ABSTRACT Stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans in the U.S. Media: Appearance, Disappearance, and Assimilation Yueqin Yang, M.A. Mentor: Douglas R. Ferdon, Jr., Ph.D. This thesis commits to highlighting major stereotypes concerning Asians and Asian Americans found in the U.S. media, the “Yellow Peril,” the perpetual foreigner, the model minority, and problematic representations of gender and sexuality. In the U.S. media, Asians and Asian Americans are greatly underrepresented. Acting roles that are granted to them in television series, films, and shows usually consist of stereotyped characters. It is unacceptable to socialize such stereotypes, for the media play a significant role of education and social networking which help people understand themselves and their relation with others. Within the limited pages of the thesis, I devote to exploring such labels as the “Yellow Peril,” perpetual foreigner, the model minority, the emasculated Asian male and the hyper-sexualized Asian female in the U.S. media. Caniff’s work shifts from support for Chinese Communist resistance against the Japa- nese invasion in the pre-World War II Sino-Japanese War, to the crusade of a character like Steve Canyon against Communism during the Cold War, largely following U.S. American ideology in each of these historical moments. This ideological evolution is the central object of this study. Key words: Americanism, Milton Caniff,Terry and the Pirates, Steve Canyon, Sino-Japanese War, Cold War. RESUMEN Este artículo muestra la presencia de lo que muchos autores han denominado americanismo en la obra de Milton Caniff, la cual permite trazar la evolución de dicha corriente ideológica a lo largo del siglo XX. En este sentido, la obra de Caniff pasa de apoyar la resistencia comunista china en contra de la invasión japonesa durante la guerra chino/japonesa antes de la segunda guerra mundial, a retratar la cruzada de un personaje como Steve Canyon contra el comunismo en tiempos de la guerra fría, siguiendo decididamente la ideología estadunidense en cada uno de estos momentos. Tal evolución ideológica es el objeto central del presente estudio. -

Film: Movies and Modern America By Richard Pells What is a "typical" American movie? People throughout the world are sure they know. A characteristic American film, they insist, has flamboyant special effects and a sumptuous décor, each a reflection of America's nearly mythic affluence. Furthermore, American movies revel in fast- paced action and a celebration of individual ingenuity embodied in the heroics of an impeccably dressed, permanently youthful Hollywood star. And they feature love stories that lead, inevitably if often implausibly, to happy endings. Yet over the past 15 years, for every high- tech, stunt-filled Mission Impossible, there Director Martin Scorsese and actor Daniel Day-Lewis have worked together are serious and even disturbing films such on such high-quality film projects as American Beautyand The Hours. The son of Greek parents who owned a prominent restaurant in Omaha, Payne left Nebraska after high school to study Spanish and history at Stanford University, with an eye toward becoming a foreign correspondent. -

Yardeni Research, Inc. A Serious Man (+) is the latest offbeat flick from Joel and Ethan Coen. It's very funny. The protagonist is a professor of mathematics, a serious subject that focuses on the meaning of numbers and seeks proofs to explain their relationships. The movie is about the meaning of life and our relationships with one another and with God. The Coens seem to conclude that the only certainty is the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle: If you know where an electron is, you don’t know how fast it is going. If you know how fast it is going, you don’t know where it is. In Hollywood, they don’t believe in universal truths. Everything is relative. Amelia (+) is a movie that ends badly for obvious reasons. Amelia Earhart ran out of fuel and luck over the Pacific on July 2, 1937. She was a risk taker. She followed the lead of her promoter husband in leveraging her fame as a female flyer by endorsing all sorts of branded merchandise. She defended her crass materialism by saying she needed the money to finance her adventures in the air. Wall Street’s high flyers also take lots of risks to finance their over-the-top lifestyles. However, when they run out of luck, the government is there to refuel them. An Education (+ +) is a tough movie to watch if you have a teenage daughter. Don’t let her go off to Paris with an older guy, even if he claims that his auntie will chaperone. However, the young leading lady is played to perfection by Carey Mulligan.
