Moreover, anyone who knows that scientists once thought that the continents are fixed in place, or that the craters of the Moon are volcanic, or that the Earth cannot be more than 100 million years old, understands that a small minority has sometimes turned out to be right. But it is hard to think of a case in the modern era in which scientists have been virtually unanimous and wrong. Moreover, as I show, the consensus among publishing scientists is demonstrably not 97%. Instead, five surveys of the peer-reviewed literature from 1991 to 2015 combine to 54,195 articles with an average consensus of 99.94%. Keywords global warming, climate change, consensus, peer review, history of science Introduction Consensus Skuce et al. • Climate Change: Is the Science Really Settled?
CLIMATE CHANGE: IS THE SCIENCE REALLY SETTLED? by Lawrence Solomon SPPI COMMENTARY & ESSAY SERIES ♦ February 25, 2010 CLIMATE CHANGE: IS THE SCIENCE REALLY SETTLED? A PRESENTATION TO THE COLORADO MINING ASSOCIATION by Lawrence Solomon | February 10, 2010 Thank you, Stuart, for that introduction. I’m grateful for the opportunity to address this gathering, although I’m not that pleased anymore with the title of my talk. “Climate Change – Is the Science Really Settled?” That seemed like a good title back in October, when Stuart invited me to come here. But a lot has happened since October. Chiefly, Climategate happened, one month later, in November. For those of you who haven’t heard of Climategate, this was the release – probably by a whistleblower – of some 3000 documents, many of them emails between some of the most important promoters of the global warming hypothesis. I call the “doomsayers,” not to be pejorative but because that term, “doomsayer,” most accurately describes their message. Before those emails came to light, the doomsayers were already in trouble. Public opinion in the US, the UK and other countries had already swung against the thesis that man is responsible for dangerous global warming. After the Climategate emails came to light, elite opinion began to turn against the doomsayers. I can now tell you with great confidence that there won’t be a cap and trade bill, there won’t be a national carbon tax, there won’t be national legislation of any significance, not in the US, not in other countries that have not yet adopted greenhouse gas legislation.

  • Review of the Deniers
The Deniers – the world-renowned scientists who stood up against global warming hysteria, political persecution and fraud. by Lawrence Solomon, published by Richard Vigilante Books, 2008, ISBN 978-0-9800763-1-8 Does society benefit from a fear-driven science-funding policy that threatens the livelihood of scientists with the courage to argue against “orthodox” and established “beyond doubt” views on climate? The media drives this fear with increasingly hysterical messages that the earth is getting hotter, that this is being caused by human COB2B emissions and, that without radical social and economic surgery, we will face a myriad of global catastrophes, the like of which have not been seen since the dawn of our history. We are told that all serious scientists agree with this and that those few who dissent are either charlatans or are funded by the fossil fuel companies. Other dissenters are regarded on a par with creationists, Holocaust deniers or supporters of tobacco companies. But is this true? Is the science really settled? To answer this, Lawrence Solomon, the Canadian environmentalist and anti-nuclear campaigner, sought to find well-regarded scientists who disagreed with the AGW (anthropogenic global warming) hysteria promoted by Al Gore and the IPCC. The result was astonishing in that for all of the headline issues of the AGW hypothesis, he found dissenting scientists who were consistently the most accomplished and eminent people in their respective fields of expertise. In fact, the more he searched, the more there seemed to be, complete with data and analysis to support their positions. Chillingly, several of them, despite their substantial expertise and reputations, declined on-record interviews for fear of losing their funding and, in some cases, their jobs.

  • The Use and Misuse of Antisemitism Statistics in Canada
THE USE AND MISUSE OF ANTISEMITISM STATISTICS IN CANADA by Sheryl Nestel, PhD THE USE AND MISUSE OF ANTISEMTISM STATISTICS IN CANADA 1 The Use and Misuse of Antisemitism Statistics in Canada “Canadian Jews Most Targeted Group for Third Year in a Row” [1] proclaimed B’nai Brith Canada in a press release issued on July 22, 2019. Jews and others who are deeply troubled by the spread of antisemitism worldwide must have been alarmed to learn that Canada was being added to the growing list of countries where antisemitism is on the rise.[2] But how accurate are B’nai Brith’s claims? Upon close examination, it turns out that B’nai Brith’s interpretation of the state of antisemitism in Canada is misleading at best, perhaps deliberately so. The alarming headline actually obscures a complex web of established facts, dubious claims, overt and covert political agendas, avoidable inaccuracies, methodological opacity and unexplained exclusions - all of which demand examination. Since 1982, B’nai Brith Canada has published an Annual Audit of Antisemitic Incidents which the organization claims to be an “authoritative document on antisemitism in Canada.”[3] Indeed, the Audit is very widely cited. It has been employed for decades by Canada’s unfailingly pro-Israel governments as well as by an impressive range of media outlets including the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, The Globe and Mail, the Calgary Herald, Radio Canada, the U.S. State Department and THE USE AND MISUSE OF ANTISEMTISM STATISTICS IN CANADA 2 numerous other mainstream news sources Moreover, B’nai Brith’s claim that Jews are the and civil institutions.

