Creigiau Community Market The Church Hall resonates to the babble of stall holders selling their wares and the buyers shopping for Eco- bargains. Yes, this is the monthly Community Market in the Church Hall, Creigiau. Over 200 people visited the Market on every occasion in the three months’ trial. So what did they find? The hall buzzing with up to seventeen stalls, and stall holders selling fresh vegetables, organic meats, breads and cakes, cheeses, organic homemade tea, organic eggs, preserves, gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan foods. There may even be organic beer in September! Tea, cakes and biscuits are also available, giving shoppers a little breathing and chatting space before returning to buy. So many people have come together to make this an event to serve the communities of our villages, and the response has been excellent, to the delight of the church volunteers who have worked with such enthusiasm to make the venture successful. It is now expected to become a permanent monthly event. Entry is free and the doors are open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Market will be held on the second Saturday of every month, except this November when it will be on the first Saturday.

11 DEMENTIA FRIENDLY GARTH Public Meeting Friday 8th November, 7.0pm, Village Hall, Pentyrch Village Hall, Pentyrch Dementia is a collective name for progressive brain disease, which affects memory, thinking, behaviour and emotion. It is a relentlessly progressive disease and currently there is no cure. Until such a cure is found, there is increasing recognition across society that those affected by dementia need to be supported and accepted, and able to live in their community without fear or prejudice. Recent years have seen the development of ‘Dementia Friendly ‘ towns and organisations, where there has been a focus on raising awareness within the respective communities of the special needs of these people and the considerable benefits that relatively small initiatives can bring to the quality of their lives. Garth Rotary, which embraces Pentyrch, Creigiau and Gwaelod-y-Garth, is exploring the possibility of making our community dementia friendly with the potential development of initiatives such as: a ‘memory café’; helping staff in shops to interact more effectively with people living with dementia; and improving signage and lighting. To that end we will shortly be holding an ‘Open Evening’ to gauge the demand and interest in such an initiative and explore how best to take it forward. For this to be successful we need to have a broad community base so your support will be vital. Please come to our meeting on 8th November if: -  You can represent a local business or organisation  You have experience of dealing with dementia  You would like to volunteer to help Pentyrch Art Group For further information please contact John or Toni th Young 02920 890455 (after 25th Oct) or Rhiannon Our 24 annual exhibition at the end of May was as Chivers ([email protected], 07880435148 successful as ever- thanks to all those who came, over 350 during the course of the day. We have a busy Autumn term to look forward to, we shall be having an acrylic demonstration by marine artist Nick John Rees on November 18th. This will be open to non members, and will be at the Village Hall from 1.00pm until 3.00pm, if you are interested, please just turn up. We charge £2 entry, which includes a cup of tea or coffee. We are also looking forward to a workshop at Chapel Cottage Studios, Abergavenny in October, with professional artist Jantien Powell. The group will have also a stall at the Village Hall Christmas Fair on November 30th - an opportunity to shop early for Christmas! MOBILE PHONE MAST

