  • Conifa Activity Report 2017 Conifa
CONIFA ACTIVITY REPORT 2017 CONIFA Annual activity report for fiscal year 2017 created by the CONIFA Executive Committee. Confederations of Independent Football Associations 8 0 2 4 7 3 - 7572 2017- 12- 18 ACTIVITY REPORT 2017 SUMMARY The fiscal year of 2017 has been the most active uneven year in the history of CONIFA so far. CONIFA grew on all continents, except for the Americas and Oceania, which means that we are more a truly global organization than ever before. Unfortunately, we could still not welcome a Latin American member in CONIFA, which remains the only blank spot on the CONIFA world map. Media-wise 2017 can only be described as a huge success for CONIFA. While the global media buzz about the World Football Cup 2016 could naturally not be repeated entirely, we did still reach millions of people in the world, with a strong focus on Europe, where most major news outlets covered the European Football Cup in Northern Cyprus. The Achilles heel of CONIFA remains its financial sustainability and stability, unfortunately. A growing team of passionate fundraisers inside and outside the Executive Committee were able to establish more valuable links and open many promising talks with potential donors and sponsors, but, even though first sponsorship deals could be signed off, we are still far off from a financial situation reflecting the weight and scale CONIFA has today fairly. The European Football Cup 2017, the highlight of the sporting year 2017 for CONIFA, in Northern Cyprus was a real huge milestone for our European Committee and our European members.

However, the game remained a purely abstract philosophical exercise until the early 1990s when a group of anarchists, architects and artists decided to play the game for the first time.

Stripes returned in 1975 after twelve years of solid amber shirts, but the most striking element of the new kit was the white shorts that created a throwback look, referencing Tigers kits used between World Wars. Shirt advertising was still a few years away, but sportswear firms were pushing boundaries in the 1970s: Europa of Leicestershire became the first supplier to put their logo on a City kit. First used in 1975/76, this shirt design is commonly associated with signed Billy Bremner signing from Leeds United. There were several versions, the first of which had Europa's logo without a wordmark, that was added for 1976/77. For 1978/79, City replaced the monogram with a tiger head crest, at the same time dropping white shorts in favour of the black set previously used with the away kit. Third tier teams rarely get national media coverage, but the 1992/93 home shirt, with it's all over tiger stripe print, ensured its everlasting notoriety. Wild designs were not unusual in the early 1990s, as kit suppliers showed off technological advances in printing, but they tended to be on away kits. Not so with City as Matchwinner took inspiration from the club's nickname.

The early season sprints of Reading and Sheffield United had taken them well clear of the chasing pack and built enough of a cushion to more or less guarantee a Premiership place. Nervy jitters had dogged the Blades from the middle of January and Leeds had been inexorably hauling them in until their own late collapse had seen them capture just nine points from the last ten games. That sentenced United to Man with a plan? Kevin Blackwell watches Leeds lose in the lottery of the Championship play offs and pitched them the final Championship game of the season at Deepdale against a dogged Preston North End outfit. The Deepdale team had secured 26 points from their own final ten matches and were the division’s form team. They had ended the season with the best defensive record in the Championship and when they defeated Leeds 2-0 in the closing contest at Deepdale on Sunday, April 30, they climbed above United into fourth spot, giving them home advantage in the decisive second leg.
