Mediate Aftermath of a Date Rape
PRESS KIT LOG LINE A young professional struggles to process what’s happened to her in the immediate aftermath of a date rape. Her trauma is compounded when she reports the assault and discovers that the cops and even her own family don’t believe her. Based on true survivor stories. SYNOPSIS Believe Her is a 13 minute narrative short film that explores why we are inclined not to believe victims of sexual assault. The story, built from true experiences from sexual assault survivors, follows MONICA (Allison Tolman) from the time she is assaulted through her decision not to file a report. As she's interviewed by the police, we see, though a series of flashbacks, that Monica was violently raped at the end of what she thought was a good first date. But as she's questioned, seeds of doubt are sewn: she was wearing something sexy, she'd had a lot to drink, she has a reputation for sleeping around. And as she processes the assault, details are fuzzy. While good intentioned, the cops, her brother, even her best friend call her story into question, forcing her to decide not to prosecute, and instead, internalize her trauma and suffer in secrecy. Believe Her was shot in Brooklyn with an all female crew in October 2017, coincidentally, just two weeks after the Weinstein story broke and launched the #MeToo movement. Filmmaking Team ERIN DOYLE COOPER Director/Writer/EP Erin Doyle Cooper is a writer, director, and creative director, who focuses on telling character-driven stories that foster diversity of thought. -
PROJECT TITLE: Civil Rights Exhibition
Application PDF Maryland Historical Society Civil Rights Exhibition Request: $50,000.00 Baltimore National Total Match: $50,000.00 Baltimore City PROJECT TITLE: Civil Rights Exhibition PROJECT SUMMARY: The Maryland Historical Society (MdHS) seeks support for the design and fabrication of its major FY21 exhibition focused on African American Civil Rights. The following collections and smaller initiatives that MdHS has presented since 2013 will culminate in this exhibit to tell the larger story about the African American Civil Rights Movement that extends from the Reconstruction Era to the present day: (i) MdHS stewards 6,000 photographs by Paul Henderson, a prominent Afro-American Newspaper photographer. Henderson documented many integral Civil Rights moments from the 1940s to 60s that captured important events, groups, and people, such as the protest at segregated Ford's Theatre in Baltimore, NAACP membership campaign meetings at Sharp Street Church, the Baltimore Elite Giants Negro League baseball team, Morgan State College, Dr. Lillie May Carroll Jackson (head of the NAACP, 1935-1970) and family, Thurgood Marshall with Dr. Carl Murphy (editor-publisher of the Afro-American newspaper), Henderson's photography equipment, and ephemera from his manuscript collection. (ii) Preserve the Baltimore Uprising 2015 Archive Project (PBU) is a digital repository that preserves digital media, including photographs, videos, oral histories, and city documents, created by participants and witnesses to the protests and unrest that followed the death of Freddie Gray on April 19, 2015. MdHS produced a free online resource presenting this media and ensuring that the historical record includes diverse perspectives from people whose lives have been directly impacted by these complex events. -

The Shafi Controversy: Context and Preliminary Takeaways
THE SHAFI CONTROVERSY: CONTEXT AND PRELIMINARY TAKEAWAYS David R. Brockman, Ph.D. “The Shafi Controversy: Context and Preliminary Takeaways” https://doi.org/10.25613/jryw-jq08 The Shafi Controversy Introduction In late 2018 and early 2019, a faction within the Tarrant County Republican Party (TCGOP) attempted to force the removal of the organization’s newly appointed vice chair, Dr. Shahid Shafi, because he is Muslim. The controversy drew national and international media attention,1 and pitted anti-Muslim activists against party luminaries such as U.S. Senator Ted Cruz and Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who voiced support for Shafi. Though anti-Muslim rhetoric has become common in the GOP, party leaders now condemned religious bigotry and discrimination as contrary to Republican principles. While the effort to oust Shafi ultimately failed, the episode offers a case study in the ways religion and politics intersect in a Texas that is steadily growing more ethnically and religiously diverse. Shafi’s appointment to party leadership is itself an indicator of the growth of the Muslim community, both demographically and in political influence, in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area as well as statewide and nationally. -

Fargo: Seeing the Significance of Style in Television Poetics?
Fargo: Seeing the significance of style in television poetics? By Max Sexton and Dominic Lees 6 Keywords: Poetics; Mini-series; Style; Storyworld; Coen brothers; Noah Hawley Abstract This article argues that Fargo as an example of contemporary US television serial drama renews the debate about the links between Televisuality and narrative. In this way, it seeks to demonstrate how visual and audio strategies de-stabilise subjectivities in the show. By indicating the viewing strategies required by Fargo, it is possible to offer a detailed reading of high-end drama as a means of understanding how every fragment of visual detail can be organised into a ‘grand’ aesthetic. Using examples, the article demonstrates how the construction of meaning relies on the formally playful use of tone and texture, which form the locus of engagement, as well as aesthetic value within Fargo. At the same time, Televisuality can be more easily explained and understood as a strategy by writers, directors and producers to construct discourses around increased thematic uncertainty that invites audience interpretation at key moments. In Fargo, such moments will be shown to be a manifestation not only of the industrial strategy of any particular network ‒ its branding ‒ but how is it part of a programme’s formal design. In this way, it is hoped that a system of television poetics ‒ including elements of camera and performance ‒ generates new insight into the construction of individual texts. By addressing television style as significant, it avoids the need to refer to pre-existing but delimiting categories of high-end television drama as examples of small screen art cinema, the megamovie and so on. -
