  • Qatar Diplomatic Crisis - the Continuing Impact
Client Alert 13 July 2017 CONTACT US | FEEDBACK | FORWARD | WEBSITE UPDATE: Qatar Diplomatic Crisis - The continuing impact The political and economic boycott of Qatar, which began on 5 June 2017 when Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut diplomatic ties with Qatar and moved to close off access to the Gulf country, continue to have a significant impact on international trade in the Middle East. Since our previous alerts on 7 June 2017 and 12 June 2017 the following developments have occurred: 1. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt issued a 13-point list of demands to Qatar on 22 June, which included curbing diplomatic ties with Iran, severing all ties with "terrorist organisations", closing the Al Jazeera television network, terminating the joint military cooperation with Turkey, aligning itself with other Gulf and Arab countries' policies, and consenting to audits and annual compliance monitoring. The demands were delivered to Kuwait, which was acting as mediator of the crisis, and Qatar was given 10 days to comply. On 2 July, the boycotting countries agreed to extend the deadline by two days at the request of Kuwait. 2. On 3 July, Qatar responded to the demands but no specific details were publicly released. The Qatari foreign minister said that the demands were not aimed at tackling terrorism but at curtailing Qatar's sovereignty, and were impossible to meet. 3. On 5 July, the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt met in Cairo to consider Qatar's response and discuss the future of the crisis.

  • Country Report Sudan at a Glance: 2007-08
Country Report Sudan Sudan at a glance: 2007-08 OVERVIEW Although the Economist Intelligence Unit expects the 2005 north-south Comprehensive Peace Agreement to survive over the outlook period, serious concerns persist over questions of implementation. Arguments over issues such as the sharing of oil revenue, boundary delineations and the role of militias will result in rising tension. Both northern and southern leaders will be increasingly preoccupied with securing their core bases of support in preparation for national elections, due in 2009. In Darfur we expect ongoing inter-factional fighting, insecurity and population displacement, as pro- government forces confront those rebels who reject the May 2006 Darfur Peace Agreement. There is little prospect that the planned "hybrid" UN-African Union (AU) peacekeeping force, which the UN hopes will take over from the existing undermanned and under-funded AU mission in Darfur, will be allowed sufficient troops and operational independence to make a difference to the situation on the ground. Further oil output rises, combined with growing domestic demand, will keep real GDP growth strong over the outlook period. However, the current account will record large deficits, as increasing oil earnings are more than offset by growth in import spending. Key changes from last month Political outlook • Our political outlook is unchanged. Increasing international pressure is unlikely to result in a lasting solution to the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. Economic policy outlook • Our economic policy outlook is unchanged. Economic forecast • Following the publication of new trade figures by the Bank of Sudan (the central bank), we have made a small downward revision to our projections for Sudan!s current-account deficit, which we expect to average around 12% of GDP over the outlook period.

However, there are addi- tional codes beginning with ‘X’ that are requested by the European Commission for some statistics and the breakdown of countries may vary between datasets. For bank related data it is import- ant to have separate data for Guernsey, Jersey and Isle of Man, whereas researchers of the real economy have an interest in small territories like Ceuta and Melilla that are not always covered by ISO-3166. Countries that are treated differently in different statistics are described below. These are – United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland – France – Spain – Former Yugoslavia – Serbia United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

  • Qatar Destination Guide
Qatar Destination Guide Overview of Qatar The stark desert peninsula of Qatar extends into the Persian Gulf, bordered by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Its area may be small, but the independent emirate is exceedingly wealthy, with one of the highest per capita incomes in the world thanks to its oil and gas resources. Whether visiting Qatar for business or pleasure, most travellers make the stylish capital of Doha their base. Formerly a quaint and busy pearl-diving and fishing village, Doha is today one of the most prominent cities in the Middle East owing mainly to its importance as a major trading centre. It has a large British and American expatriate population (the Al Udeid air base was headquarters for the US invasion of Iraq in 2003), which has moulded the city into an interesting blend of eastern and western culture and architecture. Tourists tend to spend their time on the Doha Corniche, a palm-fringed public promenade that extends for four miles (7km) along the seafront and is lined with five and six-star resort hotels, restaurants, shops, beaches and recreational areas. Although there is some adventure to be found in the glittering sands beyond Doha, the biggest drawcard for visitors to Qatar is shopping, whether it is in the exotic traditional markets (souqs) or the plethora of massive ultramodern malls that fill the city centre. In addition to this impressive retail offering, Doha is fast becoming a sought after destination for foodies because of its sophisticated fine-dining scene. Those who want to explore outside the city can undertake excursions to interesting little towns, fishing villages, beautiful beaches, camel racing events, luxury resorts, and the Al Maha Sanctuary at Shahaniya, where the near-extinct Arabian Oryx is being protected.

The land aeria isw about the size of the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa combined and covers 226,658 square miles. The island is 976 miles long and 335 miles across at it’s widest point, and is shaped like an irregular oval. It has some smaller islands surrounding it, including Nosy Be, eight miles off of the coast in the Bay of Ampasindava in the northwest. Saint-Marie off the east coast and Nosy Be off the west coast are islands large enough to support inhabitants. There are also several tiny uninhabited islands in the Mozambique Channel: Nosy Mitsio, the Radama Islands, Chesterfield Island, and the Barren Islands. Geography This unique country is divided into three regions that run north and south along the length of the island. On the eastern side, along the Indian Ocean, there is a narrow piece of tropical lowlands, consisting mostly of flat plains. It is about 30 miles wide and includes marshes, but is very fertile. The eastern coast is unique in that for almost 1000 miles, it runs in a straight almost uninterrupted line from southwest to northeast. It has many white sand beaches with coral reefs, and the ocean is the roughest on this side of the island, facing out to the Indian Ocean.
