Before Night Falls
Before Night Falls Dir: Julian Schnabel, 2000 A review by A. Mary Murphy, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada There are two remarkable things about Before Night Falls, based on Reinaldo Arenas's homonymous memoir, and one remarkable reason for them. First, director Julian Schnabel maintains a physically-draining tension throughout much of the film; and second, he grants a centrality to writing that Arenas himself demands. He is able to accomplish these things because his Arenas is Javier Bardem. The foreknowledge that this is a film about a man in Castro's Cuba, and a man in prison there for a time, prepares an audience for explicit tortures that never come. The expectation persists, as it must have for the imprisoned and persecuted man, so that the emotional tension experienced by the audience provides a tiny entry into the overpowering and relentless tension of daily life for Arenas and everyone else who is not a perfect fit for the Revolutionary mold. In the midst of this the writer finds refuge in his writing. Before Night Falls is the story of a writer who has been persecuted even for being a writer, never mind for what he wrote or how he lived, and who writes regardless of the risks and costs. In the childhood backgrounding segment of the film, Schnabel clearly establishes this foundation by showing a grandfather who is so opposed to having a poet in his house that he relocates the family in order to remove young Reinaldo from the influence of a teacher who dares to speak of the boy's gift. -

Don’t feel bad about that,’ ” says Witherspoon. “She makes me feel better about how I look and how I’m changing and makes me feel like aging is beautiful.” Styling by Carol McColgin On Witherspoon: Dries Van Noten top. On Stern: m.r.s. top. Beauty in the eye of the beholder? No, today, beauty is in the eye of the Internet. This, 2015, was the year that beauty went fully social, when A-listers valued their looks according to their “likes” and one Instagram post could connect with millions of followers. Case in point: the Ali MacGraw-esque look created for Kendall Jenner (THR beauty moment No. 9) by hairstylist Jen Atkin. Jenner, 20, landed an Estee Lauder con- tract based partly on her social-media popularity (40.9 million followers on Instagram, 13.3 million on Twitter) as brands slavishly chase the Snapchat generation. Other social-media slam- dunks? Lupita Nyong’o’s fluffy donut bun at the Cannes Film Festival by hairstylist Vernon Francois (No. 2) garnered its own hashtag (“They're calling it a #fronut,” the actress said on Instagram. “I like that”); THR cover star Taraji P. Henson’s diva dyna- mism on Fox’s Empire (No. 1) spawns thousands of YouTube tutorials on how to look like Cookie Lyon; and Cara Delevingne’s 22.2 million Instagram followers just might have something do with high-end brow products flying off the shelves. -
CITATION MLA Basics
CITATION MLA Basics 1. Create your Works Cited page before you start writing your essay. 1.1. Determine what type of source you are looking at. This is the hardest and most important part of citation! For example, there are significant differences between videos you watched on DVD, streaming online, or in theaters. 1.2. Use a style manual or style handbook to create the works cited entry. No one memorizes the rules, especially since they are updated every few years to keep up with new technology. Instead, learn how to use the style manual! 1.3. Organize your list alphabetically. If you have two authors with the same last name, look at their first names. If you have two sources by the same author, look at the title, and so on. 1.4. Format the list using hanging indents. This indent style requires that the first line of the citation is leftaligned, but any additional lines are indented by ½ inch. 2. Format your essay using MLA document style. 3. Create intext citations. 3.1. The first time you reference any source, either with a direct quote or a paraphrase, you should use a signal phrase to indicate the credibility of the source. For example, you might write: 3.2. After the first use of a source, you may choose between either signal phrases or parenthetical citation for your intext citations. 3.3. To determine what appears in the intext citation, use the first piece of information up to the first piece of punctuation from the Works Cited entry! In most cases, this will be the author’s last name. -