  • Mediating Public Science: Experts, Politics, and Climate Change in the News Media in Canada
MEDIATING PUBLIC SCIENCE: EXPERTS, POLITICS, AND CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE NEWS MEDIA IN CANADA BERNHARD ISOPP A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO October 2018 © Bernhard Isopp, 2018 Abstract This project offers a reconstructionist science and technology studies (STS) analysis of climate change coverage in three Canadian newspapers, the Globe and Mail, the National Post, and the Toronto Star from 2006 to 2013. It employs a combination of framing, critical discourse, and philosophical analyses to address two core questions: (1) Why has climate change been represented in these newspapers in the ways it has? (2) What effects have these newspapers had in shaping issues of climate change? These broad inquiries are organised by a set of six more specific conceptual concerns stemming from STS: i) How do scientists relate, engage, and compete with other actors in influencing climate change coverage? ii) To what extent can these newspapers be understood as a site of scientific practice, communication, and knowledge production? iii) What broader social, political, and economic factors are linked to the competing representations of climate change and actor coalitions that emerge in these newspapers? iv) What broader images, ideologies, and philosophies of science and scientists shape and emerge from these media discourses? v) What do STS conceptions of scientific rhetoric suggest about these discourses? vi) How is the authority of science and scientists established, affected, challenged, and undermined through and by all these interacting influences and processes? While the answers to these questions are multifaceted, the authority of science is a culminating theme.

  • Mark Steyn and the Canadian Human Rights Commissions
‘Reasonable limits on the expression of hatred’: Mark Steyn and the Canadian Human Rights Commissions Matthew Omolesky I. On 20 October 2006, the website of the Canadian weekly current affairs magazine Maclean’s featured an article entitled ‘The future belongs to Islam,’ excerpted from the conservative polemicist Mark Steyn’s book America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It. [1] This provocative opinion piece presented a vision of European ‘demographic decline; the unsustainability of the social democratic state; and civilisational exhaustion,’ all of which paved the way for the continent’s ‘remorseless transformation into Eurabia.’ [2] Since ‘the salient feature of Europe, Canada, Japan and Russia is that they’re running out of babies,’ Steyn contended, ‘Europe has age and welfare,’ but ‘Islam has youth and will.’ [3] The article ended ominously, with a quotation from the Norwegian imam Mullah Krekar, who had recently told the Oslo newspaper Dagbladet: ‘We’re the ones who will change you [Europeans]. Just look at the development within Europe, where the number of Muslims is expanding like mosquitoes. Every Western woman in the EU is producing an average of 1.4 children. Every Muslim woman in the same countries is producing 3.5 children… Our way of thinking will prove more powerful than yours.’ [4] One question of Steyn’s, concerning this allegedly existential demographic and geopolitical threat, was meant to linger: ‘How does the state react?’ Ironically, it would be how the state reacted to Steyn – rather than immigration – that would take centre stage. One key non-state reaction to Steyn’s article was that of Mohamed Elmasry, president of the Canadian Islamic Congress (CIC), who eventually submitted complaints against Maclean’s and its editor, Kenneth Whyte, to the human rights commissions of British Columbia and Ontario, as well as the federal Canadian Human Rights Commission.

  • Speakers at the 2009 International Conference on Climate Change
12/10/2015 The Heartland Institute - Confirmed Speakers at the 2009 International Conference on Climate Change speakers last updated: March 5, 2009 The complete program for the 2009 International Conference on Climate Change, including cosponsor information and brief biographies of all speakers, can be downloaded in Adobe's PDF format here. More than 70 of the world’s elite scientists, economists and others specializing in climate issues will confront the subject of global warming at the second annual International Conference on Climate Change March 810, 2009 in New York City. They will call attention to new research that contradicts claims that Earth’s moderate warming during the twentieth century primarily was manmade and has reached crisis proportions. Headliners among the 70plus presenters will be: American astronaut Dr. Jack Schmitt—the last living man to walk on the moon. William Gray, Colorado State University, leading researcher into tropical weather patterns. Richard Lindzen, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the world’s leading experts in dynamic meteorology, especially planetary waves. Stephen McIntyre, primary author of Climate Audit, a blog devoted to the analysis and discussion of climate data. He is a devastating critic of the temperature record of the past 1,000 years, particularly the work of Michael E. Mann, creator of the infamous “hockey stick” graph. That graphthoroughly discredited in scientific circlessupposedly proved that mankind is responsible for a sharp increase in earth temperatures. Arthur Robinson, curator of a global warming petition signed by more than 32,000 American scientists, including more than 10,000 with doctorate degrees, rejecting the alarmist assertion that global warming has put the Earth in crisis and is caused primarily by mankind.
