Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God Thursday, December 31 - 6:00 pm Friday, January 1 - 10:00 am

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. In- spired with this confidence, we fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins and Mother; to thee do we come; before thee do we stand, sinful and sorrowful; O Mother of the Word In- carnate, despise not our petitions but in thy mercy hear us. Amen. Memorare of St. Bernard

Christmas

The Solemnity of the Nativity of Our Lord—to give Christmas its full august title—is the Church’s great festival of light. Exactly nine months after the (March 25) and near the winter sol- stice, this joyful celebration proclaims at the darkest time of the year the definitive revelation of God’s luminous love in the Incarnation of His Divine Son. The oldest known collect for the first Mass of Christmas thus opens, “O God, who hast made this most holy night to shine with the illumination of the true light.”

The festival was first instituted in Rome—certainly by the year 336 AD—and spread thence gradually throughout the Church and to the East where the manifestation of the Incarnate Logos was already ob- served on the Feast of the Epiphany. In fact, Christmas and Epiphany together combine and harmo- nize the Western and the Eastern approaches to the mystery of the Incarnation, and the festive season between the two days rounds out the winter cycle of the Church’s year, matching the spring cycle that runs from Easter to .

The high feast of Christmas is also distinguished by its unique threefold celebration of the Eucharistic Sacrifice. The custom of observing the Nativity of Christ with three Masses celebrated successively— at midnight, at dawn, and in die (during the day)--also began in Rome. St. Thomas Aquinas defended this ancient liturgical practice of saying so many Masses for one feast by affirming the “triple birth” of Christ Who is always born anew in eternity, in time, and in the of the faithful. The modern Ro- man Rite preserves the threefold celebration in offering a Vigil Mass on Christmas Eve followed by Midnight Mass and then Mass on Christmas morning.

In the Catholic order of Masses at Christmas we have the chance to hear the glorious Proclamation of the Birth of Christ. This stately announcement of Jesus’ birthday is an ancient feature of the Roman Martyrology traditionally recited in the Divine Office, though the Church also encourages its chanting at the beginning of the Christmas Masses in place of the usual penitential rite. This Proclamation of the Birth of Christ “in the fullness of time” sets the Incarnation in the context of the great events of sacred and secular history, thus uniting our celebration today with that singular moment on which all history turns.

At Christmas also we sing again, for the first time in nearly four weeks, the great doxology Gloria in excelsis Deo. Fittingly omitted in Advent, this Hymnus Angelicus (as the Gloria is also known) be- gins with the words sung by the angels at Christ’s birth (Luke 2:14). Added to the Mass at Rome by Pope Symmachus in the fifth century, the Gloria was at first sung only at Christmas, but then by papal precedent it was extended to become a part of Masses on nearly all Sundays and major feasts. With its exquisite poetry, the Gloria transmits the spirit of Christmas to almost every Eucharist, connecting thus with golden chords of music the ancient Messianic song of the Jews, the caroling of the angels at Bethlehem, and the ongoing hymn of the People of God at every Mass throughout the world. Chrismon Tree

What are chrismons? What is a chrismon tree? The name “chrismon” comes from the Latin “Christi monogramma” meaning “monogram of Christ.” Chrismons are tree ornaments with symbols depicting the life and saving acts of Jesus Christ. The evergreen tree on which they are hung symbolizes eternal life, while the ornaments themselves remind us of the true meaning of Christmas.

Beginning December 23rd, please be sure to pause by the tree in the narthex to admire the beauty of the chrismons. May you and your family have a blessed Christmas!
