CHART OF THE MONTH November 2015 Rural Oxfordshire still ranked relatively poorly on geographical barriers to services According to the latest Indices of Deprivation, on the measure of geographical barriers to services (a sub domain of the overall index), 85 of the 407 lower super output areas* in Oxfordshire are ranked in the 10% most deprived areas in England. The geographical barriers to services sub domain includes road distance to GP surgery, post office, primary school and supermarket / convenience store. In those areas which are in rural Oxfordshire (on the ONS rural/urban classification), almost half (46%) of lower super output areas are ranked in the 10% most deprived on barriers to services. This means that, relative to other areas in England, the position in Oxfordshire appears to have worsened. The district showing the greatest difference is Vale of White Horse which has gone from 16 areas in the worst 10% in 2010 to 23 areas in that category in 2015. Further work is needed to understand the cause of this change in ranking. The Barriers to Housing and Services Domain measures the physical and financial accessibility of housing and local services. The indicators fall into two sub-domains: ‘geographical barriers’, which relate to the physical proximity of local services, and ‘wider barriers’ which includes issues relating to access to housing such as affordability. This publication reports on the geographical barriers sub domain only.
