Finding Neverland Coverpage Discussion guide developed by Heartland Truly Moving Pictures to accompany Finding Neverland, a Truly Moving Picture Award-winning lm. A Truly Moving Picture Award winner is a lm that unlocks the vast potential of the human spirit and enables us to view stories that display courage, integrity and hope, taking entertainment to a higher level. www.TrulyMovingPictures.org One Film Can Heartland Truly Moving Pictures, a non-prot organization, recognizes and honors lms and lmmakers whose work explores the human journey by expressing hope and respect for the positive values of life. We believe that one lm can move us to laughter, to tears, or to make a dierence. Finding Neverland is a movie that demonstrates that One Film Can. Synopsis Award winners Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet, Dustin Homan and Julie Christie star in this magical tale about one of the world’s greatest storytellers and the people who inspired his masterwork, Peter Pan! Well-known playwrite James M. Barrie (Depp) nds his career at a crossroads when his latest pay ops and doubters question his future. Then by chance he met a widow (Winslet) and her four adventurous boys. Together they form a friendship that ignites the imagination needed to produce Barrie’s greatest work! An enchanting big-screen treat with an acclaimed cast of stars, Finding Neverland has been hailed as one of the year’s best motion pictures. 1 To die will be an awfully big adventure. Peter Pan James Matthew (J.M.) Barrie’s life was impacted by death. The eects of these tragedies on Barrie seem to permeate his tale, Peter Pan, also known as The Boy Who Would Never Grow Up. Barrie, a Scottish author and playwright in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s was born into a large family with many siblings, two of whom died before his birth and another brother who died at age 13. This brother, David, was the next closest in age to Barrie and his death took a tremendous toll on both Barrie’s mother and Barrie himself. Later when Barrie met the Llewelyn-Davies boys by whom Peter Pan was inspired; he saw them become orphans and unocially adopted them. In those years Barrie lived as their caretaker he saw two of the ve boys die; one by war and the other a suspected suicide. Later, after Barrie’s death, Peter, after whom Peter Pan the character is supposedly named, killed himself. All of these events, with the exception of Peter’s suicide long after Barrie’s death, likely impacted Barrie and his writing heavily. Discussion Questions • Although Finding Neverland takes liberties with history and J.M. Barrie’s life, for the most part it is a fair depiction of the events and people that inspired his play, Peter Pan. After watching the movie do you have a dierent appreciation of the story Peter Pan? Why? • As portrayed in the movie, how does Barrie deal with death? • How does the death of their father affect the Llewelyn-Davies boys? How is it different for each child and how do they overcome the grief? • Peter Pan was based on Peter Llewelyn-Davies, but do you believe that Barrie saw himself as Peter Pan, as Peter Llwelyn-Davies states at the end of the movie? Why? 2 Time is chasing after all of us, isn’t that right? Mrs. Snow to J.M. Barrie in Finding Neverland When theatre patron Mrs. Snow encounters Barrie in Finding Neverland after the debut of Peter Pan she expresses how taken she is with the play and how her late husband would have loved the pirates and the adventure saying, “He was really just a boy himself, you know.” Peter Pan evokes multiple thoughts and emotions. It is a story full of themes ripe for exploration. Use your knowledge of the story of Peter Pan to discuss the following questions. Discussion Questions • Time and its finiteness are themes in Finding Neverland. How does time play a central role in both this story and in the play Peter Pan? • Although Captain Hook and the crocodile are not central to the story in Finding Neverland, if you are familiar with the story of Peter Pan think about and discuss the symbolism these characters have. • As Sylvia Llewelyn-Davies time begins to run out she has a conversation with Barrie about Neverland and asks him what it is. What do you think of his explanation of Neverland? Does this conversation make you think about the Neverland represented in Peter Pan any dierently? • In what ways did Barrie struggle with the finiteness and boundaries of time and how did these struggles manifest in his writing? • Besides time, what other symbolism or themes can you find in Peter Pan, and how do you feel those symbols and themes were inuenced by Barrie’s life? 3 Do you believe in fairies? Say quick that you believe. If you believe, clap your hands! Peter Pan Barrie demonstrates a boundless imagination in the movie and creates imaginative worlds that are very healing places for the Llewelyn-Davies boys as well as for others, young and old. Think about the power of imagination demonstrated in the movie as you discuss the following questions. Discussion Questions • How do the limitations of the real world boundaries Barrie and the Llewelyn-Davies family experience counteract the limitless imagination Barrie embraces