Abstract By exploring changemaker principles as a component of social justice art education this research informed article exemplifies how moral consciousness and responsibility can be developed when training artist teachers. It embeds changemaker philosophy in the higher education art curriculum and demonstrates how this can create ruptures and ripples into educational pedagogy at the school level. A sociocultural qualitative methodology, that employs questionnaires, the visual and a focus group as methods, is used to reveal three lenses on student perceptions of the changemaker principle. The dissemination of these perceptions and sharing of active art experiences communicate how engagement with the concept of changemaker in art education can deepen the cognitive growth of learners, whilst facilitating an understanding of and involvement in interculturality. Shields, Advisor In his relatively short career, Drew Hayden Taylor has amassed a significant level of popular and critical success, becoming the most widely produced Native playwright in the world. Despite nearly twenty years of successful works for the theatre, little extended academic discussion has emerged to contextualize Taylor’s work and career. This dissertation addresses this gap by focusing on Drew Hayden Taylor as a writer whose theatrical work strives to bridge the distance between Natives and Non-Natives. Taylor does so in part by humorously demystifying the perceptions of Native people. Taylor’s approaches to humor and demystification reflect his own approaches to cultural identity and his expressions of that identity. Initially this dissertation will focus briefly upon historical elements which served to silence Native peoples while initiating and enforcing the gap of misunderstanding between Natives and non-Natives. Following this discussion, this dissertation examines significant moments which have shaped the re-emergence of the Native voice and encouraged the formation of the Contemporary Native Theatre in Canada. Finally, this dissertation will analyze Taylor’s methodology of humorous demystification of Native peoples and stories on the stage. -

MEDIA RELEASE: Craft Scotland and VAS showcase material mastery in wood by Scotland based makers Three of Scotland's most exciting artists present their work in the third Craft Scotland celebrates... exhibition as part of ALIGHT at Royal Scottish Academy In the third of a planned series celebrating craft mediums Craft Scotland is delighted once again to be partnering with Visual Arts Scotland (VAS) to celebrate contemporary woodworking through a presentation of multidisciplinary works from gifted Scotland based makers. This year Craft Scotland has chosen to explore wood through the diverse work of three makers: Charlotte Barker, Beth Legg and Naomi Mcintosh. Their work is presented alongside hirta, a modular structure that acts as a focus for discussion around materiality, design and making. Challenging the common perceptions of wood, this year the Craft Scotland celebrates... wood showcase highlights the versatility of wood as a craft material, and the diversity of applications it can be adapted to. Selected by the VAS committee and representatives of Craft Scotland, the three invited artists will form the starting point for a wider celebration of the diverse discipline of contemporary woodworking throughout the ALIGHT exhibition. A sense of movement is offered by Charlotte Barker, the wood’s natural texture contrasting with the controlled markings of her ceramic vessels. Beth Legg’s objects and jewellery are rooted in the poetic nature of metal, wood and stone and her fascination with hinterlands while Naomi Mcintosh’s designs explore volume, pattern and movement. Speaking ahead of the exhibition opening Craft Scotland Director Irene Kernan said: “Our media-specific showcases were born out of Craft Scotland and Visual Arts Scotland's mutual ambition to exhibit high-quality craft, alongside works of fine art, in a venue fitting of its stature. -

DOI: https://doi.org/10.16995/dscn.332 RESEARCH Drones and Surveillance Cultures in a Global World John Muthyala University of Southern Maine, US [email protected] Digital technologies are essential to establishing new forms of dominance through drones and surveillance systems; these forms have significant effects on individuality, privacy, democracy, and American foreign policy; and popular culture registers how the uses of drone technologies for aesthetic, educational, and governmental purposes raise questions about the exercise of individual, governmental, and social power. By extending computational methodologies in the digital humanities like macroanalysis and distant reading in the context of drones and surveillance, this article demonstrates how drone technologies alter established notions of war and peace, guilt and innocence, privacy and the common good; in doing so, the paper connects postcolonial studies to the digital humanities. -
