  • Proposal to Encode 'Shiva Linga' Symbols in Unicode
L2/15-093 2015-03-13 Proposal to Encode ‘Shiva Linga’ Symbols in Unicode Anshuman Pandey Department of Linguistics University of Californa, Berkeley Berkeley, California, U.S.A. [email protected] March 13, 2015 1 Introduction This is a proposal to encode two symbols associated with Hinduism in Unicode. The characters are pro- posed for inclusion in the block ‘Miscellaneous Symbols and Pictographs’ (U+1F300). Basic details of the characters are as follows (the code points are unassigned): glyph code point character name U+1F9xx SHIVA LINGA U+1F9xx SHIVA LINGA WITH SHAKTI YONI 2 Background In the proposal “Emoji Additions” (L2/14-174), authored by Mark Davis and Peter Edberg, five ‘religious symbols and structures’ among symbols of other categories were proposed for inclusion as part of the Emoji collection in Unicode. Shervin Afshar and Roozbeh Pournader proposed related symbols in “Emoji and Symbol Additions – Religious Symbols and Structures” (L2/14-235). These characters were approved for inclusion in the standard by the UTC in January 2015. They consist of the generic ; the - and for Judaism; and the and for Islam. These five characters complement other religious symbols already encoded in Unicode: several crosses and a for Christanity; the for Judaism; for Islam; the for Buddhism; for Sikhism; for Shinto; for Taoism, etc. Unicode also con- tains svastika symbols in the Tibetan block, which are auspicious signs used by Hindus, Buddhistsn and Jains. Davis and Edberg did not propose any symbols for Hinduism, but noted that the sacred syllable is encoded in various Indic script blocks. They also noted that there are no symbols for Jainism, Baha’i, and Zoroastrian symbols, but did not propose specific characters for encoding.

SOR0010.1177/0038026119845550The Sociological ReviewNarayan 845550research-article2019 The Sociological Article Review The Sociological Review 2019, Vol. 67(5) 945 –967 British Black Power: © The Author(s) 2019 Article reuse guidelines: The anti-imperialism of sagepub.com/journals-permissions DOI:https://doi.org/10.1177/0038026119845550 10.1177/0038026119845550 political blackness and the journals.sagepub.com/home/sor problem of nativist socialism John Narayan School of Social Sciences, Birmingham City University, UK Abstract The history of the US Black Power movement and its constituent groups such as the Black Panther Party has recently gone through a process of historical reappraisal, which challenges the characterization of Black Power as the violent, misogynist and negative counterpart to the Civil Rights movement. Indeed, scholars have furthered interest in the global aspects of the movement, highlighting how Black Power was adopted in contexts as diverse as India, Israel and Polynesia. This article highlights that Britain also possessed its own distinctive form of Black Power movement, which whilst inspired and informed by its US counterpart, was also rooted in anti-colonial politics, New Commonwealth immigration and the onset of decolonization. Existing sociological narratives usually locate the prominence and visibility of British Black Power and its activism, which lasted through the 1960s to the early 1970s, within the broad history of UK race relations and the movement from anti-racism to multiculturalism. However, this characterization neglects how such Black activism conjoined explanations of domestic racism with issues of imperialism and global inequality. Through recovering this history, the article seeks to bring to the fore a forgotten part of British history and also examines how the history of British Black Power offers valuable lessons about how the politics of anti-racism and anti-imperialism should be united in the 21st century.

A Note on Paradoxes and Some Applications Ram Prasad At times thoughts in prints, dialogues, conversations and the likes create illusion among people. There may be one reason or the other that causes fallacies. Whenever one attempts to clear the illusion to get the logical end and is unable to, one may slip into the domain of paradoxes. A paradox seemingly may appear absurd or self contradictory that may have in fact a high sense of thought. Here a wide meaning of it including its shades is taken. There is a group of similar sensing words each of which challenges the wit of an onlooker. A paradox sometimes surfaces as and when one is in deep immersion of thought. Unprinted or oral thoughts including paradoxes can rarely survive. Some paradoxes always stay folded to gaily mock on. In deep immersion of thought W S Gilbert remarks on it in the following poetic form - How quaint the ways of paradox At common sense she gaily mocks1 The first student to expect great things of Philosophy only to suffer disillusionment was Socrates (Sokratez) -'what hopes I had formed and how grievously was I disappointed'. In the beginning of the twentieth century mathematicians and logicians rigidly argued on topics which appear possessing intuitively valid but apparently contrary statements. At times when no logical end is seen around and the topic felt hot, more on lookers would enter into these entanglements with argumentative approach. May be, but some 'wise' souls would manage to escape. Zeno's wraths - the Dichotomy, the Achilles, the Arrow and the Stadium made thinkers very uncomfortable all along.

R E S U L T NEST-JUNIOR-I&II-2017 (RANKWISE) Dear participants, Congratulations! We thank you for your participation in this prestigious scholarships test held on 30th July, 2017 (Sunday). It was our 18th event since we started it on 11th March, 2006. Many of you have won scholarships and/or Certificates of Appreciation with All India Ranking (AIR) based on your performance in this test which was conducted at our test centres in 59 major cities across India. We thank you for your interest in this novel and genuine initiative for all Indian students pursuing education in science, engineering and medical courses. Here’s your result which has been arranged both in alphabetical order and rank-wise. Please read the following instructions carefully before searching your name in the list. The names of candidates who have won scholarships are given in golden colour. Names in green colour are for those who will get only Certificates of Appreciation. And yellow colour is used for those whose scores are below 40% (i.e. <80marks in NESTJR-II or <60marks in NEST-JR-I) who are not entitled to get any certificate. The list of ranks is arranged according to the total marks obtained in descending order. As per our standing policy, in case of two or more candidates having the same scores, we break the tie first by comparing marks in Section-I. If the marks of Section-I also happen to be the same, we compare the marks of Section-II, then Section-III, then Section-IV and finally Section-V in that order.
