Patricia Margaret Millar Date ii Abstract Photographers made a major contribution to the recording of the Heroic Era of Antarctic exploration. By far the best known photographers were the professionals, Herbert Ponting and Frank Hurley, hired to photograph British and Australasian expeditions. But a great number of photographs were also taken on Belgian, German, Swedish, French, Norwegian and Japanese expeditions. These were taken by amateurs, sometimes designated official photographers, often scientists recording their research. Apart from a few Pole-reaching images from the Norwegian expedition, these lesser known expedition photographers and their work seldom feature in the scholarly literature on the Heroic Era, but they, too, have their importance. They played a vital role in the growing understanding and advancement of Antarctic science; they provided visual evidence of their nation’s determination to penetrate the polar unknown; and they played a formative role in public perceptions of Antarctic geopolitics. -

A survey of breeding birds during the brooding stage was carried out from February to April 2000 in the southern portion of Deception Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. This island supports two Sites of Special Scien- tific Interest (SSSI Nos. 21 and 27). Nine species were found breeding in the study area: Chinstrap Penguin Pygoscelis antarctica (an estimated 6820 breeding pairs at two colonies surveyed), Pintado or Cape Petrel Daption capense (36), Wilson’s Storm Petrel Oceanites oceanicus (3), Antarctic Cormorant Phalacrocorax atriceps bransfieldensis (9), Greater Sheathbill Chionis alba (2), Subantarctic Skua Catharacta antarctica (4), South Polar Skua C. maccormicki (11), Kelp Gull Larus dominicanus (49) and Antarctic Tern Sterna vittata (5). Due to the increasing tourist activity at Deception Island, better information on the location and size of breeding populations is a particular requirement if effective precautionary conservation actions are to be taken. Measure 6 (2017) Management Plan for Antarctic Specially Protected Area No 140 PARTS OF DECEPTION ISLAND, SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS Introduction The primary reason for the designation of Parts of Deception Island, (Lat. 62o57’S, Long. 60o38’W), South Shetland Islands, as an Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA) is to protect environmental values, predominantly the terrestrial flora within the Area. The flora of the island is unique in Antarctic terms, particularly where associated with these geothermal areas, but also because of the recently formed surfaces that provide known-age habitats for the study of colonisation and other dynamic ecological processes by terrestrial organisms (Smith 1988). Deception Island is an active volcano. Recent eruptions occurring in 1967, 1969 and 1970 (Baker et al. 1975) altered many of the topographical features of the island and created new, and locally transient, surfaces for the colonisation of plants and other terrestrial biota (Collins 1969; Cameron & Benoit 1970; Smith 1984a,b,c). There are a number of sites of geothermal activity, some with fumaroles (Smellie et al. 2002). Five small Sites around the coast of Port Foster were adopted under Recommendation XIII–8 (ATCM XIII, Brussels, 1985) as Site of Special Scientific Interest No 21 on the grounds that ‘Deception Island is exceptional because of its volcanic activity, having had major eruptions in 1967, 1969 and 1970. Parts of the island were completely destroyed, new areas were created, and others were covered by varying depths of ash. Few areas of the interior were unaffected. The island offers unique opportunities to study colonization processes in an Antarctic environment’. -

editor- Bisák Otto História lietania do roku 1914 Ľudia už pradávna pozorovali let vtákov na oblohe a ich techniku lietania. Medzi prvých, ktorí si vedeli zhotoviť krídla podobné vtákom patril i starogrécky Δαίδαλος , latinsky Daedalus (okolo roku 1650 až 1600 pred naším letopočtom). V gréckej mytológii je to najväčší grécky staviteľ, vynálezca, ale aj sochár a maliar. Bol synom aténskeho umelca Eupalama a vnuk kráľa Erechthea a pochádzal z Attiky. Mal dvoch synov Ikara a Lapyxa. Daidalos mal v Aténach veľkú sochársku a maliarsku dielňu a diela, ktoré v nej vytvoril boli takmer dokonalé. Daidalosová sestra poslala k nemu svojho syna Perdixa, aby sa naučil remeslu. Keď však Daidalos spozoroval, že jeho synovec má ešte väčšie nadanie ako on, zhodil ho z Aténskej Akropole. Pri pohrebe bol Daidalos obvinený a odsúdený na smrť. Bohovia mu pomohli utiecť z väzenia aj spolu so svojím synom sa dostal na Krétu a získal azyl u kráľa Minóa. Zhotovil kráľovnej Pasifaé pre styk s bielym býkom umelú kravu. Túto neveru spôsobil Poseidón, pre ktorého bol býk určený ako obeta, ale Mínos sa rozhodol, že býk je až príliš krásny, aby ho obetoval, a tak ho ušetril. Kráľovná Pasifaé, ktorá bola neverná s bielym býkom porodila obludu s ľudským telom a býčou hlavou. Na zákazku kráľa Minóa postavil pre Minotaura rozľahlý a zložitý labyrint. S touto stavbou je spojený príbeh Thésea a Ariadny, ktorej poradil Daidalos použiť klbko nite pre Thésea, aby sa dostal späť po zápase s Minotaurom. Kráľ Minós chcel Daidala udržať na Kréte, aby tajomstvo labyrintu zostalo zachované, ale Daidalos chcel opak. -

During that period, the American and British cavalries encountered advancing technologies that threatened to change war and directly alter cavalry’s armament, tactics, and overall role. With airplanes as with bicycles and other new technologies, cavalry officers were cautious. Rather than uncritically embracing or rejecting new technologies completely, cavalrymen tested them before coming to conclusions. Cavalrymen cautiously examined the capabilities of airplanes, developed applications and doctrine for joint operations, and in the United States, even tried to develop their own specially designed aircraft. Airplanes promised to relieve the cavalry of low-priority missions, not threaten its existence. Instead of replacing the cavalry in the 1910s-1930s, airplanes worked cooperatively with cavalry in reconnaissance, security, communication, protection, and pursuit, a cooperation tested in maneuvers and officially blessed in both British and American doctrine. Just as cavalrymen became dependent on the close working relationship with airplanes in the 1920s-30s, this relationship altered drastically as aviation priorities and doctrine shifted to independent strategic bombardment from tactical support of ground troops. -