Denzel Washington: America's Favorite Movie Star
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Denzel Washington: America’s Favorite Movie Star After two years at #1, Tom Hanks drops to #2, according to a new Harris Poll ROCHESTER, N.Y. – January 16, 2007 – Hollywood movie star Denzel Washington returns to the list of America’s favorite movie stars in dramatic fashion, taking the number one position after dropping off the top ten list in 2005. Dropping from number one to number two is Tom Hanks, while movie legend John Wayne remains in third place. Tough guy Clint Eastwood jumps up two spots to fourth place. These are the results of a nationwide Harris Poll of 1,147 U.S. adults surveyed online by Harris Interactive ® between December 12 and 18, 2006. Will Smith also joins the list this year, perhaps due to the recent success of his film, The Pursuit of Happyness . Smith not only joins the top ten for the first time, but does so tied for fifth place. While all the other stars are the same, they have changed places within the top ten. Some of these changes include: • Harrison Ford is the biggest mover as he drops seven places from tied for #3 to #10. This excludes him from the top five for the first time since 1997; • Julia Roberts is tied for #5, a spot held alone in 2005. She is still alone in one regard – this Pretty Woman is the only female to appear in the top ten; • Johnny Depp drops five spots on the list. In 2005, he was #2 and this time out he is tied for #7. -
Denzel Washington Remains America's Favorite Movie Star
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Denzel Washington Remains America’s Favorite Movie Star Even Though He Hasn’t Made a Movie since 1976, John Wayne Remains on the List at Number Six ROCHESTER, N.Y. – January 15, 2008 – Whether it was his appearances in American Gangster or The Great Debaters, Denzel Washington scores the top position as America’s favorite movie star for the second year in a row on The Harris Poll’s annual favorite movie star list. In second place, also for the second year in a row, is Charlie Wilson’s War, or rather, Tom Hanks. Perhaps due to the success of the final Pirates of the Caribbean or his singing skills in Sweeney Todd, Johnny Depp moves from a seventh place tie to third place this year. Finishing out the top five are a Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts (#4), and one of the Men in Black, Will Smith (#5), who were each tied for fifth place on last year’s list. These are the results of a nationwide Harris Poll of 1,114 U.S. adults surveyed online by Harris Interactive® between December 4 and 12, 2007. Rounding out the top ten is one old standard and four movie stars who are new to the list this year, three returning after an absence and one on the list for the first time. In sixth place is John Wayne, who is the only movie star to appear on every Harris Poll top ten movie star list since it first began in 1994. And this is after having died in 1979! Tied for seventh on the list are Matt Damon, who’s Bourne Trilogy may have helped him make his first appearance on the list, and an old James Bond, Sean Connery. -

Richard Pells, "Film: Movies and Modern America"
Film: Movies and Modern America By Richard Pells What is a "typical" American movie? People throughout the world are sure they know. A characteristic American film, they insist, has flamboyant special effects and a sumptuous décor, each a reflection of America's nearly mythic affluence. Furthermore, American movies revel in fast- paced action and a celebration of individual ingenuity embodied in the heroics of an impeccably dressed, permanently youthful Hollywood star. And they feature love stories that lead, inevitably if often implausibly, to happy endings. Yet over the past 15 years, for every high- tech, stunt-filled Mission Impossible, there Director Martin Scorsese and actor Daniel Day-Lewis have worked together are serious and even disturbing films such on such high-quality film projects as American Beautyand The Hours. For as Gangs of New York and The Age of Innocence. every conventional Hollywood blockbuster (© Associated Press) apparently designed to appeal to the predilections of 12-year-old boys, there have been complex and sophisticated movies such as Traffic, Shakespeare in Love, Magnolia, and About Schmidt that are consciously made for grown-ups. What is therefore remarkable about contemporary American movies is their diversity, their effort to explore the social and psychological dimensions of life in modern America, and their ability to combine entertainment with artistry. Profile: Filmmaker Alexander Payne The sweeping vistas of the Nebraska countryside outside the city of Omaha in the movie About Schmidt, and the hushed, stoic visages within the city itself, represent a homecoming of sorts for filmmaker Alexander Payne. The son of Greek parents who owned a prominent restaurant in Omaha, Payne left Nebraska after high school to study Spanish and history at Stanford University, with an eye toward becoming a foreign correspondent. -
