Japan does have one of the largest domestic and international tourism, gaining billions of Japanese yen only from tourism annually and it is still growing. This paper will go over the historical origins of domestic tourism in japan and point out traditions that are still performed by the Japanese people. Then we will go over the three major organized tourism campaigns, their objectives, outcomes, effects and their differences, with an analyze on the Japanese language. Furthermost, this paper will show the strong connection between domestic tourism and Japan as a nation. Final Report: "Developing the non-Muslim tourist destination for Muslim tourists: A case study of Akita Prefecture, Japan” (Nor Zafir Md Salleh) 1.0 Introduction Islamic Tourism is the type of tourism that adheres to the values of Islam (Al-Hamarneh and Steiner 2004). Although the definition of Islamic tourism looks rigid and confine to the values of Islam, the practice of Islamic tourism around the world is diversified and different from conservative Muslim countries to less conservative Muslim countries and non-Muslim countries. For example, in Saudi Arabia, Islamic tourism means doing tourism the Islamic way such as performing Hajj (Zamani-Farahani and Henderson 2009). In less conservative Muslim countries such as Malaysia, Islamic tourism is considered a tourism product by highlighting the values, history and culture as its unique selling proposition (Henderson 2003). Nonetheless, for non-Muslim countries, Islamic tourism activities are still at embryonic stage where the host countries are providing basic facilities such as Halal food, prayer room and qibla direction in hotel rooms to accommodate the needs of Muslim tourists (www.halalmediajapan.com). In short, there are three categories of Islamic Tourism such as Islamic Tourism for conservative, non-conservative and non-Muslim countries. Given the increasing trend of Muslim travelling worldwide, many of non-Muslim countries such as Japan embarks to provide a comfortable tourist experience for Muslim. The Muslim needs such as a proper place to pray and food have been provided to ensure the convenience of Muslim tourists. For example, at both Narita and Kansai International Airport, there are more prayer rooms being made available for Muslims and the popular Japanese food such as Udon and Ramen are certified Halal so that Muslim tourists could treasure Japanese food (www.halalmediajapan.com). -

The future of Japan’s tourism: Path for sustainable growth towards 2020 Preface Japan's tourism industry is on the verge of becoming a major economic engine for the country. In 2020, Japan will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games and enjoy a global platform for its people, culture, and landmarks. Recently, tourism has been positioned as an engine to solve social challenges in Japan and support economic growth. The March 2015 McKinsey Global Institute report, The Future of Japan: Reigniting Productivity and Growth, described how Japan has the potential to more than double its annual GDP growth, to 3 percent, by increasing productivity. This insight is also applicable to tourism, and this report investigates the challenges and potential impact of several initiatives aimed at addressing obstacles to realizing its inbound tourism goals. This report is the result of collaboration between McKinsey’s Japan office and the firm’s global Travel, Transport and Logistics Practice. The research team consisted of Shogo Akimoto, Shohei Ishigami, Minami Maeda, and Yusuke Shimada. We are grateful for the advice and input of many McKinsey colleagues, including Urs Binggeli, Alex Dichter, Masahiro Komatsubara, Diaan-Yi Lin, and Cheryl SH Lim, all of whom provided insight on travel and tourism. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Kwansei Gakuin University Repository 1 Kwansei Gakuin University Social Sciences Review Vol.19, 2014 Nishinomiya, Japan Roots of Cool Japan: From the Japanese Traditional Edo Culture to Anime and Manga Takuji OKUNO Japan’s transition from making things to making tales Japanese popular culture, known as “Cool Japan,” includes animations, comics, video games, figures, and J-pops that are highly acclaimed in Europe and the United States as well as throughout Asia. From the 1970s to the 1980s, Japan gained confidence in its ability to “make things” because consumers around the world embraced its manufactured products such as electric home appliances and automobiles with open arms in preference to the products of other advanced countries. However, at the beginning of the Heisei era, the bubble in the Japanese economy suddenly burst and Japan’s gross national product (GNP) plummeted, resulting in what is termed “the burst of economic bubble of 1990.” Relatively cheaper manufactured products from other Asian countries gained precedence over Japanese products. In response, many Japanese manufacturers moved their production plants to other Asian countries, particularly settling in mainland China, where labor costs were lower than in Japan. The recession was protracted and the Japanese people suffered from a sense low confidence in their abilities to overcome the recession. By the late 1990s, Prime Ministers Mori and, subsequently, Koizumi responded to Japanese political leader Heizo Takenaka’s advocacy of an information technology (IT) revolution in Japan as a way to beat the recession. -

Tourism in Japan Kwok Ho Ching Jockey Club Ti-I College Leung Hoi Chui Maryknoll Convent School (Secondary Section) Overview: During our nine-day trip to Japan, we have discovered and experienced different aspects of Japan first handed. In this report, we would like to investigate tourism in Japan; identify the characteristics of Japan’s tourism spots, look into the facilities and people that operate in coordination with tourism, and compare our investigation with tourism in Hong Kong. In addition, we would also study the culture and customs of Japan that is reflected by tourism. Our presentation can be roughly sorted into the following: Sightseeing in Japan 1. Educational tourist sites 2. Historic tourist sites 3. Scenic Spots Other things that operate in coordination with tourism: 1. English standard 2. transportation 3. International Calls 4. Hotel services/facilities 5. Road Sign 6. Shops 7. people Sightseeing in Japan We have visited a wide range of tourist spots in Japan. Based on their nature and functions, these tourist spots can be classified into several groups: Educational tourist sites The tourist spots that belong to this group can raise the awareness of tourists on certain issues (such as protection to the environment etc.). Tourist spots that belong to this group include Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution in Kobe (which gives tourists a clearer picture to the destruction caused by the Great Hanshin- Awaji Earthquake and restoration of life after the earthquake) and the Kobe City Resources Recycle Center (which brings tourists attention to the importance in protecting the environment by illustrating the ways to deal with wastes after they are thrown away). -

It will discuss what distinguishes Japanese animation from Western animation, how Japanese animation initially gained popularity among American audiences, and how it has subsequently impacted American popular culture. This paper will also focus on the subculture of otaku, a group of people known for their devoted following to Japanese animation and comic books. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relative popularity of Japanese animation and manga amongst American audiences as an example of globalization impacting the United States from another country. Keywords: anime, manga, soft power, Cool Japan, globalization 2 Introduction During the 1980s and 1990s, Japanese animation and comic books began coming overseas to the United States, where it soon gained popularity amongst a sizeable number of young Americans. Recognizing the economic potential of Japanese popular culture, in 2002, Douglas McGray, writing for Foreign Policy, wrote an article titled “Japan’s Gross National Cool”, highlighting Japan’s potential to be a global “soft power”, or a country that promotes itself through its cultural influence rather than by economic and military force. -

However, the unimaginable growth of international tourism has also brought about rapid changes in terms of economic growth as well as decline. 1 International Tourism BTTM-203 In this Unit, we attempt to give an overview of the issues involved in tourism at a global level and the economic impacts that have been generated or felt as a result of it.
