Using a previously published rbcL phylogeny of the Amaranthaceae–Chenopodiaceae alliance (Kadereit et al. 2003) and new ITS phylogenies of the Camphorosmeae and Salicornieae, we conclude that Australia has been reached in at least nine independent colonization events: four in the Chenopodioideae, two in the Salicornieae, and one each in the Camphorosmeae, Suaedeae, and Salsoleae. Where feasible, we used molecular clock estimates to date the ages of the respective lineages. The two oldest lineages both belong to the Chenopodioideae (Scleroblitum and Chenopodium sect. Orthosporum/Dysphania) and date to 42.2–26.0 and 16.1–9.9 Mya, respectively. Most lineages (Australian Camphorosmeae, the Halosarcia lineage in the Salicornieae, Sarcocornia, Chenopodium subg. Chenopodium/Rhagodia, and Atriplex) arrived in Australia during the late Miocene to Pliocene when aridification and increasing salinity changed the landscape of many parts of the continent. The Australian Camphorosmeae and Salicornieae diversified rapidly after their arrival. The molecular-clock results clearly reject the hypothesis of an autochthonous stock of Chenopodiaceae dating back to Gondwanan times. -

Heucke, Central Australian Camel Industry Association and R. Dance, Pastoral Division, Alice Springs BACKGROUND About 600,000 camels (Camelus dromedarius) are believed to inhabit the arid centre of Australia, mainly in South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Most of these camels are feral. A small camel industry has developed, which harvests selected animals for domestic and export markets, primarily for meat. Camels can eat more than 80% of the common plant species found in Central Australia. Some plant species are actively sought by camels and may need to be protected. METHOD Observations of grazing preferences by camels were made periodically for up to 12 years on five cattle stations in Central Australia. Where camels were accustomed to the presence of humans, it was possible to observe their grazing preferences from a few metres. Radio transmitters were fitted on some camels for easy detection and observation at any time. These evaluations were used to establish a diet preference or palatability index for observed food plants. Table 1. Callister Centre for Environmental Management, University of Ballarat, PO Box 663 Ballarat, Victoria 3353, AUSTRALIA Abstract: The vegetation of Peery Lake area, Paroo-Darling National Park (32°18’–32°40’S, 142°10’–142°25’E) in north western New South Wales was assessed using intensive quadrat sampling and mapped using extensive ground truthing and interpretation of aerial photograph and Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite images. 378 species of vascular plants were recorded from this survey from 66 families. Species recorded from previous studies but not noted in the present study have been added to give a total of 424 vascular plant species for the Park including 55 (13%) exotic species. Twenty vegetation communities were identified and mapped, the most widespread being Acacia aneura tall shrubland/tall open-shrubland, Eremophila/Dodonaea/Acacia open shrubland and Maireana pyramidata low open shrubland. One hundred and fifty years of pastoral use has impacted on many of these communities. In 1889 it was reported that Momba Peery Lake area of Paroo–Darling National Park (32°18’– was overrun by kangaroos (Heathcote 1965). EREMOPHILA STUDY GROUP NEWSLETTER NO. 8. OCTOBER 1977 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Geoff Needham Our aims and objectives were published in the first Newsletter. After five years of activity, now would be an appropriate time to review our achievements. 1. 'To draw attention to the attractiveness of many species of the genus the majority of which are unknown to horticulture.' This objective has been carried out most effectively, as eremophilas are now sold by many nurseries. Lectures have been given by our members to S.G.A.P. and to other societies. Ken Wames has presented lectures, together with many slides, in four States; articles have appeared in "Australian Plants", and much has been published in books on Australiana. Specimens have been provided for interstate flower shows as well as for general meetings. No criticism can be made of our achievements in this aspect. 2. 'To ascertain the conditions necessary for the successful cultivation of Eremophilo species.' With the build-up in the number of species in cultivation, plus an increase in membership, we have achieved the first step, of growing the plants, but we are sadly lacking in feedback information on their performance in various conditions. To be more specific, the amount of data sent in by members is almost non-existent. Obviously we need this data to ascertain the best conditions. It has been suggested that printed questionnaires could be sent out for members to fill in. This would also make the compiling of answers easier. 3. 'To select the most suitable species for garden culture.' Field trips by our members and other interested people, and those who succeeded in propagating the cuttings, have introduced many more species to culture. -

The Vegetation of the Western Australian Deserts

Hannover 2006 The Vegetation of the Western Australian Deserts - Erika and Sandro Pignatti, Rom - Abstract The internal area of W. Australia has arid climate and conditions for plant growth are particularly difficult. The surface of this huge, almost uninhabited territory consists of four landscape systems: the Great Sandy Desert, the Little Sandy Desert, the Great Victoria Desert, the Gibson Desert. The four deserts extend between 21-26° of south- ern latitude, linking to the central Australian deserts and the Nullarbor Plain in the South. Meteorological stations are only in settlements of the surrounding semi-desert areas (Wiluna, Meekatharra, Cue, Warburton), and all show around 200-250 mm year- ly rainfall; in the centre of the deserts rainfall is still much lower, and indicated as “erratic and unreliable”; some areas may lack rain for several years. Despite of the par- ticularly severe ecological conditions, most of the surface is covered by vegetation (at least a discontinuous one) and during expeditions in 2001 and 2002 over 700 species were collected and more than 350 phytosociological relevés were carried out.Two main habitat types can be recognized: Mulga – scattered growth of treelets (Acacia aneura, generally about 3-4 m height), with open understorey (Senna, Eremophila, Solanum) and herbs usually covering less than 20 % of the surface; in the Gibson Desert mulga occurs mainly on hard rock sub- strate (granite, laterite). Because of the discontinuous plant cover, fire can spread only over limited areas. Spinifex – Quite a compact cover of perennial grasses (several species of Triodia, with sharply pointed leaves in dense tussocks 3-5 dm high, panicles up to 1 m and high- er) in monospecific populations covering 60-80 % of the surface; in the sandy deserts, on siliceous sand. -
