DUBAI, June 12, (Agencies): Saudi Arabia announced Saturday this year’s Hajj pilgrimage will be limited to no more than 60,000 people, all of them from within the kingdom, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The announcement by the king- dom comes after it ran an incredibly pared-down pilgrimage last year over the virus, but still allowed a small number of the faithful to take part in the annual ceremony. A statement on the state-run Saudi Press Agency quoted the kingdom’s Hajj and Umrah Ministry making the announcement. It said this year’s Hajj, which will begin in mid-July, will be limited to those ages 18 to 65. Those taking part must be vacci- nated as well, the ministry said. “The kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which is honored to host pilgrims every year, confirms that this ar- rangement comes out of its constant concern for the health, safety and security of pilgrims as well as the safety of their countries,” the state- ment said. Two- thirds were foreign residents from among the 160 different nationalities that would have normally been rep- resented at the Hajj. One-third were Saudi security personnel and medical staff. ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ Biden urges G-7 leaders to ‘compete’ with China CARBIS BAY, England, June 12, (AP): Leaders of the world’s largest economies unveiled an infrastructure plan Saturday for the developing world to compete with China’s global initiatives, but there was no immediate consensus on how forcefully to call out Beijing over human rights abuses. Citing China for its forced labor practices is part of Presi- dent Joe Biden’s campaign to persuade fellow democratic leaders to present a more unifi ed front to compete economi- cally with Beijing. But while they agreed to work toward competing against China, there was less unity on how ad- versarial a public position the group should take. Canada, the United Kingdom and France largely en- dorsed Biden’s position, while Germany, Italy and the Eu- ropean Union showed more hesitancy during Saturday’s fi rst session of the Group of Seven summit, according to a senior Biden administration offi cial. The offi cial who briefed reporters was not authorized to publicly dis- cuss the private meeting and spoke on condition of anonymity. SEATTLE, June 12, (AP): A Washington state man who admitted using inside information from his wife about Am- azon to trade the company’s stock has been sentenced to 26 months in prison. Viky Bohra, 37, received the sentence Thursday for ille- gally trading Amazon stock after pleading guilty last year to securities fraud, said Acting U.S. Attorney Tessa Gorman. Bohra admitted he made profi ts of $1.4 million between 2016 and 2018 with information provided by his wife, Gor- man said. She had access to confi dential information about Ama- zon revenue and expenses and because of her work, the couple was subject to blackout periods when no stock could be traded, prosecutors said. Despite that restriction, Bohra conducted trades during blackout periods, the pros- ecutors said. Bohra’s wife, Laksha Bohra, will not face charges as a result of her husband’s plea agreement with federal pros- ecutors. Boyra and his family have paid $2.6 million in penal- ties and interest in the case. Because of those payments, the federal government won’t seek forfeiture, Gorman said. Laksha Bohra started her work with the company as a transfer pricing manager in Amazon’s tax department in December 2012 and was promoted to senior manager in May 2018, according to court records. She had access to Amazon’s fi nancial reporting databases and shared network fi les, was suspended from her job in Oc- tober 2018 and resigned soon after that, court records said. Ian Allen-Anderson, a spokesman for Amazon, declined to comment on the case Friday. Gorman characterized the insider trading as unbridled greed. “This defendant and his wife were earning hundreds of thousands of dollars in salary and bonuses from their jobs in tech - but he was not content with that - greedily schem- ing to illegally profi t by trading Amazon stock,” Gorman said in statement. She added: “This case should stand as a warning to those who try to game the markets with insider trading: there is a heavy price to pay with a felony conviction and prison sentence.” ARAB TIMES, SUNDAY, JUNE 13, 2021 BUSINESS 9

(AP) American plans orders for electric-powered aircraft FORT WORTH, Texas, June 12, (AP): American Airlines said Thursday it plans to invest $25 million in U.K.-based Vertical Aerospace Group and consider a $1 billion order for small, electric-powered aircraft that can take off and land like helicopters. The American announcement came as Vertical Aerospace disclosed that it has agreed to merge with special-purpose acquisition company Broadstone Acquisition and become a publicly traded company later this year. American, Microsoft’s M12, Honeywell, Rolls-Royce and others will take stakes in Vertical through private in- vestment in public equity, or PIPE transactions. Another in- vestor, Irish aircraft leasing company Avolon, said Thursday that it placed a $2 billion conditional order for up to 500 Vertical aircraft. Vertical is working to develop a four-passenger electric air- craft that could carry people from city centers to airports. The company said it plans to conduct its fi rst test fl ight later this year and hopes to gain regulatory approvals as early as 2024. American said it expects to make a “pre-order” up to 250 aircraft - suggesting a price tag of $4 million per aircraft - with an option for 100 more. The order hinges on Vertical meeting certain terms, which the companies did not detail. The deal is the latest move by a major airline to demon- strate interest in developing technology around electric air- craft and alternative fuels. United announced a similar deal with another electric vertical-takeoff hopeful, Archer Avia- tion, in February. Critics view the announcements as green- washing by airlines whose planes are a growing source of climate-changing emissions. ARAB TIMES, SUNDAY, JUNE 13, 2021 SCIENCE 11

No more kidney dialysis? Severe shortages hit Lebanese hospitals BEIRUT, June 12, (AP): Hospitals in Lebanon warned Thurs- day they may be forced to suspend kidney dialysis next week due to severe shortages in supplies, the latest in Lebanon’s ac- celerating crises and collapsing health sector. Lebanon is grappling with an unprecedented economic and fi nancial crisis that has seen the local currency collapse and banks clamp down on withdrawals and money transfers. As the Central Bank’s foreign currency reserves dry up, the coun- try has been witnessing shortages in medicines, fuel and other basic goods, with long lines forming outside petrol stations. The once-thriving health care system has been among the hardest hit, with some hospitals halting elective surgeries, lab- oratories running out of test kits and doctors warning in recent days that they may even run out of anesthesia for operations.