Further to all our previous statements, there continues to be no substantive progress to report in the negotiations between our agent and the mobile phone operator at the present time. All parties are attempting to come to terms with the impact of the new legislation and in particular recent case law. The PSA’s objective continues to be to try and achieve a satisfactory outcome without the matter having to be referred to the Land Tribunal by the mobile phone operator. Any further developments will also be published on the Planning section of the Pentyrch Community Council website and on the council’s Facebook page. Creigiau Railway Woodlands – Volunteers Wanted For those of us who would like the outdoors and would like a day out in the woods, Keep Creigiau Tidy has teamed up with Sustrans to bring the Conservation Volunteer experience to Creigiau. Sustrans have a well- established volunteer programme and they are bringing this to Creigiau. Our woodlands along the former Creigiau railway lines require careful management and maintenance as well as making improvements in terms of drainage, making sure paths are not blocked and clearing vegetation & those fallen or falling trees that may cause a hazard to users of the woodlands. All you need are sturdy shoes, gloves and appropriate clothing for the weather. Everyone is welcome, and you can do as much or as little as you want. For those unfamiliar with Creigiau Railway Woods, this could be a lovely opportunity to see a hidden side of the community. Sustrans are a wonderful group of people and they do not hesitate to share their knowledge or enthusiasm. Informal ‘training’ on topics such as foraging or wildlife identification and survey skills are often included. Interested? Please contact [email protected] or follows us on twitter @TidyCreigiau. Usual start time is 10 am, meeting point is the Pavilion at Creigiau Recreation Field. Tuesday 15th October Maintenance work day with possible foraging experience entitled ‘how not to kill yourself whilst foraging.’ Tuesday 3rd December Christmas maintenance workday with mince pies (and Christmas jumpers optional). 18 Pentyrch Terracycle Reducing the waste we send to landfill. Over the last 100 years the amount of waste humanity produces has increased by almost 10,000%. 25% of this ends up in our oceans, most of the rest is mummified in landfills. We are in the middle of a global garbage crisis. Here in our local community we are doing something about this! Crisp packets, popcorn, pretzel and nut bags, chocolate bar wrappers and sweet packaging are not currently recyclable through council collections schemes. They all have to go into our black bins and go to landfill. So, we have become a member of Terracycle – a global organization collecting the non recyclable and turning it into new products. Pentyrch Terracycle have bins outside the Spar in Pentyrch, boxes in the PCC offices, collections at the Kings Arms and Lewis Arms from the snacks they sell and Pentyrch and Creigiau A lovely shot of one of our little primary schools. In addition, one of our residents has residents picking up litter on her set up a collection of Contact Lens packaging for us. walk to nursery to put in the We even have people collecting at work places now terracycle bin for recycling. Who told her about play equipment too. The empty packaging is sent to Terracycle and is for Memorial Park! turned into plastic pellets to be made into playground equipment, park benches, plant pots, watering cans and more. At our current rate, in one year we will have sent off enough packaging to fill a 40 foot container – that’s a lot of waste not going to landfill and we should be very proud of this. In addition, for every 2 kilos of material we send off we get £2 towards the charity of our choice - at the moment this is Pentyrch Memorial Park fund - but this can become other charitable causes in time. We have recently received a donation from Garth Rotary who have generously paid for us to have a third bin outside the Spar so that I can apply for a new collection scheme for cleaning product packaging and also for a large grey wheelie bin to be located on my drive so that work place schemes and those who have bags to hand over can drop them off without filling up the Spar bins in one go. If you would like to find out more or get involved please find us on facebook @ Pentyrch Terracycle or call Stef on 07800 644452.

25 St Catwg’s Church Organ Refurbishment Project. St Catwg’s Church has a good pipe organ that was installed in 1910. At the time the vestry (priest’s robing room) measured 13ft 6in. long by 6ft 10in deep with a sloping roof. To house an organ demanded a bigger room. After a rebuild the room measured 13ft 6in. by 16ft 3in. Subsequently an organ was purchased. However, it was not until 1910 that the work was completed: Thomas Gardiner appointed as the organ blower at 6d a service. This was a large financial commitment from the Church Council. As with anything with so many moving parts there comes a time when some have to be replaced and that is the stage that we have reached now with St Catwg’s organ. Improvement work was undertaken over thirty years ago. The organ described by a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists as: “A very good organ for a church of this size”, now needs further work. An appeal has been launched to raise money so that we can undertake the work that is likely to mean that the organ will be in good condition for the next fifty years at least. Alongside envelopes at services in the Church Hall, St David’s, St Ellteyrn’s and St Catwg’s Churches a “Just Giving” opportunity is on the website www.parishofpentyrch.org.uk There will also be a number of fundraising activities that I hope you will feel able to support. Pentyrch Active Recreation Committee (PARC) John Gough Pentyrch Active Recreation Committee have now secured funding to begin the first phase of new equipment for Memorial Park. We are excited to announce that there will be an adventure trail coming to the park soon. This has only been made possible thanks to all the fantastic support we have received from the community - well done everyone! Special mentions to PCC for their ongoing support with this project, and the generous donations from Pentyrch WI, Lewis Arms Quiz teams, Pugh's Garden Village and Carol Saint and her refreshments at the recent history walk. This is only the first phase - we are working harder than ever to provide further facilities. You can help by continuing to put your loose change in the collection pots, using the new Terracycle scheme and also by purchasing books for just £1 each at the Lewis Arms - thanks to Garth Rotary. Upcoming events: Teddy Bears' Picnic at the park - Sunday 8th September, 12-2pm. Just £2 per child, bring your teddy and some food and we can have a fab picnic together. There will be stalls and we have some great raffle prizes available. Next is the Scarecrow Trail - this Autumn Half Term. Theme this year is "Children's Book Characters", more details on Facebook.