in the film? Give some examples. • What about the Llewelyn-Davies boys inspired Barrie? Likewise, how did Barrie inspire the Llewelyn-Davies boys and impact their outlook on life? • Have you ever been inspired by an individual in a similar way? How? • What did you think about the fantasies interspersed throughout the film? Did your imagination ever work this way as a child? If so, at what point did your powerful imagination become inactive? Was there a particular event that caused it to end? • In the beginning of the film when Barrie meets Peter he is struck by Peter’s reluctance to indulge in imagination. How do you believe this initial encounter helped shape their relationship? • Finding Neverland highlighted the power of imagination. What are some ways you can inspire imagination in your family or with youth with which you might work. 4 Truly Moving Moments Finding Neverland has been honored as a Heartland Truly Moving Picture Award-winning lm. • Before Night Falls
Before Night Falls Dir: Julian Schnabel, 2000 A review by A. Mary Murphy, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada There are two remarkable things about Before Night Falls, based on Reinaldo Arenas's homonymous memoir, and one remarkable reason for them. First, director Julian Schnabel maintains a physically-draining tension throughout much of the film; and second, he grants a centrality to writing that Arenas himself demands. He is able to accomplish these things because his Arenas is Javier Bardem. The foreknowledge that this is a film about a man in Castro's Cuba, and a man in prison there for a time, prepares an audience for explicit tortures that never come. The expectation persists, as it must have for the imprisoned and persecuted man, so that the emotional tension experienced by the audience provides a tiny entry into the overpowering and relentless tension of daily life for Arenas and everyone else who is not a perfect fit for the Revolutionary mold. In the midst of this the writer finds refuge in his writing. Before Night Falls is the story of a writer who has been persecuted even for being a writer, never mind for what he wrote or how he lived, and who writes regardless of the risks and costs. In the childhood backgrounding segment of the film, Schnabel clearly establishes this foundation by showing a grandfather who is so opposed to having a poet in his house that he relocates the family in order to remove young Reinaldo from the influence of a teacher who dares to speak of the boy's gift.

THE REST OF THE STORY Barrie and the Llewelyn-Davies boys visited Scourie Lodge, Sutherland—in northwestern Scotland—during August of 1911. In this group image we see Barrie with four of the boys together with their hostess. In the back row: George Llewelyn Davies (age 18), the Duchess of Sutherland and Peter Llewelyn Davies (age 14). In the front row: Nico Llewelyn Davies (age 7), J. M. Barrie (age 51) and Michael Llewelyn Davies (age 11). Online via Andrew Birkin and his J.M. Barrie website. After their mother's death, the five Llewelyn-Davies boys were alone. Who would take them in? Be a parent to them? Provide for their financial needs? Neither side of the family was really able to help. In 1976, Nico recalled the relief with which his uncles and aunts greeted Barrie's offer of assistance: ...none of them [the children's uncles and aunts] could really do anything approaching the amount that this little Scots wizard could do round the corner. He'd got more money than any of us and he's an awfully nice little man. He's a kind man. They all liked him a good deal. And he quite clearly had adored both my father and mother and was very fond of us boys.

  • CITATION MLA Basics
CITATION MLA Basics 1. Create your Works Cited page before you start writing your essay. 1.1. Determine what type of source you are looking at. This is the hardest and most important part of citation! For example, there are significant differences between videos you watched on DVD, streaming online, or in theaters. 1.2. Use a style manual or style handbook to create the works cited entry. No one memorizes the rules, especially since they are updated every few years to keep up with new technology. Instead, learn how to use the style manual! 1.3. Organize your list alphabetically. If you have two authors with the same last name, look at their first names. If you have two sources by the same author, look at the title, and so on. 1.4. Format the list using hanging indents. This indent style requires that the first line of the citation is leftaligned, but any additional lines are indented by ½ inch. 2. Format your essay using MLA document style. 3. Create intext citations. 3.1. The first time you reference any source, either with a direct quote or a paraphrase, you should use a signal phrase to indicate the credibility of the source. For example, you might write: 3.2. After the first use of a source, you may choose between either signal phrases or parenthetical citation for your intext citations. 3.3. To determine what appears in the intext citation, use the first piece of information up to the first piece of punctuation from the Works Cited entry! In most cases, this will be the author’s last name.
