Pick the serpent up by the tail." What the Lord suggested seemed crazy to him And he protested to no avail.

When he finally picked up the serpent you know what occurred. The snake became a rod in his hand. The miracle that happened gave old Moses the strength To lead his people to the Promised Land!

Go down, Moses, Way down to Egypt land. Tell ole Pharaoh Let me people go!

Laura Lee

Why has thy merry face gone from my side, Leaving each cherish'd place cheerless and void? Why has the happy dream, Blended with thee passed like a flitting beam, Sweet Laura Lee?

Far from all pleasure tom, sad and alone, How doth my spirit mourn while thou art gone? How like a desert isle Earth seems to me, Robbed of thy sunny smile, Sweet Laura Lee.

When will thy winning voice breathe on mine ear! When will my heart rejoice, finding thee near? When will we roam the plain, joyous and free, Never to part again, Sweet Laura Lee.

When shall we meet again, joyous and free, Never to part again, Sweet Laura Lee.

Vive I' amour

Let every good fellow, now join in our song, Vive la compagnie ! [long live our companions J Success to each other, and pass it along, Vive la compagnie!

Chorus: Vive l'amour! [long live love!} Come all you good fellow and join in with me And raise up your voices in close harmony! Should time or occasion, compel us to part These days shall forever, enliven our heart

Let every old bachelor fill up his glass, And drink to the health of his favorite lass,

Let every old married man drink to his wife, The joy of his bosom and comfort of life, Vive la compagnie!

Blue Skies

Blue skies ain't smilin' at me Never a blue sky do I see Blue days comin' along Always a blue day in my song

Blue skies smilin' at me Nothing but blue skies do I see Blue birds singin' a song Nothing but blue birds singin' thru the whole day long

Never saw the sun shining so bright Never saw things going so right Noticing the day hurry by When you're in love, oh my! how they fly

Blue days all of them gone Nothing but blue skies from now on

If you're blue and you don't know where to go to, Why don't you go where fashion sits, Puttin' on the Ritz.

Diff'rent types who wear a day coat, Pants with strips and cutaway coat, Perfect fits puttin' on the Ritz. Dressed up like a million dollar trouper Tryin' hard to look like Gary Cooper Super duper

Come let's walk where Rockefellers walk, With sticks or "umberellas" in their mitts, Puttin' on the Ritz. - ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Lehigh University Choral Arts is comprised of four groups: The University Choir, the all-male Glee Club, our women's ensemble Dolce and our town-student-faculty symphonic choir, the Choral Union.

The University Choir is auditioned at the beginning of each school year. The 54 members come from all majors and classes in the university. The hallmarks of the University Choir are dedication, musicianship and versatility. Each year, the University Choir performs four concerts on campus, including our annual Christmas Vespers program. The University Choir has been heard on National Public Radio and shared the stage with the professional ensemble , performing Monteverdi's Vespers della beata Vergine, 1610. They frequently perform new music and tour internationally. Past tours have included Costa Rica, Portugal, China; Germany and the Czech Republic, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Berlin; California; the Virgin Islands; Austria and Hungary; France; and East Asia. In May of 2013, the Choir will be on tour to Hawai'i.

Lehigh's distinguished tradition of singing began in the 1880s with an all• male Lehigh University Glee Club. For nearly a century, the Glee Club was the only choral group at Lehigh. When Lehigh became coeducational in the 70s, the mixed University Choir replaced the all-male Glee Club. In 2005, the men of the University Choir - with encouragement from Glee Club alumni - revived the tradition of male singing at Lehigh. Today, after a thirty year hiatus, the hallmark sound of male singing is once again part of Lehigh's proud tradition of choral excellence. The Lehigh University Glee Club, with members drawn from the University Choir, maintains an extensive repertoire encompassing masterworks for male voices, barbershop, spirituals and Lehigh fight songs in addition to new works specially written for them. They perform at most Lehigh Choral Arts concerts and off campus in both formal and informal settings, spreading their love for Lehigh and its tradition of male singing.

The history of Dolce is closely connected to the history of women at Lehigh. The first women undergraduates were admitted to Lehigh in 1971and with that, the women's Chamber Singers became an active force on campus. In 1979, the group was disbanded in order to join with the Lehigh University Glee Club to form what is today known as the University Choir. Dolce was founded six years ago and today the members of Dolce, drawn from the University Choir, explore the wealth of choral music written especially for women's voices. Steven Sametz, the Ronald J. Ulrich Professor of Music and Director of Lehigh University Choral Arts, is active as both conductor and composer. His innovative programming for Lehigh Choral Arts has taken singers and audiences on journeys around the world, featuring collaborations with dancers, Indian tabla and North African takht ensembles, and premieres of works in Hindi, Japanese and Tlingit written for , , and giant puppets. Cutler-Sametz Choral Arts Scholarship Program Each year, Lehigh Choral Arts recruits the finest of our nation's high school singers to be part of our program. The Lehigh Choral Arts Scholarship is a merit-based stipend open to all majors in the University by audition. Through our scholarship outreach program, we have brought over 25 scholars to Lehigh. For more information, see our website at www.lehighchoralarts.com

Teufel Vocal Scholarship Program Through the generosity of the Teufel family, many of our students are able to study private voice. This is an invaluable addition to the Choral Arts program and we gratefully acknowledge the support.

Lehigh Choral Arts Artists-in-Residence programs One of our great strengths at Lehigh is being able to bring professionals and amateurs together on stage to perform masterworks of the choral-orchestral repertoire. Our Artist-in-Residence program brings internationally renowned soloists to perform and give masterclasses for our vocal students. We are so grateful to those families and friends who have helped us create our Sebastian, Dyer, Finkel, Shabaker and Comfort Artist-in-Residence programs. The Sametz Artist-in-Residence is supported by contributions from our Choral Union members themselves who feel that they want to give something back for all the joy they have in singing with Lehigh Choral Arts. If you would like to help support either our Artist-in-Residence or Choral Scholar programs, please call 610 758 3833. - Friends of Zoellner Arts Center 2012-2013 Season The Board of Trustees of Lehigh University gratefully acknowledges and recognizes the following alumni, friends, corporations and foundations for their generosity in supporting the annual campaign for the Friends of Zoellner Arts Center:
